CarGurus Analysis: 2020 Toyota 4Runner
overall

Summary
With 2,347 currently listed for sale and an average price of $35,848.00, 32.9% of 2020 Toyota 4Runners for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2020 Toyota 4Runner 4.85 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 6.83 / 10.
69.0% of 2020 4Runner models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2020 Toyota 4Runner stands out as a vehicle built around a clear purpose rather than broad compromise. It feels most at home when the road gets rough, whether that means a dusty cow path or a snowy mountain road, and it is especially appealing to buyers who want a rugged SUV that can handle terrain outside the typical car’s comfort zone. Even in Limited trim, it still leans into that mission, with enough chrome and leather to present itself as a rough-and-tumble luxury alternative.
That focus comes with tradeoffs. The 2020 Toyota 4Runner’s strengths include standard advanced safety features, a powerful engine, and off-road capability, but it is also described as poor value for money, with poor fuel economy and interior materials that feel cheap. For shoppers who truly need four-wheel drive and prioritize durability and capability over refinement, those compromises may be easier to accept.

Love the color and the ability to do anything in this bad boy. Drives off road super smooth and easy, drives on paced road as smooth as the SR5. This is the perfect vehicle.

The perfect dinosaur for me! I chose this make and model specifically for its older tech and build quality. Is it fast, no. Does it sip gas, nope. Does it feel solid, yes. This is my second one. The first is still running great at 20 years old. My only gripe is the type of OEM step bars. Easy to get in, but not the best for getting out of the vehicle. They will be swapped. Problem solved. This is a popular platform but it isn't the right vehicle for everyone. If you are considering a 4Runner, watch the Care Care Nut's review of the 5th gen 4Runners FIRST. Know what you are buying. I have had a Lexus and 2 different 4 Runners. These are the best vehicles I have ever owned and that’s comparing them to Volvo, Dodge, Jeep, and BMW. The only thing I have a problem with is gas mileage but that’s what you get when you have 4 wheel drive. It would be nice if it had the push button lift for the tail gate but no big deal. They are awesome vehicles. I am on my 4th Toyota/Lexus brand.

This 2020 4 Runner is a great choice. I have a very active lifestyle. I surf, snowboard, cycle and take my two dogs almost everywhere I go. So this vehicle is perfect for what I need. The SR5 Premium model has just enough nice features that it feels like your driving a luxury car minus the high price tag. If you are looking for a true goat of a truck I recommend this vehicle.

