Why it stands out
The 2020 Kia Soul stands out because it blends the utility of a small SUV with the efficiency and driving refinement of a compact car. Its compact, boxy styling gives it a distinctive look, and that shape helps it deliver form and function in equal measure. It is also unusual in how it fits into the market, since it can be compared with small hatchbacks and subcompact SUVs alike.
For buyers, the Soul’s appeal comes from its spaciousness and easy-to-use technology, along with a lower starting price than most of its competitors. The car’s latest redesign gives it a more futuristic appearance, which adds to its personality and helps it feel modern and distinctive. At the same time, it is not without compromises: advanced safety features are not standard, and its performance is fairly pedestrian.

It has most of the features that I want in a car. Just missing the push start button.

The car handles great (a lot better than expected) and the gas millage is very good. The pick up with the CVT transmission is very good (again better than expected). The only complaint i have is that the drivers seat bottom doesnt tilt. It gets a little uncomfortable after an hour of sitting. The gas millage is 34.5 mpg average according to the computer, Ill verify that at the time of filling up. If the computer is accurate, the millage is very good considering my trip to work is very hilly.

This is the perfect car for us to pull behind our motorhome. Plus it’s extremely cute and fun to drive. Surprisingly it does not feel cramped. So far we love it.

Yes — the 2020 Kia Soul earns a 4.67/5 user rating and an 8.5/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Form and function at 10/10.
Owners consistently praise the spacious interior, fun driving experience, stylish design, and easy-to-use technology. They also describe it as a strong value with good gas mileage and useful safety features.
The main trade-offs are that the engine can feel short on power and some comfort details fall short, including the driver’s seat not tilting. In practical terms, the Soul fits you well if you want a roomy, distinctive small vehicle that feels more versatile than its price suggests.
Only 31.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals, so the market still rewards careful shopping.
Is the 2020 Kia Soul reliable?
Owners rate it 4.67/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback points to a dependable, trouble-free ownership experience, with praise for the car’s gas mileage, spacious cabin, and overall value. The expert evaluation also notes refined driving behavior and a quiet, composed feel under acceleration, which supports the impression that the Soul is easy to live with over time.
You should still watch for wear items and condition differences between listings, because used examples can vary a lot in how well they were maintained.
What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Kia Soul?
At 65.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re comparing multiple trims or higher-mileage examples. Focus on condition, equipment completeness, and whether the car’s safety and convenience features work as expected. Because the Soul’s appeal depends heavily on value and usability, a clean, well-kept example matters more than chasing the lowest sticker price.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The LX is pretty basic, with 16-inch steel wheels, manual front-seat adjustments, one USB input, Bluetooth connectivity, power windows, and not much else. The S adds 16-inch alloy wheels, body-color mirrors, premium cloth seats, remote keyless entry, and more driver-assistance features, while the EX adds heated side mirrors, an 8-way power driver’s seat, heated front seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, push-button start, additional USB ports, and the larger 10.25-inch infotainment screen. CarGurus recommends the S trim because it adds meaningful equipment without the higher price of the upper trims.
- Powertrain: Most trims use a 2-liter, 4-cylinder engine with 147 horsepower and 132 pound-feet of torque, paired with a CVT and front-wheel drive. The base LX can also be had with a 6-speed manual transmission. The GT-Line Turbo uses a 1.6-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine with 201 hp and 195 lb-ft of torque, paired with a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission.
- Safety package: The S trim adds forward-collision warning and avoidance, lane-keep assist, lane-change assist, blind-spot warning, and rear cross-path detection. The X-Line loses forward-collision warning, while the EX brings it back. The GT-Line Turbo adds adaptive cruise control, a head-up display, and pedestrian detection for the forward-collision warning and avoidance system.
- Infotainment: The LX, S, X-Line, and GT-Line use a 7-inch touchscreen, while the EX and GT-Line Turbo get a 10.25-inch screen. All trims include Kia’s UVO system, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto.
- Fuel efficiency: The 2-liter engine with automatic transmission returns 27 mpg city, 33 highway, and 30 combined. The base LX with a manual transmission returns 25 mpg city, 31 highway, and 27 combined. The turbo model returns 27 mpg city, 32 highway, and 29 combined.
Which 2020 Kia Soul trim should I buy?
The 2020 Kia Soul is offered in 6 trim levels: LX, S, X-Line, EX, GT-Line, and GT-Line Turbo.
Here's the short version:
- LX: This is the cheapest way into the Soul, but it is very bare-bones. You get the basics plus a 7-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, so it works if your priority is low entry cost and you can live without the nicer convenience and safety upgrades.
- S: This is the best-value trim. It adds alloy wheels, remote keyless entry, premium cloth seats, and the key driver-assistance features that make the Soul easier to recommend for everyday use.
- X-Line: Choose this if you want the more adventurous look and the extra exterior hardware, but it is not the best value because it gives up some of the safety content found on the S and EX.
- EX: This is the comfort-and-tech upgrade. The heated seats, power driver’s seat, dual-zone climate control, push-button start, and larger 10.25-inch screen make it the most appealing step up if you want a more polished cabin.
- GT-Line: This trim is for you if styling matters most. It adds unique exterior design elements and keeps the Soul’s practical core, but it is more about appearance than major capability gains.
- GT-Line Turbo: This is the performance-oriented choice, with the stronger turbo engine, upgraded transmission, and extra premium features. It makes sense if you want the most power and the richest equipment list.
The safety-package trim note is simple: the S adds the most important driver-assistance features, while the X-Line drops forward-collision warning and the EX restores it.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Kia Soul?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you can shop with some leverage if you stay patient.
- Deal availability: 31.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,491 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.59% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 65.9% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $12,586, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2020 Kia Soul's resale value?
The current average of $12,663 sits slightly below last year's $13,704.
That softer pricing suggests the Soul has already absorbed some of its depreciation, which can help future sellers if they buy at the right price. A lower entry cost today can make it easier to recover a reasonable share of your money later, especially if you choose a well-equipped trim and keep the car in clean condition. Strong demand for practical, value-focused small vehicles should continue to support interest in the model.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.67/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2020 Kia Soul safe?
It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.
Standard safety features include front- and side-impact airbags, a reversing camera, traction control, hill-start assist, and a tire pressure monitoring system. The S trim adds forward-collision warning and avoidance, lane-keep assist, lane-change assist, blind-spot warning, and rear cross-path detection.
A notable caveat is that advanced safety features are not standard, and the X-Line loses forward-collision warning before it returns on the EX. The GT-Line Turbo adds adaptive cruise control, a head-up display, and pedestrian detection for the forward-collision warning and avoidance system.
Should I buy a 2020 Kia Soul or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2020 if:
- 31.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 65.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.59% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.67/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2020 stands out for its refined driving dynamics, lower starting price, and form-and-function balance.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $13,909, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $12,663 average.
- It adds a standard rear occupant alert and revised suspension tuning for the X-Line and GT-Line.
The bottom line: If you want the better value play, the 2020 is the stronger buy because it combines a lower average price with solid owner satisfaction and a broad range of trims. If you’re willing to pay more for a slightly updated version, the 2021 is worth a look, but price-sensitive buyers should focus on the 2020 and shop carefully for a clean, well-equipped example.
