2020 Lexus GX Reviews Summary

Depending on who you ask, the modern SUV will continue to dominate the new-car market until it's the only type of vehicle on the road (except pickup trucks). That prediction makes sense; modern SUVs drive like cars, can get through most snowstorms, and have the cargo space to tackle most of what daily life throws at them. They are great all-around vehicles, but in trying to master everything, many have lost the specialization that made them noteworthy in the first place. In particular, many luxury SUVs have lost their off-road credibility.

There are exceptions to this trend, including upmarket trims of the Jeep Grand Cherokee as well as most of the Land Rover lineup. Another brand that bucks the trend is Lexus. Sure, the Lexus RX pretty much created the modern luxury crossover, but it gets sold right alongside the immensely capable Lexus LX and this vehicle: the 2020 Lexus GX.

You’ll be forgiven if you forgot the GX was still available. Lexus has updated the GX for 2020 with fresh styling to make it a bit more memorable. Still, beneath that new exterior is one of the oldest vehicles offered today, and as you’ll learn, that has its advantages.

2021 Chrysler Pacifica Reviews Summary

The Chrysler Pacifica minivan has undergone a styling and tech refresh for the 2021 model year. It continues to deliver what families want and need from a daily driver. Chrysler continues to offer the model with either a traditional V6 engine or hybrid powertrain and has upped the ante with a new premium Pinnacle trim level. With 97 standard safety features and gobs of well-designed storage space, it’s easy to see why the Pacifica is the perfect choice for many families.

2020 Lexus GX

7/10

2021 Chrysler Pacifica

9/10

The 2020 Lexus GX, despite its age, continued to hold its own with a rugged charm. Introduced in 2002 and redesigned in 2010, the GX maintained its second-generation design with some modern tweaks, including the bold hourglass grille that became a signature of the Lexus lineup. While this grille was polarizing on other models, it suited the GX well, giving it a distinctive presence. The vehicle's decade-old design was evident, especially in the cabin, which retained the chunky center console and large buttons typical of early 2010s Lexus styling. However, this simplicity worked in favor of the GX, especially for those who appreciated its rugged capabilities over modern innovations.

In contrast, the 2021 Chrysler Pacifica underwent a mid-generation refresh that enhanced its exterior with a more muscular aesthetic. The new hexagonal grille and LED headlights gave the Pacifica a modern look, while the all-LED taillamp added a touch of sophistication. Inside, the Pacifica balanced practicality with premium touches, especially in the Pinnacle trim, which featured quilted leather seats and upscale finishes. The flat dashboard design, anchored by a 10.1-inch touchscreen, provided a modern and user-friendly interface, making the Pacifica a strong contender in the minivan market.

Performance

2021 Chrysler Pacifica

8/10

The 2020 Lexus GX was powered by a 4.6-liter V8 engine, delivering 301 horsepower and 329 pound-feet of torque through a 6-speed automatic transmission to a standard 4-wheel drive system. While these figures might not impress compared to modern engines, the V8 provided a robust driving experience, especially off-road. The GX's steering, though initially light, proved to be direct and responsive, and the self-leveling air suspension offered a smooth ride. The GX excelled in off-road conditions, thanks to its 4WD system and various chassis controls, making it a capable vehicle for adventurous drivers. However, its fuel economy was less impressive, with an average of 16.3 mpg.

The 2021 Chrysler Pacifica offered two powertrain options: a traditional 3.6-liter V6 engine with 287 horsepower and a hybrid version with a combined 260 horsepower. The hybrid model provided an all-electric range of over 30 miles and a total range exceeding 500 miles, with an impressive 82 MPGe. The Pacifica's AWD system, available for the first time in 16 years, activated on-demand based on driving conditions, enhancing its versatility. The traditional V6 achieved 22 mpg combined, while the AWD version slightly reduced efficiency to 20 mpg combined. The Pacifica's powertrain options catered to a range of driving needs, from efficiency to all-weather capability.

Form and function

2021 Chrysler Pacifica

9/10

The 2020 Lexus GX offered a practical interior with available second-row captain's chairs and power-folding third-row seats in the Luxury trim. However, accessing the third row was challenging for adults, and the cargo space was limited to 64.7 cubic feet with all seats folded. The side-opening rear hatch was unique but not particularly advantageous, though the separately opening rear window was a convenient feature.

The 2021 Chrysler Pacifica was designed with family life in mind, featuring spacious seating and ample storage options. The power-sliding rear doors and Stow 'n Go seating system provided flexibility and convenience, while the under-console storage and sliding bin in the second row added practicality. The Pacifica's cargo area was generous, with best-in-class total storage of 227.6 liters, making it ideal for family travel.

Technology

8/10

The 2020 Lexus GX's infotainment system showed its age, lacking Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. However, its simplicity and true touchscreen interface were appreciated by those who preferred straightforward controls over modern complexities.

The 2021 Chrysler Pacifica featured the advanced Uconnect 5 infotainment system, offering a customizable and responsive interface with standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The second-row entertainment system remained an option, and the Pinnacle trim included the innovative FamCam interior monitoring camera. The available Harman Kardon sound systems provided a premium audio experience, enhancing the Pacifica's appeal.

Safety

The 2020 Lexus GX came equipped with the Lexus Safety System+, including forward-collision warning, adaptive cruise control, and automatic high beams. Blind-spot monitoring and a surround-view camera were also available, contributing to the GX's safety credentials.

The 2021 Chrysler Pacifica boasted 97 standard safety features, increasing to 100 in the Pinnacle trim. Key technologies included forward-collision warning, adaptive cruise control, and automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection. The Pacifica received a five-star overall rating from the NHTSA, underscoring its commitment to safety.
