The Jeep Cherokee's current nationwide average price is $15,340, and its lowest point over the past year was $15,339. Recently, prices have come down for the 2021 and 2022 models, making now a good time to shop recent model years.
Is the Jeep Cherokee a good car?
Yes — the Jeep Cherokee earns a strong overall reputation with shoppers who value comfort, capability, and everyday usefulness. The all-generations owner rating is 4.46/5 across every model year in the data.
Owners repeatedly praise the Cherokee for its comfortable ride, useful interior space, and Jeep character, along with the value it offers across many model years. Many also highlight its off-road ability, user-friendly features, and strong performance in higher-trim or better-equipped versions.
Expert reviews rate the 2016 and 2014 models among the highest across all years.
The main trade-offs show up in efficiency, powertrain smoothness on some versions, and the complexity of certain vehicle settings on newer models.
32.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
Are Jeep Cherokee models reliable?
Owners and experts consistently point to the Cherokee’s comfort, versatility, and rugged character as core strengths. Across the lineup, shoppers also tend to value its useful capability, spacious cabin, and everyday drivability.
- Owners rate the Jeep Cherokee between 3.86 and 5.0 out of 5 stars across all model years in the data.
For used buyers, long-term ownership risk is most worth watching on older model years, where reliability concerns and repair history deserve extra attention.
What should I look for when buying a used Jeep Cherokee?
Across all model years, at 70.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
| Model Year | Accident-Free % |
|---|---|
| 2026 | 98.6% |
| 2023 | 85.8% |
| 2022 | 82% |
| 2021 | 77.8% |
| 2020 | 71.7% |
| 2019 | 69.2% |
| 2018 | 67.1% |
| 2017 | 63.7% |
| 2016 | 61.9% |
| 2015 | 59.8% |
| 2014 | 58.1% |
Older model years carry meaningfully higher accident rates, so always verify the vehicle history report on pre-2021 models.
Key things to evaluate:
- Safety package: forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-keep assist, adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go functionality, and Active Driving Assist
- Infotainment: a 12.3-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, plus a 10.2-inch digital instrument cluster
- Fuel efficiency: 37 mpg combined (39 mpg city, 35 mpg highway)
Which Jeep Cherokee trim should I buy?
The 2026 Jeep Cherokee offers these trims:
- Base: The entry model gives you the Cherokee’s standard hybrid powertrain, standard all-wheel drive, a 12.3-inch touchscreen, a 10.2-inch digital instrument cluster, and standard driver-assistance features. It’s the best-value starting point if you want the core Cherokee experience without moving up the lineup.
- Laredo: This trim adds more equipment while keeping the same overall Cherokee formula, and it’s a smart step up if you want a better-balanced mix of features and price.
- Limited: This trim adds leatherette seats, wireless device charging, and the Cherokee’s more upscale everyday feel, making it a strong choice if you want more comfort and convenience.
- Overland: This top trim adds 20-inch wheels, traffic-sign recognition, built-in navigation, and the most premium cabin presentation in the lineup.
What Jeep Cherokee do most buyers choose?
The Jeep Cherokee years with the most listings are 2020, 2019, and 2018.
| Model Year | Total Listings | Good + Great Deals % |
|---|---|---|
| 2020 | 5,402 | 32.5% |
| 2019 | 4,883 | 32.1% |
| 2018 | 4,389 | 32.1% |
| 2021 | 3,310 | 33.1% |
| 2016 | 2,399 | 30.9% |
| 2017 | 2,344 | 31.1% |
These years tend to draw the most attention because they sit in the sweet spot between price, availability, and feature content. You also get a broad range of trims and equipment choices, which makes it easier to find one that fits your budget and priorities.
What is the Jeep Cherokee's resale value?
| Model Year | Current Avg. Price | Year-Over-Year Change |
|---|---|---|
| 2021 | $18,954 | −10.33% |
| 2019 | $14,812 | −9.93% |
| 2018 | $12,896 | −9.89% |
| 2022 | $22,947 | −8.99% |
| 2020 | $16,852 | −8.26% |
| 2016 | $10,556 | −8.22% |
| 2015 | $9,582 | −7.93% |
| 2014 | $8,844 | −6.77% |
| 2017 | $11,797 | −6.12% |
| 2023 | $23,748 | +1.44% |
Most Cherokee model years are moving lower year over year, which can work in your favor if you’re shopping used. The biggest drops are concentrated in several recent and mid-cycle years, while one newer year is still edging upward. That mix suggests you may find stronger value in the years that have already softened the most.
The 2023, 2017, and 2014 model years have held their value best, with the smallest year-over-year price changes.
Is the Jeep Cherokee safe?
- 2026: 7/10
- 2021: 7/10
- 2016: 6/10
- 2014: 8/10
For the safest used buy, the 2014 model posts the highest confirmed score of 8/10.
Should I buy a used Jeep Cherokee now or wait for the next model?
Buy now if:
- Price trend: The 2022 model is at −8.99% versus a year ago, and the 2021 model is at −10.33%.
- Deal availability: The 2021 model has 33.1% good and great deals.
- Sweet-spot year: The 2020 model has the most listings at a current average price of $16,852. The Jeep Cherokee offers a recognizable Jeep badge, useful capability, and a comfortable everyday driving character.
Consider waiting if:
- Powertrain/efficiency: The new Cherokee’s specs don’t seem very Jeep-like at first. The only powertrain available at launch consists of a 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine connected to a two-motor hybrid system with a planetary gearset taking the place of a conventional transmission, similar to what Subaru and Toyota use. It’s good for 210 horsepower and 230 pound-feet of torque.
- Tech: The 2026 Cherokee comes standard with a 12.3-inch touchscreen and a 10.2-inch digital instrument cluster, still running the same Uconnect 5 infotainment system as the outgoing Cherokee from the 2023 model year. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto remain standard.
- Safety: Jeep offers similar standard driver-assistance features to other mainstream brands, including forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-keep assist, and adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go functionality. Active Driving Assist, which pairs automated lane centering with adaptive cruise control for highway driving, is also standard.

