CarGurus Analysis: 2021 Tesla Model X

Summary
With 514 currently listed for sale and an average price of $38,159, 30.4% of 2021 Tesla Model Xs for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2021 Tesla Model X 4.67 / 5 stars.
85.8% of 2021 Model X models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2021 Tesla Model X stands out as a large, all-electric SUV that was designed to carry families without giving up Tesla’s performance and tech focus. It is based on the same platform as the Tesla Model S and shares about 30% of its content with that sedan, but it adds two- and three-row seating for up to seven passengers. Its most distinctive feature is the double-hinged Falcon Wing rear doors, which open upward instead of outward, giving the Model X a look and personality that few SUVs can match.
For 2021, the Model X received a major overhaul. The interior was redesigned and the entire powertrain was updated, while the exterior change was limited to a new front bumper. That year also brought the Model X Plaid, a tri-motor version aimed at even quicker acceleration and better efficiency. The cabin gained a landscape-format center screen, better materials, a revised center console, a yoke steering wheel, and a rear-seat entertainment screen, along with updated Autopilot hardware and a faster infotainment system. Standard equipment was generous, including all-wheel drive, heated front and rear seats, a heated steering wheel, adaptive suspension, a premium 17-speaker audio system, navigation, Wi-Fi connectivity, Bluetooth phone pairing, and automatic front doors.
The 2021 Model X also had some clear drawbacks. It did not offer Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, and the third row was cramped. The Falcon Wing doors can also be tricky in tight spaces. Even so, the Model X remained appealing for buyers who wanted a roomy electric SUV with strong range, advanced technology, and standout design.

Features were awesome, if only it came with all the extra perks that Tesla offer that we are charge a fee for. The only thing the car is missing is a better rim package, the black rims.

My favorite car in the world, Ive owned two model x vehicles. Pros in order... Safest vehicle around, autopilot features, faster than almost any car in the world, range, the enormous windshield, cool doors, interior space.

Absolutely amazing! The tech, the power, the handling, the comfort is all amazing. If I had to list one thing to be improved upon, its that there is a little wind noise at the upper front left and right window posts at speed.

Is the 2021 Tesla Model X a good car?
Yes — the 2021 Tesla Model X is a good car if you want a large electric SUV that prioritizes family space, performance, and technology. It was designed to carry up to seven passengers, and its 2021 overhaul brought a redesigned interior, an updated powertrain, a faster infotainment system, and a more modern cabin layout. It also stands out for its Falcon Wing rear doors and generous standard equipment, including all-wheel drive, heated seats, adaptive suspension, navigation, Wi-Fi connectivity, Bluetooth phone pairing, and automatic front doors.
The tradeoffs are just as clear: you do not get Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, the third row is cramped, and the Falcon Wing doors can be awkward in tight spaces. Even so, if you want a roomy EV with strong range, advanced tech, and a distinctive design, it fits that brief well. Market availability is still selective, with 31.0% of listings marked as good or great deals.
Is the 2021 Tesla Model X reliable?
Owners rate it 4.67/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The 2021 Model X’s overview points to a vehicle built around advanced technology, a major powertrain update, and a redesigned interior, which suggests a more mature setup than earlier versions. At the same time, its complexity and unique features mean you should pay close attention to how well the vehicle has been maintained and whether all systems operate as intended.
For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is that a highly complex EV with distinctive hardware can be more expensive to sort out if prior care was inconsistent.
What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Tesla Model X?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 86% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should prioritize a history report first, then focus your inspection on body condition, door operation, and signs that the cabin and tech features work properly. Because the Model X has unique hardware and a heavily updated 2021 design, condition matters more than usual, especially on a used example with a lot of electronic and mechanical complexity.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Tesla Model X?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully without expecting every listing to be a standout bargain.
- Deal availability: 31.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 520 listings available.
- Clean inventory: 86.0% of listings are accident-free.
Should I buy a 2021 Tesla Model X or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2021 if:
- 31.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 86% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Owners rate it 4.67/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
The bottom line: The 2021 Model X is the better choice if you want the updated interior, revised powertrain, and more modern tech package that came with the overhaul.
