How much does the 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan cost?

Prices have softened 12.00% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.

There are 4,872 listings available, which suggests you have a healthy amount of inventory to compare.

Is the 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan a good car?

Yes — you’re looking at a 4.6/5 owner-rated SUV with an expert score of 7.7/10. The model scores 9/10 across Form and function and Safety.

Owners consistently praise its technology, safety features, comfort, and user-friendly interface, and they also like how it handles different driving conditions. The main trade-off is that some drivers mention infotainment customization frustrations and build-quality concerns after accidents.

That lines up well with the Tiguan’s use case as a compact SUV that feels more substantial than many rivals and is easy to recommend if you value everyday usefulness. With 39.8% of listings marked as good or great deals, the market still offers some attractive opportunities.

Is the 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan reliable?

Owners rate it 4.6/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

The owner feedback points to a vehicle that feels dependable in daily use, with praise for comfort, technology, and capability across different driving conditions. The expert review also notes that Volkswagen includes two years of complimentary scheduled maintenance, which helps reduce early ownership costs.

That said, used buyers should still pay close attention to accident history and repair quality, especially if a listing has been in a collision.

What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan?

Accident-free inventory is solid at 83.7% — always verify the vehicle history report.

You should still run a history report on any candidate, even if the listing looks clean at first glance. A pre-purchase inspection is especially important if you’re considering a higher-mileage example or one with prior bodywork. Focus on cabin condition, infotainment behavior, and evidence that the safety and driver-assistance systems work as intended.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The lineup includes S, SE, SE R-Line Black, and SEL R-Line. The base S gets standard LED headlights, keyless entry with push-button start, heated front seats, Front Assist, Side Assist, and a 6.5-inch touchscreen, while higher trims add features such as remote start, a panoramic glass sunroof, richer cabin materials, and more upscale technology.
• Powertrain: The Tiguan uses a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with 184 horsepower and 221 pound-feet of torque, paired with an eight-speed automatic. Front-wheel drive is standard, and 4Motion all-wheel drive is available.
• Safety package: Front Assist and Side Assist are standard on the Tiguan S, and IQ Drive adds Travel Assist and Emergency Assist. Travel Assist combines adaptive cruise control with lane-centering assistance, while Emergency Assist can slow the SUV and bring it to a stop if the driver becomes unresponsive. Make sure the system engages properly, since the touch-sensing steering-wheel controls can be finicky.
• Infotainment: The base S uses MIB2 with a 6.5-inch touchscreen, while most versions get MIB3 with an 8-inch touchscreen, standard Car-Net connected services, standard App-Connect smartphone mirroring, and SiriusXM 360L. The SEL R-Line adds a 10.25-inch Digital Cockpit Pro display and a redesigned navigation system.
• Fuel efficiency: The EPA says the R-Line with 4Motion will get no better than 24 mpg in combined driving.

Which 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan trim should I buy?

The 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan is offered in 4 trim levels: S, SE, SE R-Line Black, and SEL R-Line.

Here's the short version:

• S: This is the value play if you want the Tiguan’s core strengths without paying for extras. You still get standard safety tech, heated front seats, keyless entry with push-button start, and the basic infotainment setup, so it covers the essentials well.
• SE: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds remote engine start and moves you into the more capable MIB3 infotainment system with an 8-inch touchscreen, Car-Net connected services, App-Connect, and SiriusXM 360L.
• SE R-Line Black: Choose this if you want the sportier blacked-out appearance and a more distinctive look without jumping all the way to the top trim.
• SEL R-Line: This is the most upscale version, with richer cabin materials, the 10.25-inch Digital Cockpit Pro display, redesigned navigation, premium audio, and standard Park Assist.

The safety package starts with Front Assist and Side Assist on the S, while Travel Assist and Emergency Assist are part of the IQ Drive collection.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan?

This is a moderate market for selective buyers, with enough inventory and deal activity to make comparison shopping worthwhile.

• Deal availability: 39.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 4,872 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 12.00% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 83.7% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $19,799, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan's resale value?

The current average of $19,799 sits slightly below last year's $22,499.

That decline suggests the Tiguan has moved into a more buyer-friendly pricing zone, which can help future resale if you buy at the right number. If you pay close to the current average or below it, you give yourself a better chance of limiting depreciation exposure later. Strong demand for practical, well-liked SUVs can also help support used-market interest over time.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.6/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan safe?

The 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan earned a “Top Safety Pick” rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

Front Assist, which includes forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and pedestrian detection, is standard on the Tiguan S. Side Assist with blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert is also standard, and Volkswagen’s IQ Drive suite adds Travel Assist and Emergency Assist. Travel Assist combines adaptive cruise control with lane-centering assistance, while Emergency Assist can slow the SUV and bring it to a stop if the driver becomes unresponsive.

One caveat is that the touch-sensing steering-wheel controls can make Travel Assist harder to activate than it should be, so you should confirm it is engaged before relying on it.

Should I buy a 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2022 if:

• 39.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Accident-free inventory is solid at 83.7% — always verify the vehicle history report.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 12.00% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.6/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It adds new safety technology while refining the Tiguan’s proven formula.

Consider the 2021 if:

• At $16,831, the 2021 costs less than the current year's $19,799 average.
• It emphasizes space and everyday usability.

Consider the 2023 if:

• At $21,874, the 2023 costs more than the current year's $19,799 average.
• It feels larger inside and offers a third-row seat.

The bottom line: If you want the best balance of updated safety tech, strong owner satisfaction, and current-market pricing, the 2022 is the primary pick. If your budget is tighter, the 2021 is the price-sensitive alternative, while the 2023 makes sense if you want the extra space and third-row flexibility.