This car has tank-like features. This car has good value. This car is missing remote start. I would compare this vehicle to a Chevrolet Traverse.

I had a 2019 Cherokee Trailhawk a few years ago and I fell in love with the Cherokee ls after that. Sadly I had to part ways with the original one I had but being able to find another Cherokee at a good price and mileage is amazing. I love the ride it provides! Great sound system, modern interior and design, quiet ride in the cab with minimal road noise and incredibly comfortable. Love the Cherokees!

Why it stands out
The 2020 Jeep Cherokee stands out as a compact SUV that blends everyday usability with Jeep’s familiar all-weather capability. By this point in the third-generation Cherokee’s run, it had already moved away from the boxier, more truck-like image of earlier Cherokees and into a softer crossover shape, but it still offered the kind of traction and adventure-minded character that helped it appeal to buyers who wanted something more distinctive than a typical small SUV. It also remained a value-oriented choice in a market where Jeep’s four-wheel-drive capability and styling were among its main selling points.
For 2020, Jeep introduced new wheels and colors across various trims, including Sangria and Spitfire Orange, and added Alexa to Uconnect 8.4 systems with navigation. The Cherokee’s equipment list was already fairly broad, with a 7-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto having become standard the year before, and the model also offered a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine with 270 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque alongside the V6. Buyers looking for a more rugged version could still find the Trailhawk’s off-road-focused hardware in this generation, while the Cherokee’s cabin and feature content helped it feel more modern than its exterior shape might suggest.
There are trade-offs, though. The buying guide notes poor efficiency and some bad engines through the years, and it also points to major transmission issues in early third-generation models. For 2020 specifically, the Cherokee’s appeal is strongest if you want a Jeep-branded compact SUV with available power, a comfortable ride, and a well-equipped interior, while accepting that it was not the most trouble-free or most efficient choice in its class.
