The Honda Accord is a leader among sedans, and the Accord Hybrid builds on the successful formula with solid fuel economy. The car rolls into 2022 relatively unchanged from the year before. The Accord Hybrid swaps in a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine and an electric motor that combine to produce 212 horsepower and 232 pound-feet of torque. An e-CVT, or continuously variable transmission, is also standard. Honda’s CVTs are tuned to avoid the annoying issues that generally come with the transmissions, which is a tendency to let the engine wail and drone under heavy throttle. The modest powertrain is more than adequate for in-town cruising, and Honda’s efforts to refine throttle response and braking have paid off. The car is smooth, and there’s none of the awkwardness that some hybrids exhibit during the handoff between electric and gas powertrain components. Fuel economy numbers are the main attraction for hybrids, but the Accord’s numbers are only decent compared to its rivals. It returns 48 mpg in the city, 47 on the highway, and 47 combined. The Accord Hybrid Sport and Touring trims deliver 44 mpg in the city, 41 mpg on the highway, and 43 mpg combined. Higher trims get larger 19-inch wheels that ding fuel economy. Looking at the competition, the Hyundai Sonata Hybrid returns up to 54 mpg on the highway, and the Camry Hybrid can hit 53 mpg on the highway. The Honda offers better passenger accommodations and is more engaging to drive than the other two, but it falls short on efficiency. An 8-inch touchscreen infotainment unit is standard, and Honda notes that it offers “knobs and hard keys for primary controls,” which is in response to the withering criticism the automaker received a few years ago when it removed the volume and tuning knobs. Other standard tech includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, USB inputs, and Bluetooth. Available features include SiriusXM, HD radio, wireless phone charging, premium audio systems, navigation, and a Wi-Fi hotspot. All Accords come standard with Honda Sensing safety equipment, which includes automatic emergency braking, road-departure mitigation, forward-collision warnings, lane-departure warnings, lane-keep assist, adaptive cruise control, traffic-sign recognition and automatic high beams. The Hybrid EX-L and Touring also get blind spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alerts, and the Touring adds a head-up display. The 2022 Honda Accord Hybrid is on sale now. It starts at $28,335, which includes a $1,015 destination charge. The Accord Hybrid Sport starts at $31,685, the EX-L at $34,655 and the Touring at $38,205.
