2020 Mazda CX-5 Reviews Summary

According to a Harvard Business Review marketing study, there is such a thing as too much choice. And when the marketplace presents consumers with too much choice, there is a chance they won’t buy anything at all.

For the 2020 model year, there are more than 40 small or compact SUVs available, half of them sold by luxury brands. Small and scrappy Mazda offers three of them: the CX-3, the CX-30, and the CX-5. However, in a marketplace awash in Chevys, Fords, Hondas, and Toyotas, Mazda has trouble standing apart from the established crowd.

What’s the solution? Move upscale into “premium” territory.

Premium is where Buick, Fiat, GMC, Jeep, Mini, and Volkswagen play to varying levels of success. Combining the value inherent in a mainstream brand with the design, materials, and technology common to luxury brands, these premium vehicles attempt to provide more than mainstream for less than luxury.

At the same time, less is more. Because the 2020 Mazda CX-5 has but four similarly sized competitors in the premium class, that makes it easier for a consumer to choose, and more likely that a consumer will buy. The trick is convincing people that Mazda is a premium brand, and the automaker is taking a pragmatic approach to this emotionally-charged solution.

2021 Acura RDX Reviews Summary

When Acura last redesigned the RDX for the 2019 model year, the company began a transformation that is now accelerating with the debut of the all-new 2021 TLX sedan and soon-to-arrive 2022 MDX SUV. Adopting the company’s latest exterior styling and interior design philosophies, as well as the completely rethought True Touch Interface infotainment system, the third-generation RDX confirmed Acura’s intent to return to the performance ethos that guided the brand during its early years. Now, according to Acura, the RDX is the bestselling model in its segment and one of the bestselling luxury vehicles in America. It is deserving of this stature.

Look and feel

2020 Mazda CX-5

9/10

2021 Acura RDX

9/10

The 2020 Mazda CX-5 was a testament to Mazda's commitment to delivering a premium experience beyond mere claims. This model year saw enhancements in standard equipment, cabin aesthetics, and noise reduction, all contributing to a more refined driving experience. The turbocharged engine received a torque boost, and AWD models gained an off-road traction assistance feature. With prices ranging from $25,190 to $37,155, the CX-5 offered various trims, including the luxurious Signature trim, which featured premium Nappa leather and real wood accents. Despite its upscale appeal, the interior's lack of contrast in the Caturra Brown leather diminished its premium feel.

In contrast, the 2021 Acura RDX, especially with the A-Spec Package, presented a sporty yet sophisticated exterior without excessive performance cues. Acura avoided off-road styling elements, focusing instead on a design meant for daily driving. The RDX A-Spec sat in the middle of the trim hierarchy, with prices starting at $38,200 and reaching $47,625 with additional features. The interior of the A-Spec trim boasted sport seats with simulated suede inserts, a sport steering wheel, and red ambient lighting, creating a dynamic atmosphere. However, the gauge cluster's red markings on a brushed silver background proved difficult to read, except at night.

Performance

2021 Acura RDX

9/10

The 2020 Mazda CX-5 offered a standard 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine producing 187 horsepower and 186 pound-feet of torque, paired with a six-speed automatic transmission. The turbocharged version, available in higher trims, delivered up to 250 hp and 320 lb-ft of torque with premium fuel. Despite its 3,825-pound curb weight, the CX-5 Signature accelerated confidently, though its fuel efficiency was lower than the naturally aspirated engine. The G-Vectoring Control Plus technology enhanced driving engagement, but excessive body motions detracted from the overall thrill. The steering and brakes were responsive, making the CX-5 enjoyable in typical driving situations.

The 2021 Acura RDX featured a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine generating 272 horsepower and 280 pound-feet of torque. A 10-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters was standard, and the SH-AWD system improved handling significantly. The Integrated Dynamics System allowed drivers to choose between various driving modes, enhancing the RDX's performance characteristics. A-Spec models came with 20-inch alloy wheels and performance tires, though the lack of adaptive dampers led to some body motion on uneven roads. Despite this, the RDX A-Spec offered a rewarding driving experience with precise steering and fade-resistant brakes.

Form and function

2021 Acura RDX

8/10

The 2020 Mazda CX-5, while moving upmarket, faced challenges with its interior space compared to competitors like the Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4. The cabin, however, exuded style and sophistication, with features like dual-zone climate control and heated seats in higher trims. The front seats were comfortable, though rear legroom was limited. Cargo space measured 30.9 cubic feet behind the rear seats, expanding to 59.6 cubic feet with the seats folded.

The 2021 Acura RDX, despite being a compact SUV, offered impressive passenger and cargo space. The front seats were highly adjustable and comfortable, especially in A-Spec trim. However, rear-seat comfort was compromised by a low and flat cushion, leading to a lack of leg support. Cargo volume was competitive, with 29.5 cubic feet behind the rear seats and 58.9 cubic feet with them folded. Additional storage compartments added practicality, though the infotainment system's design limited accessible storage.

Technology

The 2020 Mazda CX-5 featured the Mazda Connect infotainment system, which, while upscale, required acclimation. The system included a 7-inch touchscreen in Sport trim, with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto added in Touring trim. Higher trims offered an 8-inch touchscreen, Bose sound system, and navigation. Interaction options included the touchscreen, center console controls, and voice recognition, though none were ideal. Mazda planned to update the system in 2021, addressing some operational issues.

The 2021 Acura RDX introduced the True Touchpad Interface, a touch-sensing pad on the center console. While an improvement over Lexus's approach, it still required a learning curve and could be distracting. Acura included physical controls for stereo and climate functions, smartphone integration, and voice assistant technology. The A-Spec trim featured a 16-speaker Acura/ELS Studio 3D audio system, delivering excellent sound quality.

The 2020 Mazda CX-5 excelled in safety, with standard i-Activsense ADAS features like adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning, and lane-keep assist. It earned a Top Safety Pick+ rating from the IIHS and a five-star overall rating from the NHTSA, demonstrating its robust safety credentials.

The 2021 Acura RDX came equipped with AcuraWatch, offering adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, and automatic emergency braking. However, blind-spot warning and rear cross-traffic alert were only available with the Technology Package. The RDX earned a Top Safety Pick+ rating from the IIHS and a five-star overall rating from the NHTSA, though it received four-star ratings in frontal-impact and rollover resistance tests.
