In recent years, though, it’s faced stronger competition from the Chevrolet Colorado/GMC Canyon twins, the Ford Ranger, and the Jeep Gladiator. A redesigned Nissan Frontier and heavily-updated Honda Ridgeline are also on the way.
Meanwhile, the Tacoma enters the 2021 model year largely unchanged. The only updates are two new special editions—the Nightshade Edition and Trail Special Edition—and standard dual-zone automatic climate control on all V6 models.
Pickup truck buyers tend to want choices, and Toyota delivers. The Tacoma is available with four-cylinder and six-cylinder engines, Access Cab and four-door Double Cab body styles, rear-wheel drive (RWD) or four-wheel drive (4WD), and six trim levels— SR, SR5, TRD Off Road, TRD Sport, Limited, and TRD Pro—plus the two special editions.
Our test vehicle was a Tacoma TRD Pro Double Cab. The TRD Pro is the most off-road focused of the Tacoma models, so naturally, it gets standard 4WD drive. While Toyota does offer a more comfort-oriented Tacoma Limited model, the TRD Pro is also positioned at the top of the lineup.

(37 reviews)This is my first truck, and I wanted to stick with Toyota because of the engine’s longevity track record and the Toyota Tacoma’s high resale value retention. The SR package I got doesn’t have a lot of fancy bells and whistles but the exact stuff that my family needs - 5 seats with 4 doors, adaptive cruise control, power windows, hauling and towing capabilities.
Great vehicle impressive amenities and great value for the price. Will buy nothing but Toyota.
Great features and accessories! The automatic adjustment of the driver’s seat is a big improvement!
It seems to me to be an all-around great vehicle. Great for trransporting up to 5 people, great for hauling, comfortable for traveling and great looking! Plus extraordinary reliability and longevity! Gas mileage is a bit anemic. Bring on the Tacoma Hybrid! I love this vehicle!
I went with the TRD Off-Road trim and I love it! Couldn’t be happier with a vehicle! It runs great, power seat on the drivers side, touch screen display and push button start. Can’t ask for much more especially with a truck under 40k!
