CarGurus Analysis: 2020 Chevrolet Suburban

Summary
With 1,562 currently listed for sale and an average price of $27,166, 32.5% of 2020 Chevrolet Suburbans for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2020 Chevrolet Suburban 4.75 / 5 stars.
69.5% of 2020 Suburban models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2020 Chevrolet Suburban stands out as a full-size SUV built around space, capability, and long-haul usefulness. It carries up to nine people, offers up to 121.1 cubic feet of cargo space, and can tow up to 8,300 pounds when properly configured. Chevrolet also gave it a more refined and higher-quality interior, along with the latest technology from the General Motors swag bag, which helps explain why it has long appealed to buyers who need one vehicle that can do a lot of different jobs.
For 2020, the Suburban continued with the 420-horsepower 6.2-liter V8 in the RST, and Chevrolet made no substantial changes to the Suburban that year. That means buyers looking at this model year get a proven formula rather than a major redesign. The tradeoff is that the Suburban’s size remains a real consideration, and fuel economy is not one of its strengths. The source also notes reported climate control problems in the 2015 and 2016 models, but otherwise describes the 11th-generation Suburban as relatively trouble-free.

Having worked in the automotive industry and having owned no fewer than 35 cars;I can be pretty picky when it comes to a vehicle. The Chevrolet Suburban is an iconic vehicle that has been around since the 1930s. Its strength is the fact that it is a pickup based ( full frame) vehicle with a V8 engine. I own one for hauling people and towing. There is nothing on the market that compares to the quality and usefulness of the Suburban. I tried the Ford Expedition and I was not impressed with the eco boost engine or the fuel economy so I returned to the Suburban. The basic LS trim package provides everything a person needs in a vehicle and of course you can always go upscale and buy a GMC Denali XL or a Cadillac Escalade extended length all of which are the same vehicle platform with more bells and whistles and a bigger price tag. All variations of the Suburban, Denali XL and Cadillac Escalade are made in Arlington, Texas so you really are getting an American Made product, which is proudly represented by a skilled UAW labor force. The only thing I wish GM would seriously consider is offering the new 2024 and newer Chevrolet Suburban in a 2500/3500 HD model with both the 6.6 gas and the big L5P Duramax Diesel motor. Some people need the towing capacity that the HD offers but in the form of an SUV for towing horse trailers, boats and campers. If you are needing a large and comfortable vehicle with reasonable fuel economy; this may be the vehicle for you.

The Suburban is in a class of its own. This is a great luxury vehicle that can handle many passengers comfortably. The ride is great and has plenty of pulling power. The downside is the fuel economy and reliability of some of the electronics.

How much does the 2020 Chevrolet Suburban cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $26,970 |
| Year-Round Low | $26,970 |
| Year-Round High | $31,610 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $31,606 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −14.67% |
Prices have softened 14.67% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 1,605 listings available, which gives you a solid pool to compare prices and equipment.
Is the 2020 Chevrolet Suburban a good car?
Yes — the 4.75/5 user rating points to strong owner satisfaction. Drivers consistently praise its spaciousness, smooth ride, and towing capabilities, and the model’s long-haul usefulness makes it especially appealing if you need one vehicle for family duty and heavy cargo. The overview also frames it as a full-size SUV built around space, capability, and long-term practicality, which fits shoppers who want maximum utility rather than a smaller crossover. With 33.0% of listings marked as good or great deals, you still have room to shop selectively.
Is the 2020 Chevrolet Suburban reliable?
Owners rate it 4.75/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The user feedback also points to a dependable ownership experience overall, with praise for its long-haul usefulness and strong capability. The overview describes the 11th-generation Suburban as relatively trouble-free, which supports the idea that this model year can be a sensible used buy if you want a big SUV you can count on.
For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is less about the core formula and more about condition, maintenance history, and electronics.
What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Chevrolet Suburban?
At 68.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should run a vehicle history report before you commit, especially if the price looks unusually attractive. Put inspection priority on body condition, signs of prior repair, and how well the electronics and climate systems operate. Because this is a large, heavily used SUV, you want to focus on overall wear and evidence of consistent maintenance, not just mileage.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Chevrolet Suburban?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently but should move quickly on the best examples.
- Deal availability: 33.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,605 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 14.67% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 68.7% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $26,970, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2020 Chevrolet Suburban's resale value?
The current average of $26,970 sits slightly below last year's $31,606.
That price movement suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy at a more favorable entry point. For a future seller, that also means resale value will depend heavily on how well your specific vehicle stands out on condition, mileage, and history. If you buy carefully now, you may be better positioned to limit depreciation later.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.75/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2020 Chevrolet Suburban or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2020 if:
- 33.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 68.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 14.67% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.75/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $38,337, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $26,970 average.
- It adds a turbodiesel option for improved fuel economy.
The bottom line: If you want the better value today, the 2020 is the stronger starting point because pricing has eased and inventory is broad enough to shop carefully. If you’re willing to pay more for the newer year and its added efficiency option, the 2021 is the better secondary path for buyers who prioritize that upgrade over upfront cost.