| Year-Round Low | $33,524.39 |
| Year-Round High | $36,217.37 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $36,216 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −0.93% |
Prices have held steady compared to this time last year, signaling a stable and predictable market for this model year.
There are 2,356 listings available, which suggests a healthy amount of inventory for you to compare. If you find a listing below $33,524.39, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2020 Toyota 4Runner a good car?
Yes — the 2020 Toyota 4Runner earns a 4.85/5 user rating and a 6.83/10 expert rating. The model scores 8/10 across Performance and Form and function.
Owners consistently praise its ruggedness, reliability, and value retention, and they also highlight comfort, safety features, and off-road capability. The 4Runner’s purpose-built character fits you best if you want a rugged SUV that can handle rough terrain and still serve as a practical four-door. The main trade-offs are poor value for money, poor fuel economy, and interior materials that feel cheap. Even so, the market shows 27.9% of listings as good or great deals, which gives you some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2020 Toyota 4Runner reliable?
Owners rate it 4.85/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
User feedback points to reliability, durability, and a vehicle you can count on over time, with owners also calling out its ruggedness and value retention. The expert evaluation reinforces that dependability by describing the V6 as having longevity that supports the 4Runner’s reliability. Toyota also includes a standard first-line safety and convenience package that helps reduce day-to-day ownership stress. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is that a tough, older-style SUV can hide wear if it has been used hard off-road or neglected on maintenance.
What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Toyota 4Runner?
At 69.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the truck has seen trail use or winter duty. Focus on body condition, underbody wear, and signs of hard use, since this model’s appeal often comes from capability rather than gentle commuting. If you are comparing multiple listings, give extra weight to maintenance records and evidence that the SUV has been cared for consistently.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The lineup includes SR5, SR5 Premium, TRD Off-Road, TRD Off-Road Premium, TRD Pro, Limited, Nightshade Special Edition, and Venture Special Edition. Lower trims come with cloth upholstery, while the SR5 Premium and TRD Off-Road Premium add SofTex material; the Limited leans into comfort with leather and chrome, while the Venture adds 17-inch TRD wheels and a standard Yakima Megawarrior roof rack.
- Powertrain: Every trim uses a 4.0-liter V6 with a 5-speed automatic, rated at 270 horsepower and 278 pound-feet of torque. It is built for durability and off-road use more than smoothness or efficiency, and it can tow up to 5,000 pounds.
- Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense P is standard and includes adaptive cruise control, lane-departure alert, a pre-collision system with pedestrian detection, and automatic high beams. The 4Runner also comes with eight standard airbags.
- Infotainment: You get an 8-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, plus Bluetooth connectivity. Higher trims add features like a JBL stereo and navigation.
- Fuel efficiency: The EPA estimates 16 mpg city, 19 highway, and 17 combined.
Which 2020 Toyota 4Runner trim should I buy?
The 2020 Toyota 4Runner is offered in 8 trim levels: SR5, SR5 Premium, TRD Off-Road, TRD Off-Road Premium, TRD Pro, Limited, Nightshade Special Edition, and Venture Special Edition.
Here's the short version:
- SR5: This is the entry point if you want the 4Runner’s core ruggedness, standard safety tech, and V6 power without paying for extra comfort or appearance upgrades.
- SR5 Premium: This is the better value if you want a more polished cabin, since it adds SofTex and keeps the 4Runner’s essential capability intact.
- TRD Off-Road: Choose this if you want the strongest off-road focus without jumping all the way to the most expensive performance-oriented trim.
- TRD Off-Road Premium: This is the best fit if you want off-road hardware plus a nicer interior, making it a strong middle ground for capability and comfort.
- TRD Pro: Pick this if you want the most serious off-road setup and are willing to pay for it.
- Limited: This is the trim for you if comfort matters more than trail hardware, since it leans into leather, chrome, and a more upscale presentation.
- Nightshade Special Edition: Choose this if you want the stealthier blacked-out look and care more about style than added capability.
- Venture Special Edition: This is the best fit if you want a more adventurous look and equipment set, including the standard roof rack and TRD wheels.
The safety package is standard across the lineup, which makes it easier to shop by comfort, style, and capability rather than by basic protection equipment.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Toyota 4Runner?

- Deal availability: 27.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.

- Price trend: Prices have held steady compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 69.6% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $33,524.39, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2020 Toyota 4Runner's resale value?
The current average of $35,878 sits slightly below last year's $36,216.
That small decline suggests the market has stayed relatively stable rather than dropping sharply, which is a good sign if you plan to sell later. For you, that means the 4Runner’s value is holding up well enough that depreciation pressure appears manageable. Its strong owner satisfaction also helps support demand, especially among buyers who want durability and off-road capability.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.85/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2020 Toyota 4Runner safe?
The 2020 Toyota 4Runner earns Good ratings from IIHS, except for a Marginal result in the small overlap front: driver-side test. It also earns four-star ratings overall from NHTSA, with three-star ratings in rollover testing.
It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.
Toyota Safety Sense P is standard, and it includes adaptive cruise control, lane-departure alert, a pre-collision system with pedestrian detection, and automatic high beams. The 4Runner also comes with eight standard airbags. The main caveat is that the SUV’s high center of gravity and imprecise steering make its reactive lane-departure alert feel less reassuring than a more active lane-keeping system would.
Should I buy a 2020 Toyota 4Runner or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2020 if:
- 27.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 69.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have held steady compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.85/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It adds standard Toyota Safety Sense P and an updated 8-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
Consider the 2019 if:
- At $32,113, the 2019 costs less than the current year's $35,878 average.
- It emphasizes rugged off-road capability with a more dated but still practical setup.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $37,222, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $35,878 average.
- It leans harder into reliability, resale value, and go-anywhere utility.
The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price, updated tech, and standard safety equipment, the 2020 is the smart default. If you are especially price-sensitive, the 2019 can save you money while keeping the same basic mission. If you are willing to spend more for a newer example, the 2021 is the stronger choice for buyers who prioritize long-term appeal and can accept the same old-school compromises.
