CarGurus Analysis: 2023 Toyota Sienna
overall

Summary
With 1,323 currently listed for sale and an average price of $42,463.00, 32.1% of 2023 Toyota Siennas for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2023 Toyota Sienna 4.11 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.67 / 10.
85.5% of 2023 Sienna models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2023 Toyota Sienna stands out in the minivan class because it uses a standard hybrid engine. That alone gives it a different identity from many family haulers, and it helps explain why the Sienna is often appealing to shoppers who want practicality without giving up fuel efficiency. It is also described as spacious, which fits the minivan mission well, and its standard advanced safety features add to its family-friendly appeal.
At the same time, the 2023 Toyota Sienna is not without compromises. The second-row seats aren’t removable, which limits some of the flexibility buyers may expect from a minivan. It is also described as having sluggish acceleration and an irritating transmission, so drivers looking for quick responses may find it less satisfying. Even so, for buyers who prioritize efficiency, roominess, and safety, the Sienna offers a compelling mix of strengths.

Awesome ride, comfort and great mpg. Good looking too. However, backup camera resolution can be improved. Spare tire should come as standard in a minivan.

2023 Sienna XLE 7 passenger AWD My Grandchildrens Favorite! It has lots of room..they can slide the seats back and have living room comfort. They like the rear USB charging ports, rear AC/heat controls, and they can always fit friends back there with them, and their gear. I like it because its comfortable, safe, and gets 35 miles per gallon. The All Wheel Drive is best..most of those available are Front wheel drive. In recent snowstorms, I saw many other vehicles slid off the road, but I never spun a wheel with the AWD. Fantastic resale value, if I ever want to sell it, such as if my needs change. The hybrid is quiet, smooth, and, actually has more horsepower than the older Sienna V6, because the battery assists with extra power when in sport mode. Now, for what I dont like: Irritating Apple car play, when you plug the maps in, you have to wait, and wait, for the directions to appear. Too slow. Apparently, there is no way to upgrade to Toyota Safety Sense 3.0, which apparenly solves that problem. Its unclear why Toyota cant/wont allow the software upgrade to make the Apple Car play faster and not frustrating. The back part of the van is difficult to enter, especially for large adults with knee problems. Young adults, under 200 pounds wont have a problem. We carry a step stool so my wife can enter the rear of the van when desired. I do agree, the 3rd seat, when folded down, kind of bounces, unless you set something on it like groceries, suitcases, cargo mat, etc, but that has never caused us any problem. While I have read of unable to start problems because the battery ran down mostly due to defective foot activated door sensors in the 2022 model, I have not had the problem in the 2023 Sienna. For that reason, I recommend avoiding the 2022 Sienna, and go with 2023. I have no desire to go out to my van, and then not be able to start it because the battery is dead, and for that to happen multiple times. I have never had a dead battery in my 2023. It works great every time, except for the issues I mentioned, above. Lastly, my Sienna came with only one key, this is as convient as a broken leg, and they take forever to get me the promised new key...which has never arrived.

