CarGurus Analysis: 2022 Toyota Tacoma
overall

Summary
With 6,260 currently listed for sale and an average price of $33,451, 31.6% of 2022 Toyota Tacomas for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2022 Toyota Tacoma 4.36 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.5 / 10.

Why it stands out
The 2022 Toyota Tacoma stands out as a small pickup that still draws buyers with its off-road ability, even as it shows its age. It also offers modern tech and safety features, and its technology is described as easy to use. For shoppers who want a smaller alternative to a full-size pickup, it remains a strong choice, especially if the truck will spend part of its life commuting and part of it heading out for camping, kayaking, or mountain biking trips.
Its appeal is also practical: the bed is well suited to hauling supplies for a weekend project, and a manual transmission is available. At the same time, the 2022 Toyota Tacoma has some clear drawbacks, including an underwhelming base engine, a cramped back seat, and poor ride quality.

It has every feature I was looking for except BSM. Definitely a good value compared to others with the same opinions and miles. There really isnt any other models out there to compare it too. It is an awesome truck.

We have owned it 4 days. The Tacoma has great reviews and is very reliable. The V6 engine has enough power and still gets decent gas mileage.

Reviewed a 2022 Toyota SR5 V6 Double Cab 4WD on Feb 7, 2023
For years, all I wanted was a Toyota Tacoma, but the price tag always scared me off. Finally, I had the opportunity to purchase a brand new 2022 Taco, at a lower price than a used one (crazy times). While I loved the idea of owning vehicle, and of course, the looks, usability seemed to have been lacking. For the price, the Tacoma seems to lack in features that their competitors have (Colorado, Canyon, 1500, etc), and the seating is quite cramped. Anyone sitting in the backseat, with the exception of my 5 year old daughter was uncomfortable. In addition, the finish details lacked in quality (plastics), again, for the price. No doubt that the Tacoma has built an exceptional reputation based on reliability, but I feel like the competitors are starting the unseat the mid-sized stalwart. After 4k miles, I sold the truck and went in a different direction. All said, damn that truck looked good!

