Last year, Hyundai changed its approach to the Santa Fe. The smaller five-passenger Santa Fe Sport got drop-kicked from the automaker’s lineup, replaced by this completely redesigned version of the SUV. The larger seven-passenger Santa Fe got a new name for one year (Santa Fe XL), and then the all-new 2020 Hyundai Palisade replaced that vehicle.

With the Palisade’s arrival, there is just one Santa Fe for 2020, a five-passenger crossover that resides in a sweet spot between traditional compact and midsize models. It gets several updates, too, including a standard rear-seat reminder system, an available camera-based Blind-Spot View Monitor system, and new design accents to better distinguish the top trim level.

The Traverse is a three-row crossover of the type that has largely eliminated the minivan from showrooms. As the new default choice for larger families, the three-row crossover has spawned a competitive market segment, encompassing the Ford Explorer, Honda Pilot, Hyundai Palisade, Kia Telluride, Mazda CX-9, Nissan Pathfinder, Subaru Ascent, Toyota Highlander, and Volkswagen Atlas. So buyers aren’t exactly lacking in choices here.

The current-generation Traverse dates back to the 2018 model year, so it’s not the newest vehicle in the segment, but still fairly fresh. Chevy had some updates planned for the 2021 model year—including minor styling changes and wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto connectivity—but they’ve been pushed to 2022. However, these changes don’t appear significant enough to justify waiting around for the 2022 Traverse, which is scheduled to reach dealerships later this year.

For 2021, the Traverse is available in L, LS, LT Cloth, LT Leather, RS, Premier, and High Country trim levels, with standard front-wheel drive (FWD) or optional all-wheel drive (AWD). Our test car was an AWD Traverse RS model.

Buyers could select from various paint colors, interior options, and dealer-installed accessories. The Santa Fe's design was bold and experimental, featuring a distinctive grille, stacked lighting elements, and unique fender stampings. Inside, the dual-cowl dashboard and diamond-textured speaker grilles added character, though the materials didn't quite match the high-style design. Despite this, the build quality was excellent, and the controls were refined. The 2020 Hyundai Santa Fe had a base curb weight ranging from 3,591 to 3,946 pounds, and its standard 185-horsepower 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine was not the preferred choice. The turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, producing 235 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque, was a better option, especially for those living at higher altitudes. The eight-speed automatic transmission directed power to the front wheels, with AWD available to mitigate torque steer.
