For long-term ownership, you should pay close attention to model-year history and maintenance records, especially on older examples where reported issues appear more often.
What should I look for when buying a used Ford Mustang?
Across all model years, at 70.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
| Model Year | Accident-Free % |
|---|---|
| 2026 | 91.6% |
| 2025 | 89.2% |
| 2024 | 86.6% |

| 2017 | 54% |
| 2016 | 55.1% |
| 2015 | 55% |
| 2014 | 57.3% |
Older model years carry meaningfully higher accident rates, so always verify the vehicle history report on pre-2022 models.
Key things to evaluate:
- Safety package: frontal collision warning with automatic emergency braking, lane-keep assist, a blind-spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert, rear parking sensors, rain-sensing wipers, and automatic high beams
- Infotainment: a large 13.2-inch infotainment touchscreen with the Sync 4 infotainment system, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Amazon Alexa integration
- Fuel efficiency: The EPA estimates the four-cylinder EcoBoost will return 22 mpg city, 33 mpg highway, and 26 mpg in combined driving. The V8-powered GT is rated at 15/24 mpg city/highway and 18 mpg combined with the automatic transmission.
Which Ford Mustang trim should I buy?
The 2024 Ford Mustang offers these trims:
- EcoBoost: the entry choice with the 2.3-liter turbo four-cylinder, 10-speed automatic, and the broadest access point to the lineup; best if you want the lowest starting point and everyday performance.
- GT: adds the 5.0-liter V8, six-speed manual, and a more serious muscle-car character; this is the best-value trim for shoppers who want the classic Mustang experience.
- Dark Horse: the top performance model with 500 hp and additional performance enhancements for buyers who want the most focused version in the range.
What Ford Mustang do most buyers choose?
The Ford Mustang years with the most listings are 2025, 2024, and 2023.
| Model Year | Total Listings | Good + Great Deals % |
|---|---|---|
| 2025 | 2,947 | 33.2% |
| 2024 | 2,876 | 33.9% |
| 2023 | 2,629 | 34.8% |
| 2020 | 2,102 | 33.3% |
| 2021 | 2,091 | 34.1% |
| 2019 | 1,940 | 32.1% |
These higher-volume years tend to be popular because they give you more listings to compare and a strong mix of pricing and deal availability. That usually makes it easier to find the right combination of condition, equipment, and budget.
What is the Ford Mustang's resale value?
| Model Year | Current Avg. Price | Year-Over-Year Change |
|---|---|---|
| 2025 | $42,058 | −6.44% |
| 2016 | $18,578 | −5.89% |
| 2020 | $25,418 | −4.05% |
| 2017 | $20,890 | −3.77% |
| 2015 | $19,759 | −2.7% |
| 2019 | $25,857 | −2.55% |
| 2021 | $30,492 | −1.83% |
| 2024 | $38,169 | −0.03% |
| 2018 | $22,462 | +0.76% |
| 2014 | $15,670 | +1.61% |
| 2022 | $34,002 | +3.46% |
| 2023 | $31,662 | +6.19% |
Most model years in the table are down year over year, which points to softer pricing for used buyers across much of the lineup. A few years are flat or rising, so the market is not moving in one direction across every model year. The biggest drops are concentrated in the newer and mid-cycle years, while some older examples are showing modest gains.
The 2018 and 2024 model years are holding steady, with prices close to flat year-over-year.
The 2023, 2022, and 2014 model years have held their value best, with prices flat to rising year-over-year.

CarGurus recommends the 2023 Ford Mustang
Summary
With 2,673 currently listed for sale and an average price of $31,666, 33.7% of 2023 Ford Mustang listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2023 Ford Mustang 5 / 5 stars.

Why it stands out
The 2023 Ford Mustang stands out because it sits at the end of the sixth generation, a long-running redesign that began for the 2015 model year and brought a sleeker, smoother look, coupe and soft-top convertible body styles, and an independent rear suspension. It also marked the first time Ford produced and marketed the Mustang for a global audience, and it was the first Mustang to feature Ford’s EcoBoost engine lineup. That combination gives the 2023 Mustang broad appeal: it remains a rear-wheel-drive sports car with a familiar formula, but it also offers a wider range of engines and transmissions than many rivals.
For 2023, the Mustang could be had with Ford’s EcoBoost turbocharged 2.3-liter inline four-cylinder engine, while other available engines included a 3.7-liter V6, the 5.0-liter Coyote V8, and two versions of the 5.2-liter V8. Transmission choices included two six-speed manuals, six- and 10-speed automatics, and a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic. That variety is one of the Mustang’s biggest strengths, since it lets buyers choose between everyday usability and serious performance. At the same time, shoppers should be aware that EcoBoost models are known for problems with oil consumption and potential head gasket failure, and the transmission may be prone to slippage.
Pricing also helps explain the Mustang’s appeal as a used buy. The average listing price for a 2023 Mustang is about $32,300, which keeps it within reach for shoppers who want an iconic performance car without stepping into the newest model year. Owners also tend to praise its performance, styling, and value, along with the convertible option and strong sound system. On the downside, some buyers note that it lacks luxury features, so the 2023 Mustang is best understood as a driver-focused car first and a comfort-first cruiser second.
