Is the 2020 Honda Civic Hatchback a good car?

Yes — the 2020 Honda Civic Hatchback earns a 4.86/5 user rating, and our experts give it a 7.67/10. The standout strength is Performance at 9/10.

Owners consistently praise its sporty handling, stylish design, and impressive fuel efficiency. They also note improved features and sound insulation over previous models, which helps it feel more polished than a basic commuter hatch.

The main trade-off is the outdated technology, and the expert review also points to an aging-feeling cabin interface. Even so, the Civic Hatchback makes sense if you want a small car that feels engaging to drive and still works well as everyday transportation.

Good and great deals account for 32.1% of listings, so you have some room to shop selectively.

The expert review reinforces that impression by describing the engine as quiet, refined, and well mannered, which supports the sense that the car should be easy to live with over time. It also notes that the Civic Hatchback is a practical daily driver rather than a high-strung performance machine, which usually helps with long-term ownership confidence.

If you buy used, the biggest reliability risk is less about the core driving hardware and more about finding a well-kept example with a clean maintenance history and no hidden wear.

What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Honda Civic Hatchback?

At 57.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a careful inspection of body panels, paint consistency, tires, brakes, and interior wear. Because the model’s appeal depends heavily on how well it has been maintained, condition matters a lot when you compare similarly priced listings.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The LX is the least expensive choice, but it misses the 7-inch touchscreen found on higher trims. The Sport adds the more desirable styling and is the best-value pick if you want the strongest mix of appearance and price, while the EX and EX-L add more comfort and upscale touches. Sport Touring sits at the top with stitched leather, premium audio, navigation, and the most complete feature set.
• Powertrain: The Civic Hatchback uses a turbocharged 1.5-liter 4-cylinder. LX, EX, and EX-L make 174 horsepower, while Sport and Sport Touring make 180 horsepower. The CVT is the efficiency-oriented choice, while the 6-speed manual is available on Sport Touring and delivers a more involved driving feel.
• Safety package: Every Civic Hatchback includes Honda Sensing, with forward-collision warning and automatic emergency braking, automatic high-beam headlights, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, Road Departure Mitigation, and adaptive cruise control. CVT-equipped versions also add low-speed following. There’s no blind-spot monitoring or rear cross-traffic alert, and LaneWatch only covers the right side.
• Infotainment: In all but LX trim, you get a 7-inch touchscreen with Bluetooth and a volume knob. Sport Touring adds Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, satellite radio, text-messaging support, navigation, a quick-charging USB port, and a 12-speaker premium sound system.
• Fuel efficiency: The expert test car returned 32 mpg in combined driving, and the review notes 32.7 mpg on the testing loop.

Which 2020 Honda Civic Hatchback trim should I buy?

The 2020 Honda Civic Hatchback is offered in 4 trim levels: LX, Sport, EX, EX-L.

Here's the short version:

• LX: This is the entry point, but it’s the most stripped-down version and misses the 7-inch touchscreen that comes on the higher trims. It makes sense only if your priority is getting into the model at the lowest price.
• Sport: This is the best-value trim. It keeps the price reasonable while adding the more appealing styling and the stronger 180-horsepower tune, making it the sweet spot for most used shoppers.
• EX: Choose this if you want a more comfort-oriented setup than Sport and are willing to pay more for it. It builds on the core Civic Hatchback formula without going all the way to the top trim.
• EX-L: This is the upscale choice if you want a more premium-feeling cabin and are willing to spend more for it. It’s the right pick if comfort and interior finish matter more to you than value.

Every Civic Hatchback includes Honda Sensing, so you get the full driver-assistance suite regardless of trim.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Honda Civic Hatchback?

This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so it pays to compare listings carefully and move quickly on the right car.

• Deal availability: 32.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 938 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 5.21% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 57.9% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $19,428, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2020 Honda Civic Hatchback's resale value?

The current average of $19,758 sits slightly below last year's $20,844.

That decline suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you as a buyer now but may limit upside if you plan to resell soon. If you buy at a strong price and keep the car in clean condition, you can still protect value reasonably well.

The model’s broad appeal helps support future demand, especially because shoppers continue to respond to its style, efficiency, and driving character. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.86/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2020 Honda Civic Hatchback safe?

The 2020 Honda Civic Hatchback did not earn a Top Safety Pick rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety because of a Poor performance in the headlight category.

It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.

Every Civic Hatchback includes Honda Sensing as standard, with forward-collision warning and automatic emergency braking, automatic high-beam headlights, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, Road Departure Mitigation, and adaptive cruise control. CVT-equipped versions also add low-speed following.

The main caveat is that this version of Honda Sensing is described as aging, with lane-keeping assist that lacks refinement and adaptive cruise control that can brake unexpectedly. You also don’t get blind-spot monitoring or rear cross-traffic alert, so you’ll need to rely on LaneWatch for right-side visibility.

Should I buy a 2020 Honda Civic Hatchback or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2020 if:

• 32.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 57.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 5.21% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.86/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2020 refresh brought updated styling, more sound insulation, and improved feature packaging.

The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price, features, and driving enjoyment, the 2020 is a smart target year. If you’re especially price-sensitive, you may also want to compare it with nearby model years to see whether a cleaner or better-equipped example offers more value for the money.
