CarGurus Analysis: 2022 Mercedes-Benz S-Class
overall

Summary
With 171 currently listed for sale and an average price of $62,762, 24.6% of 2022 Mercedes-Benz S-Class listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2022 Mercedes-Benz S-Class 4.5 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it an 8.67 / 10.
99.4% of 2022 Mercedes-Benz S-Class listings on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2022 Mercedes-Benz S-Class is a full-size four-door luxury sedan that aims to define modern executive transportation. It stands out for its 48-volt mild hybrid gasoline-electric powertrain, which pairs with either a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder gas engine or a twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8, along with EQ Boost, a nine-speed automatic transmission, and all-wheel drive. That combination gives the car a distinctly upscale, high-tech character, while its stylish design, great ride quality, and premium interior materials reinforce its flagship mission.
For buyers, the appeal is straightforward: the 2022 Mercedes-Benz S-Class delivers a deeply luxurious experience with strong refinement and a cabin built to feel special. It also offers two powertrain choices, with the S500 starting at $111,100 and the S580 starting at $117,700. Fuel economy is respectable for a large luxury sedan in the S500, which is rated at up to 21 mpg city/30 mpg highway/24 mpg combined, while the S580 is rated at 16 mpg city/25 mpg highway/19 mpg combined. Its main drawbacks are equally clear, since the design may not appeal to everyone and the price is undeniably high.

The S Class provides safety and comfort for its riders. At first, I decided to purchase the BMW 745e after comparing it with the Audi A8. I decided to give the Mercedes S class a try. After the test drive, I immediately decided to purchase the Mercedes S580. I do not regret my purchase at all. All of the looks of the car look fabulous. The ambient lighting is breathtaking as well as the display screen. The panoramic sunroof is also one of my favorites. I live in a hilly area, but I can’t even tell when going up the hill since the S580 is a powerful vehicle.

It’s been a pinnacle of luxury, however nothing stands out compared to previous models except some businesses including indoor lighting etc. the screen seems odd ;stands out in the middle and does not merge with the rest of the dashboard

The only option I wish it had was the premier stereo system. Otherwise the car was perfect. It was basically a new vehicle. The price I actually paid was great based on the immaculate condition and very low mileage.

This car has a manufacturer recall on its fuel pump mechanism, and it is a hybrid car, so for someone who leaves the car parked in the garage for 2 straight weeks, it may cause the battery to die and may not be suited for my needs/lifestyle

