Engine Sputters On Load

What would cause my engine to sputter when traveling at 40 mph, there are no engine lights on.

2007 F-150 (5.4 V8 125,00mi)

At low revs (1000-2000 rpm) the engine seems to balk while going up slight grades. It stops when you give it more power. Am I wrong to think it could be the transmission?