With 30.4% of listings marked as good or great deals, the market still gives you some room to shop carefully.
Is the 2022 Toyota Tacoma reliable?
Owners rate it 4.36/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
User feedback points to reliability, trouble-free ownership, and a truck you can count on, especially if you value durability and long-term confidence. The expert evaluation also describes it as supremely trusty and durable, with a build suited to hard use and active lifestyles. Toyota’s maintenance-friendly reputation is reinforced by the truck’s practical, old-school approach, and that can be a plus if you want something straightforward to live with.
For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is that age-related wear may show up in ride quality, cabin condition, and drivetrain feel, so condition matters a lot.
What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Toyota Tacoma?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 80.9% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still run a history report on any truck you’re considering, even if the listing looks clean. Prioritize a pre-purchase inspection that focuses on suspension wear, cabin condition, and how the truck drives at low and highway speeds. Because this model is known for capability more than refinement, you should pay close attention to whether the specific truck feels well cared for.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The SR starts with 16-inch steel wheels, a 7-inch touchscreen, and the Toyota Safety Sense suite, while higher trims add fog lights, larger screens, alloy wheels, leather, and more comfort features. The base trim is the most stripped-down, so you should compare it carefully against the SR5 and TRD models if you want more everyday convenience.
- Powertrain: The base 2.7-liter four-cylinder makes 159 horsepower and 180 pound-feet of torque, while the optional 3.5-liter V6 makes 278 hp and 265 lb-ft. The V6 is the better choice for most shoppers, and the TRD models can also be had with a six-speed manual transmission.
- Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense is standard and includes forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, automatic high beams, adaptive cruise control, and lane-departure warning. Blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and rear parking sensors are optional, so check whether a used truck has those extras.
- Infotainment: The base truck uses a 7-inch touchscreen, while most trims get an 8-inch screen. Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Amazon Alexa are supported, and the system is described as easy to use with a basic layout and large icons.
- Fuel efficiency: The rear-wheel-drive four-cylinder returns 20 mpg city, 23 mpg highway, and 21 mpg combined, while the rear-wheel-drive V6 returns 19 mpg city, 24 mpg highway, and 21 mpg combined. With 4WD, the four-cylinder returns 19 mpg city, 22 mpg highway, and 20 mpg combined, and the V6 returns 18 mpg city, 22 mpg highway, and 20 mpg combined.
Which 2022 Toyota Tacoma trim should I buy?
The 2022 Toyota Tacoma is offered in 6 trim levels: SR, SR5, TRD Sport, TRD Off-Road, Limited, and TRD Pro.
Here's the short version:
- SR: This is the value starting point, but it is also the most basic version. You get the core Tacoma setup, standard Toyota Safety Sense, and the smaller 7-inch touchscreen, so it suits you best if price matters more than comfort and convenience.
- SR5: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds fog lights, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and an 8-inch touchscreen. If you want a more livable daily driver without jumping too far up the price ladder, this is the trim to target.
- TRD Sport: This trim adds 17-inch alloy wheels, a TRD-tuned sport suspension, push-button start, dual-zone automatic climate control, wireless device charging, and a 10-way power-adjustable driver’s seat. It makes sense if you want more comfort and a more upscale feel without going all the way to the luxury-oriented trims.
- TRD Off-Road: This is the trim to choose if trail use matters most. It adds all-terrain tires, Bilstein shocks, a locking rear differential, and trail-focused features that make it the most capable choice for rough terrain.
- Limited: This is the road-focused comfort trim, with leather upholstery, JBL premium audio, navigation, heated front seats, and a power moonroof. It suits you best if you want the most polished Tacoma experience.
- TRD Pro: This is the top choice if you want the most rugged version, with unique styling, underbody skid plates, LED fog lights, a TRD-tuned suspension, and a TRD sport exhaust. It is the one to buy if off-road character is your priority.
Toyota Safety Sense comes standard, while blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and rear parking sensors remain optional.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 Toyota Tacoma?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you stay disciplined.
- Deal availability: 30.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 6,247 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.56% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 80.9% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $32,039, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2022 Toyota Tacoma's resale value?
The current average of $33,411 sits slightly below last year's $34,288.
That softer pricing can help you buy more confidently now, but it also suggests the truck has already absorbed some of its recent market cooling. If you plan to sell later, the Tacoma’s reputation for durability and steady demand should help support value, especially if you keep mileage reasonable and maintain it well. The current price range also shows that buyers are still willing to pay for clean examples, which is a good sign for future resale.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.36/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2022 Toyota Tacoma safe?
The Toyota Tacoma earns a four-star overall rating from NHTSA, with four-star ratings in frontal crash and rollover, and five-star ratings in side crash tests.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
Toyota Safety Sense is standard and includes forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, automatic high beams, adaptive cruise control, and lane-departure warning. Blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and rear parking sensors are optional, so you should check whether a used truck has those features if they matter to you. The backup camera is standard, but the image is described as grainy, so you should be extra careful when backing up.
Should I buy a 2022 Toyota Tacoma or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2022 if:
- 30.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 80.9% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.56% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.36/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- It balances commuter-friendly use with off-road ability and easy-to-use tech.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $32,383, the 2021 costs less than the current year's $33,411 average.
- It offers more configuration variety and a broad trim lineup.
Consider the 2023 if:
- At $36,395, the 2023 costs more than the current year's $33,411 average.
- It leans harder into reliability and rugged appeal.
The bottom line: You should start with the 2022 if you want a Tacoma that still feels current enough, has strong owner satisfaction, and sits in a more favorable price zone than the next model year. If you are especially price-sensitive, the 2021 is the better value play, while the 2023 makes more sense only if you are willing to pay extra for a newer example.
