Is the 2021 Lexus RX a good car?

Yes — the 2021 Lexus RX earns a 4.92/5 user rating and a 7.83/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Cost effectiveness at 9/10.

Owners consistently praise its reliability, luxurious features, and smooth driving experience, and they also call out its comfort and handling. That lines up with the RX’s use case as a midsize luxury SUV that feels easy to live with, especially if you want comfort and refinement over flash. The main trade-offs are fairly pedestrian performance and technology that can feel unintuitive.

With 36.8% of listings priced as good or great deals, you still have room to shop selectively.

Is the 2021 Lexus RX reliable?

Owners rate it 4.92/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

The owner feedback repeatedly points to reliability, and the expert evaluation also emphasizes Lexus’ tradition of reliability. That dependability theme is reinforced by the RX’s reputation for being comfortable and easy to live with over time. The RX also comes across as a model you can count on for relaxed daily use rather than constant attention.

Lexus includes a maintenance-friendly ownership experience in the broader value proposition, and the RX’s strong satisfaction score suggests fewer surprises for used buyers. For long-term ownership, your biggest risk is buying a poorly maintained example, so service records matter.

What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Lexus RX?

At 73.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and confirm whether any prior damage affected the body, structure, or safety systems. A pre-purchase inspection should focus on the condition of the brakes, electronics, and interior controls, since the RX’s technology can be a weak point for some shoppers. You should also pay close attention to how the vehicle drives, because comfort is a major strength and any suspension or steering issues would stand out quickly.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The RX lineup includes the RX, RX F Sport, RXL, RX Hybrid, and RXL Hybrid. The base RX and RX Hybrid are the entry points in their respective powertrain families, while the RXL and RXL Hybrid add an extended body and a third row of seating. The RX F Sport is the most performance-focused version, and the base RX’s standard equipment includes NuLuxe-trimmed seats, power-adjustable front seats, a reclining second row, and a power tilt/telescoping steering wheel.
• Powertrain: The RX, RXL, and RX F-Sport use a 3.5-liter V6 with 295 horsepower and 267 pound-feet of torque paired with an eight-speed automatic. The RX Hybrid and RXL Hybrid use a 3.5-liter V6 with three electric motors and an e-CVT, with 308 hp and standard AWD. The front-wheel-drive RX 350 is the most fuel-efficient gas version at 20 mpg city, 27 mpg highway, and 23 mpg combined.
• Safety package: Lexus Safety System+ 2.0 is standard and includes pre-collision warning with automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, cyclist detection, automatic high beams, adaptive cruise control, lane-departure warning with steering assist, lane-keep assist, lane-trace assist, and road sign assist. Every RX also includes a rearview camera, 10 airbags, enhanced vehicle stability control, and blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert.
• Infotainment: Standard tech includes an 8-inch infotainment touchscreen, voice recognition, Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Amazon Alexa, satellite radio, HD Radio, a WiFi hot spot, six USB ports, and a nine-speaker sound system. A 12.3-inch screen, navigation, wireless charging, and upgraded audio systems are available, but wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are not offered.
• Fuel efficiency: The gas RX 350 returns 20 mpg city, 27 mpg highway, and 23 mpg combined in front-wheel-drive form, while AWD or the RXL lowers combined efficiency by 1 mpg. The RXL with AWD gets 21 mpg combined. The hybrid models are rated at 29 or 31 mpg city and 28 mpg highway, depending on configuration.

Which 2021 Lexus RX trim should I buy?

The 2021 Lexus RX is offered in 5 trim levels: RX, RX F Sport, RXL, RX Hybrid, and RXL Hybrid.

Here's the short version:

• RX: This is the best starting point if you want the core RX experience with the strongest value proposition. You still get the comfort, standard safety tech, and everyday luxury features that define the model, making it the trim most buyers should consider first.
• RX F Sport: Choose this if you want the most driver-focused version of the RX. It adds a more aggressive appearance and sport-oriented hardware, but the RX still prioritizes comfort over outright performance.
• RXL: Pick this if you need the extended body and third row. It gives you more passenger flexibility, though the added size is best for buyers who truly need the extra seating.
• RX Hybrid: This is the efficiency-minded choice if you want the RX formula with better fuel economy. It keeps the luxury feel while adding hybrid power and standard AWD.
• RXL Hybrid: Choose this if you want the third row and the hybrid powertrain together. It makes the most sense for buyers who need space and want the efficiency advantage.

The standard safety suite is a strong part of the RX’s appeal, but the longer RXL and RXL Hybrid have not been tested by IIHS.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Lexus RX?

The market looks moderate and selective buyers should have room to compare listings carefully.

• Deal availability: 36.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,498 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 2.31% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 73.4% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $35,280, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2021 Lexus RX's resale value?

The current average of $35,416 sits slightly below last year's $36,254.

That tells you the RX has softened a bit, which can help you as a buyer now but may temper what you recover later as a seller. The current pricing trend suggests the market is not overheating, so resale gains are more likely to come from buying well and keeping the vehicle in strong condition. A clean history and strong maintenance record should matter more than ever if you want to protect future value.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.92/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2021 Lexus RX safe?

The 2021 Lexus RX earns a Top Safety Pick designation from IIHS and four-star ratings overall from NHTSA, with five-star ratings in side-impact crashworthiness.

It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

Lexus Safety System+ 2.0 is standard, and it includes pre-collision warning with automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, cyclist detection, automatic high beams, adaptive cruise control, lane-departure warning with steering assist, lane-keep assist, lane-trace assist, and road sign assist. Every RX also comes with a rearview camera, 10 airbags, enhanced vehicle stability control, and blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert.

One caveat is that the longer RXL and RXL Hybrid have not been tested by IIHS, so you should be especially careful if you’re shopping those versions.

Should I buy a 2021 Lexus RX or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2021 if:

• 36.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 73.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 2.31% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.92/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2021 brings new standard safety systems and keeps the RX’s comfort-focused, easy-to-live-with character.

Consider the 2020 if:

• At $32,897, the 2020 costs less than the current year's $35,416 average.
• It emphasizes comfort, refinement, and a quiet cabin.

Consider the 2022 if:

• At $38,644, the 2022 costs more than the current year's $35,416 average.
• It adds new colors and a standalone fog lamps option.

The bottom line: If you want the best balance of comfort, safety, and current-market pricing, the 2021 is the smart default. If your budget is tighter, the 2020 is the better value play, while the 2022 makes sense only if you specifically want the newer-year premium and are comfortable paying more.