Is the 2023 Toyota Sienna a good car?
Generally — the 2023 Toyota Sienna earns 4.11/5 from owners and 7.67/10 from experts. The model scores 9/10 across Cost effectiveness and Safety.
Owners consistently praise its fuel efficiency, spaciousness, and comfort, and many highlight the hybrid setup as a major advantage for family use. The review summary also points to strong gas mileage and a practical, family-friendly character. On the downside, some owners mention less power than they expected and occasional tech frustrations.
That lines up with the expert take: the Sienna is framed as a practical minivan for shoppers who want roominess and efficiency, especially for family duty. The main trade-offs are sluggish acceleration and an irritating transmission, plus the second-row seats aren’t removable. Even so, the market shows 31.3% good or great deals, which suggests there are still attractive listings to find.
Is the 2023 Toyota Sienna reliable?
Owners rate it 4.11/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback points to a vehicle that many shoppers find dependable in daily family use, with repeated praise for its fuel efficiency, comfort, and overall practicality. The expert evaluation also describes the technology as reliable, even if the interface itself feels dated and a bit clunky. Toyota’s standard safety equipment and hybrid-only setup further support the sense that this is built for steady long-term ownership.
If you’re buying used, the main long-term risk is less about outright durability and more about whether the specific example has been maintained well and still feels fresh in everyday use.
What should I look for when buying a used 2023 Toyota Sienna?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 85.8% — always verify the vehicle history report.
Start with a history report so you can confirm accident status, title history, and prior use. Then prioritize a thorough inspection of the hybrid system, cabin condition, and any signs that the vehicle has seen heavy family-duty wear. Because this model is often chosen for practicality, you should pay close attention to how well the interior, seats, and tech features have held up.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base LE is the entry point, while the XLE adds standard LED fog lights, power-sliding doors, and a power liftgate. The LE and XLE are also the trims that can seat eight passengers, while higher trims focus more on comfort and style.
- Powertrain: Every model uses a 2.5-liter four-cylinder hybrid setup with two front electric motors, plus a third rear motor on all-wheel-drive versions. Output is 245 net system horsepower, and the powertrain is efficient but not especially quick.
- Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense-style driver assistance is standard, including automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning with steering assist, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, automatic high beams, and adaptive cruise control. There are no major trim-level gaps called out in the standard safety equipment.
- Infotainment: The Sienna uses a 9-inch touchscreen with standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Bluetooth, SiriusXM, an optional navigation system, and seven USB ports. CarPlay and Android Auto require a wired connection, and the interface is described as older and somewhat clunky.
- Fuel efficiency: The AWD model is rated at 35 mpg city, 36 highway, and 35 combined, while FWD versions are rated at 36 mpg across the board.
Which 2023 Toyota Sienna trim should I buy?
The 2023 Toyota Sienna is offered in 6 trim levels: LE, XLE, XSE, Limited, Platinum, and 25th Anniversary Special Edition.
Here's the short version:
- Base trim: The LE gets you into the Sienna lineup, but it misses the added convenience features that make the higher trims easier to live with, especially the power-sliding doors and power liftgate highlighted on the XLE.
- Sweet-spot trim: The XLE looks like the best value because it adds standard LED fog lights, power-sliding doors, and a power liftgate without jumping all the way to the pricier luxury-oriented trims.
- Premium/top trim: The Platinum is the most upscale choice, with the highest-end cabin presentation and the most premium feel in the lineup.
- Off-road trim: The 25th Anniversary Special Edition sits below the Limited in price and is more about commemorative styling than daily-driver practicality.
The standard safety package is a strong reason to shop this model year, and it comes standard across the lineup.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2023 Toyota Sienna?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently but still move quickly on the right listing.
- Deal availability: 31.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,360 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 1.63% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 85.8% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $40,924.45, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2023 Toyota Sienna's resale value?
The current average of $42,440 sits slightly below last year's $43,145.
That price movement suggests the market has eased a bit, which can help you buy at a more favorable point if you’re planning to keep the vehicle for several years. For a future seller, the current softness means resale upside may be more limited in the short term, especially if supply stays healthy. Still, a well-kept Sienna should remain appealing because shoppers continue to value its efficiency, space, and family-friendly setup.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.11/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2023 Toyota Sienna safe?
It earns five-star ratings from NHTSA, and the mechanically identical 2022 Sienna received a Top Safety Pick+ designation from IIHS.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
Toyota equips the Sienna with a strong standard driver-assistance suite that includes automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning with steering assist, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, automatic high beams, and adaptive cruise control. That standard safety content is a major strength for a family vehicle, and it helps explain why the Sienna scores so well in expert safety evaluation.
Should I buy a 2023 Toyota Sienna or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2023 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2023 if:
- 31.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 85.8% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 1.63% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.11/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- It combines standard hybrid efficiency with strong safety equipment and family-friendly practicality.
Consider the 2022 if:
- At $37,497, the 2022 costs less than the current year's $42,440 average.
- It carries over the redesigned hybrid formula and adds a Woodland trim for buyers who want a more adventurous look.
Consider the 2024 if:
- At $45,293, the 2024 costs more than the current year's $42,440 average.
- It emphasizes comfort, value, and everyday usefulness with a more modern efficiency-focused approach.
The bottom line: If you want the best balance of current pricing, strong safety, and hybrid efficiency, the 2023 is the sensible target. If your priority is saving money, the 2022 is the better value play; if you want the newer model-year experience and don’t mind paying more, the 2024 is the upgrade path.
