Used 2021 Volkswagen ID.4 for Sale nearChicago, IL

How much does the 2021 Volkswagen ID.4 cost?

Prices have softened 10.23% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.

There are 269 listings available, which gives you a modest pool of options to compare.

Is the 2021 Volkswagen ID.4 a good car?

Yes — owners rate it 4.7/5, and the expert rating is 7.33/10. The model scores 8/10 across Look and feel and Performance.

Owners consistently praise the quiet cabin, smooth driving experience, and spacious interior. The ID.4 also gets credit for its comfortable ride and approachable design, which fits well if you want a mainstream electric crossover rather than a niche EV.

The trade-offs are clear: the electric range is unimpressive, the technology is unintuitive, and visibility is poor. That means the ID.4 makes the most sense if you value comfort, calm road manners, and everyday usability more than cutting-edge interface design or maximum range.

Volkswagen positioned it as a nationwide electric crossover meant to compete with familiar family vehicles, and that framing fits the ownership experience well. Even so, the market still shows 44.2% good or great deals, so you have room to shop carefully.

Is the 2021 Volkswagen ID.4 reliable?

Owners rate it 4.7/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

Owner feedback points to a vehicle that feels reliable, dependable, and generally trouble-free in day-to-day use, with many drivers confident in its long-term appeal. The expert notes also emphasize that the ID.4’s electric setup delivers a familiar, easygoing driving experience, which can help reduce ownership stress if you’re new to EVs.

Volkswagen also includes a four-year, 50,000-mile limited warranty and an eight-year, 100,000-mile battery warranty, which helps reduce early ownership risk. For used buyers, the main long-term concern is making sure the battery and charging behavior still look healthy, especially if the car has seen frequent fast charging or cold-weather use.

What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Volkswagen ID.4?

Accident-free inventory is solid at 86.6% — always verify the vehicle history report.

You should still check the history report carefully, because even a strong accident-free rate doesn’t replace a clean record on the specific car you’re considering. Prioritize a pre-purchase inspection that focuses on battery condition, charging performance, and any signs of wear in the cabin electronics. Since owner feedback mentions backup camera reliability and battery drainage concerns in colder conditions, it’s smart to test those systems directly.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base Pro trim starts with cloth seats and a leather-wrapped steering wheel, while the Pro S and 1st Edition add leatherette upholstery. The higher trims are the better fit if you want a more upscale cabin without moving away from the ID.4’s core formula.
• Powertrain: The ID.4 launched with a single rear-mounted electric motor making 201 horsepower and 229 pound-feet of torque, and an AWD version later added a second motor for 295 horsepower and 339 pound-feet of torque. The rear-drive setup is the more efficient-feeling choice, while AWD adds stronger acceleration and traction.
• Safety package: Standard driver aids include forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, lane-keep assist, park distance control, automatic high beams, adaptive cruise control, Travel Assist, and Emergency Assist. Travel Assist is standard, so you don’t need to step up to a higher trim for that feature.
• Infotainment: The standard setup uses a 10-inch touchscreen, with a 12-inch screen optional, plus wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. It also includes a 5.3-inch instrument display and over-the-air capability is not stated here.
• Range & charging: The RWD Pro S and 1st Edition have an EPA-estimated range of 250 miles, the base RWD Pro reaches 260 miles, AWD Pro S trims do 240 miles, and AWD Pro trims do 249 miles. Standard DC fast charging takes the battery from 5% to 80% in 38 minutes, and the battery pack is covered by an eight-year, 100,000-mile warranty.
• Battery health: For a used EV, ask for charging history, check whether the car has been mostly home charged or frequently DC fast charged, and review battery state-of-health if the seller can provide it. You want to confirm the battery still supports the range you expect and that enough warranty coverage remains for peace of mind.

Which 2021 Volkswagen ID.4 trim should I buy?

The 2021 Volkswagen ID.4 is offered in 4 trim levels: Pro, Pro S, AWD Pro, AWD Pro S.

Here's the short version:

• Pro: This is the entry point, and it gives you the ID.4’s core EV experience at the lowest starting price. It’s the trim to consider if you want the most affordable way into the model and are comfortable with the simpler cabin materials.
• Pro S: This is the best-value choice for most shoppers because it adds a more upscale interior with leatherette upholstery while keeping the ID.4’s standard safety and tech features. If you want the most balanced mix of comfort and equipment, this is the trim to target.
• AWD Pro: Choose this if you want the added traction and stronger output from the dual-motor setup, especially if you drive in poor weather or want quicker acceleration. It’s the right pick if performance and all-weather confidence matter more than maximizing efficiency.
• AWD Pro S: This is the most fully equipped version in the lineup, combining the upgraded cabin with AWD power. It makes sense if you want the most premium-feeling ID.4 and are willing to pay for it.

Travel Assist and Emergency Assist are standard, so you don’t need to move up the lineup to get Volkswagen’s core safety-assist package.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Volkswagen ID.4?

This looks like a buyer-friendly moment, with softer pricing and a decent amount of inventory to compare.

• Deal availability: 44.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 269 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 10.23% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 86.6% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $17,889, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2021 Volkswagen ID.4's resale value?

The current average of $18,807 sits slightly below last year's $20,951.

That decline suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can be good news if you’re buying now but less favorable if you’re planning to sell soon. A softer price environment usually means future resale gains may be limited unless demand strengthens or supply tightens.

For a seller, the upside is that the ID.4 still has broad appeal as a mainstream electric crossover with standard safety tech and a comfortable cabin. That helps support demand, even if the current pricing trend points to a more competitive resale market.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.7/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2021 Volkswagen ID.4 safe?

The 2021 Volkswagen ID.4 earns the IIHS’s Top Safety Pick+ designation and five-star ratings from NHTSA in its crash tests.

It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.

The standard driver-assistance suite includes forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, lane-keep assist, park distance control, automatic high beams, adaptive cruise control, Travel Assist, and Emergency Assist. Travel Assist adds automated lane centering, and Emergency Assist can bring the car to a stop if it detects the driver is incapacitated.

The main caveat is that the NHTSA testing cited here applies to the rear-wheel-drive version, not the AWD model. Even so, the ID.4’s standard safety equipment is a strong point, and the expert review notes that Travel Assist performed well and followed curves smoothly.

Should I buy a 2021 Volkswagen ID.4 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2021 if:

• 44.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Accident-free inventory is solid at 86.6% — always verify the vehicle history report.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 10.23% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.7/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2021 model is notable as Volkswagen’s first mainstream EV crossover, with nationwide availability and standard advanced safety features.

The bottom line: The 2021 ID.4 is a smart choice if you want a comfortable, quiet electric crossover with broad availability and strong safety equipment. If you’re especially price-sensitive, the current market makes this a good year to shop, but you should still compare trims carefully and prioritize a clean history and healthy battery condition before buying.
