Why it stands out
The 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5 stands out as Hyundai’s debut electric vehicle from its new sub-brand focused solely on battery electric-powered mobility. It is described as delivering on innovation, uniqueness, and approachability, and it pairs that identity with battery technology, smart car connectivity, advanced safety, and a design that is meant to feel distinctive rather than conventional.
For buyers, the appeal is in how much it offers at a price point that aims to reach a broad audience. The Ioniq 5 is noted for being spacious, technologically impressive, and equipped with standard advanced safety features. Its main drawbacks are also clear: the design may be polarizing, and its performance is described as fairly pedestrian. Even so, the overall package emphasizes value, modern features, and an easy-to-live-with electric-car experience.

There arent many crossover/SUV cars at this price point that arent Teslas. (Teslae?) Theres the Kia EV6, but in my experience comparably-equipped EV6s are priced higher. Theres the VW ID.4, but its reviews in head-to-head comparisons vs. the Ioniq 5 rate it lower in every category except handling - that includes charge time, range, cargo spaces, leg room, head room, etc. The Ioniq 5 seems to be the best entry in its class, and the styling slaps.

Test drive the Ioniq 5 Limited AWD. Above average acceleration . Handling is better than expected as taller vehicle benefits from low center of gravity due to battery location and weight as well as long wheel base and wide tire stance. Excellent materials with great fit and finish. Simplicity and minimalistic design yet extremely well equipped with safety and comfort features. Good value which would be even better but for greedy dealer surcharges/market adjustments which inflate purchase price.

I did my homework and the Ioniq5 won out over both the Tesla AWD option and the Subaru Solterra. Sleek, comfortable, and any feature imaginable! So, so happy!

What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5?
Accident-free inventory is excellent at 91.9% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.
You should still run a history report and prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re comparing cars with different charging habits or mileage. Focus on overall condition, battery health, and whether the car has been used mostly for home charging or frequent DC fast charging.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The cabin is intentionally low-key, with stain-resistant cloth on standard seats and leatherette reserved for higher trims. The top trim adds the massive moonroof and augmented-reality head-up display, while the mid-tier trim adds hands-free lane changing.
- Powertrain: Rear-wheel drive is standard, and all-wheel drive is available. The extended-range rear-drive setup uses a larger rear motor with 225 hp and 258 pound-feet of torque, while AWD swaps in a dual-motor system with 320 hp and 446 lb-ft of torque.
- Safety package: Hyundai SmartSense is standard and includes blind-spot monitoring, lane-departure warning, automatic high beams, and front- and rear-collision avoidance. Hyundai Highway Drive Assist I is also standard and adds machine-learning adaptive cruise control with stop & go.
- Infotainment: The Ioniq 5 uses dual 12.3-inch screens, plus wireless-style smartphone pairing, over-the-air updates, and a digital key. The displays are designed to be easy to read and are finished with an anti-glare coating.
- Range & charging: The extended-range rear-drive model offers 303 miles of range, while the AWD version drops to 256 miles. Fast charging can take the battery to 80 percent in 18 minutes, and a full charge can take about 6 hours and 43 minutes on slower charging.
- Battery health: Check battery state-of-health, confirm normal charging behavior, and ask how often the car has relied on DC fast charging versus home charging. Also verify how much of the battery warranty remains so you know what protection you still have.
Which 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5 trim should I buy?
The 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5 is offered in 3 trim levels: SE, SEL, and Limited.
Here's the short version:
- SE: This is the value play if you want the Ioniq 5’s core strengths without paying for extras. It still gives you the EV architecture, fast-charging capability, and standard safety tech, so it makes the most sense if you care most about price and everyday usability.
- SEL: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds more convenience and capability without jumping all the way to the top model. It’s the trim to target if you want a better-equipped cabin and more features while staying mindful of budget.
- Limited: Choose this if you want the most upscale version of the Ioniq 5, including the moonroof and augmented-reality head-up display. It’s the right pick if you want the fullest feature set and don’t mind paying for it.
Hyundai SmartSense and Highway Drive Assist I are standard across the lineup, so you don’t need to move up a trim just to get the core safety package.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find opportunities.
- Deal availability: 34.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 690 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 6.09% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 91.9% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $19,665, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5's resale value?
The current average of $22,545 sits slightly below last year's $24,007.
That softer pricing suggests the model has already moved through some of its early depreciation, which can help future sellers if demand stays steady. If you buy at the right price and keep the car in strong condition, you may be better positioned than someone who paid closer to the original market peak.
The current range also gives you a useful benchmark for timing your exit later. A well-kept Ioniq 5 with desirable equipment should remain easier to market than a less appealing EV, especially if buyers continue to value its mix of range, tech, and practicality.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.9/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5 safe?
The 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5 earns a 10/10 safety score from our experts.
Hyundai SmartSense is the standard driver-assistance suite, and it includes blind-spot monitoring, lane-departure warning, automatic high beams, and front- and rear-collision avoidance. Hyundai Highway Drive Assist I is also standard, bringing machine-learning adaptive cruise control with stop & go.
The Ioniq 5’s safety story is especially strong because those features come standard rather than being reserved for higher trims. The main caveat is that crash-test ratings had not yet been released in the source material, so you should still check for the latest results before buying.
Should I buy a 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5 or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2022 if:
- 34.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is excellent at 91.9% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 6.09% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.9/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2022 stands out as Hyundai’s debut EV from its dedicated electric sub-brand, with a strong emphasis on innovation, connectivity, and standard advanced safety.
The bottom line: The 2022 is a smart choice if you want the original Ioniq 5 experience at a softer used-car price, especially if you value its design, tech, and standard safety equipment. If you’re highly price-sensitive, you can also use the current market softness to shop patiently and target a well-priced example rather than stretching for a newer year.
