Why it stands out
The 2021 BMW 5 Series stands out as a midsize luxury sedan that blends sportier-than-average driving dynamics with the tech and luxury features expected in its class. BMW’s current generation arrived for the 2017 model year, and the 2021 model gets a midcycle refresh with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system, a bigger infotainment touchscreen, and subtle styling changes. That combination helps the car feel modern without abandoning the balanced character that made earlier 5 Series models so well regarded.
It also appeals to buyers with multiple powertrain options, great ride quality, and impressive technology. At the same time, it is not aimed squarely at hardcore enthusiasts, and advanced safety features are not standard. For shoppers who want a refined luxury sedan with strong everyday appeal, the 2021 BMW 5 Series offers a compelling mix of comfort, performance, and equipment.

I like everything about the car except the feature that kills the engine when stopped. I realize that this is not a problem in Sport Mode, but Sport Mode is a little too jumpy in this 540i. I run my 540d in Sport mode exclusively and it’s torque curve is perfect. The 540d has better power at all speeds.

Excellent Car, Real Rocket with 550 trim or M5 variants. Great for a long trip and if you are in a state that dont require the UGLY front license plate it shows how elegant the lines are. I LOVE mine.

How much does the 2021 BMW 5 Series cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $28,705 |
| Year-Round Low | $28,613.64 |
| Year-Round High | $31,752.55 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $31,593 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −9.14% |
Prices have softened 9.14% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 796 listings available, which gives you a decent amount of inventory to compare before you buy.
If you find a listing below $28,613.64, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2021 BMW 5 Series a good car?
Yes — the 2021 BMW 5 Series earns a 5/5 user rating and an 8/10 expert rating. The model scores 9/10 across Technology and Safety.
Owners consistently praise its powerful performance, luxurious comfort, and refined interior, and they also like the aesthetic details and handling. The trade-offs are that some drivers find the engine auto-off behavior annoying, and the Sport Mode can feel jumpy at times.
For you, that means this is a strong fit if you want a midsize luxury sedan that feels polished and upscale without giving up everyday drivability. It also lines up well with shoppers who want a refined cabin and a broad mix of powertrain choices.
With 32.9% of listings marked as good or great deals, there’s enough market softness to make comparison shopping worthwhile.
Is the 2021 BMW 5 Series reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback points to a car that feels dependable, with praise centered on its refined character and the kind of ownership experience people are happy to live with over time. The expert review also emphasizes BMW’s smooth operation and sophisticated driver-assist tech, which supports the impression of a well-sorted luxury sedan.
BMW also notes that the standard warranty covers four years or 50,000 miles, with four years of free roadside assistance. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is that luxury-car upkeep can still be expensive if the car was poorly maintained or heavily optioned.
What should I look for when buying a used 2021 BMW 5 Series?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 76.9% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still check the history report carefully, because a clean listing percentage does not replace a proper records review. Prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially on cars with higher mileage or more complex option packages. Focus on condition, maintenance history, and whether the car’s equipment works as expected.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: Lower trims use standard SensaTec upholstery rather than real leather, while Dakota leather and Nappa leather are available at extra cost. The cabin design is restrained and understated, so the trim you choose matters if you want a more upscale feel.
- Powertrain: The lineup includes a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder in the 530i, a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system in the 540i, and a plug-in hybrid 530e with an electric motor. The 540i’s mild-hybrid setup supports accessories and start-stop operation, but it cannot drive solely on electric power.
- Safety package: Standard safety features include lane-departure warning, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, and automatic high beams. The Driving Assistance Plus Package adds adaptive cruise control, traffic-jam assist, lane-keep assist, and emergency stop assist.
- Infotainment: You get a standard 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto compatibility, Bluetooth, SiriusXM 360L satellite radio, and a built-in WiFi hotspot. Voice control and gesture controls are also available.
- Fuel efficiency: The 540i is rated at 26 mpg combined, 23 mpg city, and 31 mpg highway.
Which 2021 BMW 5 Series trim should I buy?
The 2021 BMW 5 Series is offered in 3 trim levels: 530i, 540i, 530e.
Here's the short version:
- 530i: This is the entry point, and it gives you the 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder, rear-wheel drive, and the core luxury-tech experience at the lowest starting price. It makes the most sense if you want the 5 Series badge and comfort without stretching for extra power.
- 540i: This is the best-value choice if you want the strongest all-around balance. You get the 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six, the 48-volt mild-hybrid system, and notably quicker acceleration, while still keeping the refined ride and upscale feel that define the car.
- 530e: Choose this if you want plug-in hybrid capability and the ability to drive solely on electric power for significant distances. It suits you best if short trips and efficiency matter more than outright performance.
The Driving Assistance Plus Package adds adaptive cruise control, traffic-jam assist, lane-keep assist, and emergency stop assist, so it’s worth considering if you want the most complete safety setup.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 BMW 5 Series?
This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find opportunities.
- Deal availability: 32.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 796 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 9.14% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 76.9% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $28,613.64, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2021 BMW 5 Series's resale value?
The current average of $28,705 sits slightly below last year's $31,593.
That price movement suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy more confidently now. If you plan to sell later, the softer current pricing means your upside is more limited unless you buy well and keep the car in excellent condition. Strong equipment, clean history, and careful maintenance will matter more when it’s time to resell.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2021 BMW 5 Series safe?
The 2020 model received a Top Safety Pick+ award from IIHS, with top “good” scores in all crash tests and front-crash prevention tests. The standard headlights were rated “marginal,” while optional lights received a “good” rating.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
Standard safety features include lane-departure warning, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, and automatic high beams. The Driving Assistance Plus Package adds adaptive cruise control, traffic-jam assist, lane-keep assist, and emergency stop assist, which can help pull the car onto the shoulder if the driver is incapacitated.
The main caveat is that advanced safety features are not standard across the lineup, so you may need to check the option sheet carefully if driver assistance matters to you.
Should I buy a 2021 BMW 5 Series or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2021 if:
- 32.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 76.9% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 9.14% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2021 model adds a midcycle refresh with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system, a bigger infotainment touchscreen, and subtle styling updates.
The bottom line: The 2021 is the right pick if you want the refreshed version with stronger tech and a more modern feel, especially if you value the updated infotainment and mild-hybrid powertrain. If you’re more price-sensitive, a nearby model year can still make sense, but the 2021’s combination of softened pricing, strong owner satisfaction, and updated equipment makes it the cleaner all-around choice for most shoppers.
