Used 2020 Volkswagen Tiguan for Sale near Connecticut

How much does the 2020 Volkswagen Tiguan cost?

Prices have softened 12.18% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.

There are 2,532 listings available, which gives you a solid pool of options to compare.

Is the 2020 Volkswagen Tiguan a good car?

Yes — it earns a 4.89/5 user rating and a 7.67/10 expert rating.

The model scores 9/10 across Form and function and Technology.

Owners consistently praise its roomy interior, value, and quality, and they also like the smooth, easygoing driving feel. The Tiguan’s three-row layout and practical packaging make it especially appealing if you want compact-crossover size without giving up extra seating. The main trade-off is handling, which is a weak point, so it fits you best if practicality matters more than sharp driving dynamics.

With 35.6% of listings marked as good or great deals, there’s still meaningful value in the market.

Is the 2020 Volkswagen Tiguan reliable?

Owners rate it 4.89/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

The owner feedback points to a dependable, trouble-free ownership experience, with repeated praise for quality and everyday usability. The expert evaluation also emphasizes the Tiguan’s solid, easygoing nature and its quiet, refined highway manners, which supports the impression that it’s built for steady long-term use. Volkswagen also includes five years of complimentary Car-Net features, which adds convenience for ownership.

For used buyers, the main long-term risk is making sure the vehicle has been maintained well, since a larger, heavier crossover can be more sensitive to neglected wear items.

What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Volkswagen Tiguan?

At 70.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a careful inspection of bodywork, alignment, and signs of prior repair. Because this model’s appeal depends heavily on space, comfort, and technology, you should also pay close attention to cabin condition, electronics, and whether the features you want are actually present on the trim you’re considering.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base S trim is the most stripped-down version, while the SE adds leatherette upholstery, heated front seats, automatic climate control, and the much more desirable 8-inch touchscreen. The SE trim is the value leader, while the SEL and SEL Premium R-Line bring more luxury and safety equipment.
• Powertrain: Every Tiguan uses a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder with 184 horsepower and 221 pound-feet of torque, paired with an eight-speed automatic. Front-wheel drive is standard, and all-wheel drive is available.
• Safety package: All models include forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking, blind spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert. Adaptive cruise control with lane-keeping assistance and LED headlights with automatic high beams are reserved for the top SEL trim.
• Infotainment: The base S trim uses a 6.5-inch touchscreen, while SE and higher trims get an 8-inch capacitive touchscreen. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard, along with Bluetooth and a WiFi hotspot. Digital Cockpit is available on top SEL trims.
• Fuel efficiency: A front-drive Tiguan earns 25 miles per gallon combined, while the all-wheel-drive version is rated at 23 mpg combined. Highway numbers do not crack 30 mpg for either version.

Which 2020 Volkswagen Tiguan trim should I buy?

The 2020 Volkswagen Tiguan is offered in 5 trim levels: S, SE, SE R-Line Black, SEL, SEL Premium R-Line.

Here's the short version:

• S: This is the entry point, but it gives up too much equipment for many shoppers. If you want the Tiguan’s space and third-row practicality at the lowest price, it gets you there, but the cabin and tech are more basic than the higher trims.
• SE: This is the best-value trim. It adds leatherette upholstery, heated front seats, automatic climate control, and the 8-inch touchscreen, making it the sweet spot for most buyers.
• SE R-Line Black: This trim mostly adds cosmetic upgrades like alloy wheels and R-Line badging, so it makes sense mainly if you want the sportier appearance.
• SEL: This is the trim to choose if you want more luxury and safety equipment, including adaptive cruise control with lane-keeping assist.
• SEL Premium R-Line: This is the top-end choice with all-wheel drive and the most upscale equipment, but it comes at a steep price.

The safety package is strongest on the SEL trim and above, while the base trims miss out on some of the advanced driver-assistance features.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Volkswagen Tiguan?

This is a moderate market for selective buyers, with enough inventory and pricing softness to make comparison shopping worthwhile.

• Deal availability: 35.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 2,532 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 12.18% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 70.7% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $15,597, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2020 Volkswagen Tiguan's resale value?

The current average of $15,597 sits slightly below last year's $17,760.

That decline suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you as a buyer today but may limit upside if you plan to resell soon. For a future seller, the key is to buy well and keep the vehicle in strong condition, because a lower entry price can help cushion depreciation. The Tiguan’s practical appeal and strong owner satisfaction should help support demand over time.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.89/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2020 Volkswagen Tiguan safe?

The Tiguan earns a Top Safety Pick rating from IIHS on SEL Premium models with LED headlights.

It earns a 6/10 safety score from our experts.

Volkswagen made forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking, blind spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert standard on all models. Adaptive cruise control with lane-keeping assistance and LED headlights with automatic high beams are reserved for the top SEL trim, so lower trims miss out on some of the most desirable safety tech. The IIHS result also comes with an important caveat: most Tiguans use halogen headlights, which IIHS rates poor.

Should I buy a 2020 Volkswagen Tiguan or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2020 if:

• 35.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 70.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 12.18% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.89/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It stands out for three-row seating in a compact crossover, with roomy packaging and straightforward technology.

Consider the 2021 if:

• At $17,030, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $15,597 average.
• It adds a more modern infotainment update and broader everyday family appeal.

The bottom line: If you want the better value today, the 2020 is the stronger buy because pricing has softened and the model still delivers the space and practicality that make it appealing. If you’re willing to pay more for a newer version, the 2021 is the better path for buyers who want the next-year update and don’t mind the higher price.