How much does the 2022 Mercedes-Benz S-Class cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $61,862 |
| Year-Round Low | $61,862 |
| Year-Round High | $69,902 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $69,920 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −11.52% |
Prices have softened 11.52% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 1,117 listings available, which gives you a meaningful amount of inventory to compare.
Is the 2022 Mercedes-Benz S-Class a good car?
Yes — the 2022 Mercedes-Benz S-Class earns a 4.5/5 user rating and an 8.67/10 expert rating. The model scores 9/10 across Look and feel, Form and function, Technology, and Safety.
It is aimed at you if you want a full-size luxury sedan that feels like executive transportation, with a stylish design, great ride quality, and premium interior materials. The cabin and tech presentation are central to its appeal, and the car’s flagship mission comes through in the upscale materials and advanced features.
The main trade-offs are the potentially polarizing design and the high price tag. If you value refinement, luxury, and a deeply polished driving experience more than bargain pricing, this model fits that brief well.
33.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals, which suggests there are still some attractive opportunities if you shop carefully.
Is the 2022 Mercedes-Benz S-Class reliable?
Owners rate it 4.5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The 2022 S-Class is built around a 48-volt mild-hybrid setup, and the powertrain is described as seamless, quick, and well suited to both commuting and weekend driving. The expert review also emphasizes that the car handles smoothly, brakes confidently, and delivers the kind of refinement you expect from a flagship sedan.
Mercedes also frames the car as a highly refined executive sedan with strong overall excellence, which supports the case for long-term ownership confidence. The main used-buyer risk is cost: when a luxury flagship is this complex and expensive, repairs and upkeep can be more consequential than on a mainstream sedan.
What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Mercedes-Benz S-Class?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 87.4% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should start with the vehicle history report, then prioritize a thorough pre-purchase inspection so you can confirm the car’s condition and equipment. Pay close attention to signs of prior damage, wheel and tire condition, and whether the luxury features and driver-assistance systems work as intended.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The S500 and S580 both bring a high-end feature set, but the S500 starts at a lower price and is the better value if you want the flagship experience without stretching to the top end. The S580 adds the V8 and a higher starting price, so it suits you if you want more engine output and are willing to pay for it.
- Powertrain: You get a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six with EQ Boost in the S500 or a twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 with EQ Boost in the S580. Both use a nine-speed automatic and standard all-wheel drive, and both are tuned for smooth, quick, refined performance.
- Safety package: The car includes active distance assist Distronic adaptive cruise control with route-based speed adaptation, active stop-and-go assist, active steering assist with active emergency stop assist and active lane-change assistant, active brake assist with cross-traffic function and turn-off function, active speed limit assist with traffic sign assist, active blind-spot assist with exit warning, active lane-keeping assist, active parking assist with Parktronic, Pre-Safe Plus with Pre-Safe Sound, Pre-Safe Impulse Side, and car-to-x communication. Rear-passenger airbags and a rear-seat belt bag are available, so check whether the example you’re considering has the rear-seat protection you want.
- Infotainment: The cabin centers on a 12.8-inch OLED touchscreen with the latest MBUX system, paired with a 12.3-inch digital instrument panel. Wireless smartphone integration is not mentioned, but the car does offer augmented video for navigation, and an available augmented reality head-up display adds another layer of guidance.
- Fuel efficiency: The S500 is rated at up to 21 mpg city/30 mpg highway/24 mpg combined, while the S580 is rated at 16 mpg city/25 mpg highway/19 mpg combined.
Which 2022 Mercedes-Benz S-Class trim should I buy?
The 2022 Mercedes-Benz S-Class is offered in 5 trim levels: S500 4Matic Luxury Line, S500 4Matic AMG Line, S580 4Matic Luxury Line, S580 4Matic AMG Line, S580 4Matic Executive Line.
Here's the short version:
- S500 4Matic Luxury Line: This is the entry point to the lineup, and it gives you the core S-Class experience at the lowest starting price. It suits you if you want the flagship sedan’s comfort, tech, and refinement without paying for the more expensive V8 or appearance upgrades.
- S500 4Matic AMG Line: This version adds a sportier visual treatment and was the test vehicle’s trim, making it the best-value choice if you want a more distinctive look without moving up to the V8. It’s the trim to focus on if you want the strongest balance of price, equipment, and everyday luxury.
- S580 4Matic Luxury Line: This trim is for you if you want the V8 powertrain and the standard luxury presentation. It makes sense if performance matters more than value and you want the more powerful engine without extra appearance packaging.
- S580 4Matic AMG Line: This trim combines the V8 with the sportier AMG appearance treatment. Choose it if you want the stronger engine and a more aggressive look in one package.
- S580 4Matic Executive Line: This is the most upscale trim in the lineup and is the one to consider if you want the most premium rear-seat and executive-oriented presentation. It fits best if you plan to use the S-Class as a true chauffeur-style luxury sedan.
The safety content also notes available rear-passenger airbags and a rear-seat belt bag, so check whether those executive-focused features are included on the specific car you’re considering.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 Mercedes-Benz S-Class?
This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you’re patient and compare listings carefully.
- Deal availability: 33.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,117 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 11.52% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 87.4% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $61,862, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2022 Mercedes-Benz S-Class's resale value?
The current average of $61,862 sits slightly below last year's $69,920.
That decline suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy at a more favorable point in the cycle. For a future seller, that also means resale value may depend heavily on condition, mileage, and equipment rather than just model-year prestige.
Because the S-Class sits in the luxury flagship segment, buyers will still expect a well-kept example with strong presentation and complete features. If you maintain it carefully and keep the history clean, you should have a better chance of preserving demand when it’s time to sell.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

The car also includes Magic Vision Control, which is designed to meter windshield spray more precisely based on conditions. For rear-seat passengers, available rear-passenger airbags and a rear-seat belt bag add another layer of protection.
Should I buy a 2022 Mercedes-Benz S-Class or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2022 if:
- 33.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 87.4% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 11.52% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It combines a refined mild-hybrid powertrain with a flagship cabin and advanced driver assistance.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $57,649, the 2021 costs less than the current year's $61,862 average.
- It brings a major redesign with new powertrains and a more sophisticated infotainment system.
Consider the 2023 if:
- At $77,069, the 2023 costs more than the current year's $61,862 average.
- It adds a plug-in hybrid powertrain with electric-only driving capability.
The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price, luxury, and modern tech, the 2022 is the smart default. If your priority is saving money, the 2021 is the better value play. If you want the newer plug-in hybrid direction and can justify the higher cost, the 2023 is the upgrade path.
