For decades, the Chevrolet Suburban has commanded respect among those who value space, flexibility, and practicality. Now in its 11th generation, which hit the market in 2015, the Suburban received some performance update options last year. The 2020 model carries over mostly unchanged. Other large SUVs worth consideration include the Chevy Tahoe, Ford Expedition, and Toyota Sequoia.
Even the top-end Premium’s most upscale features, such as HID headlights and heated side mirrors, enhance functionality. Standard wheel sizes are 18 or 20 inches, with optional wheel 22-inch wheel designs available. This year, several trims offer Midnight Edition packages, which include blacked-out wheels, exterior trim, and special badging.
The Suburban’s base powertrain is a 5.3-liter V8 rated for 355 hp and 383 lb-ft of torque matched with a 6-speed automatic transmission. The Premier trim is offered with a 6.2-liter V8, making 420 hp and 460 lb-ft, plus a 10-speed automatic transmission. Both are available with rear-wheel drive (RWD) or 4-wheel drive (4WD). The Premier trim can be fitted with the RST Performance Package, which upgrades to a magnetic ride control suspension system, and the Max Trailering Package boosts tow capacity from 6,300 to 8,300 pounds. The 5.3-liter engine is EPA-rated for 15 mpg city, 22 highway, and 18 combined with RWD and 14/21/16 with 4WD.
The Suburban can be configured for seven, eight, or nine passengers, thanks to the ability to specify benches or captain’s chairs in the first two rows, depending on trim level. Cloth upholstery comes standard in the base LS trim, while the LT and Premier upgrade to leather. Other standard features include remote start and 3-zone automatic climate control. The LT gets a standard power liftgate. The Premier gets front heated and ventilated seats, second-row heated seats, a power-folding third row bench, and a hands-free power liftgate.
As for infotainment, standard features include an 8-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and a built-in WiFi hotspot. The LT trim gets a Bose 9-speaker audio system, and the Premier adds navigation, a 10-speaker Bose audio system, and wireless device charging. A rear-row entertainment system is available.
The National Highway and Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) awarded the Suburban a safety rating of 4 out of 5 stars overall. Every Suburban comes with a reversing camera, rear park assist, and the Teen Driver safety settings system. The LT trim adds automatic high beams, forward-collision alert, lane-keep assist, lane-departure warning, automatic emergency braking, and a safety alert seat. Premier adds lane-change alert, side blind-zone alert, and rear cross-traffic alert. Premier also offers advanced adaptive cruise control and a head-up display (HUD) as available options.
Despite its traditional underpinnings, this SUV is fully modern and well worth a look.
I have a 2020 chevy suburban. I added a grill guard and although it does not physically block the sensors, they detect the guard. The parking sensors beep constantly and the cruse control will not work. I would like to know how to disconnect the forward sensor array and still be able rot use the regular cruse control?
