With 307 currently listed for sale and an average price of $19,945, 30.6% of 2019 Toyota Priuses for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.

Why it stands out
The 2019 Toyota Prius stands out as a practical hybrid that checks a lot of boxes for everyday buyers. It is described as reliable, efficient, affordable, practical, and safe, and it is also noted as decent to drive. For shoppers focused on value and fuel savings, those strengths make it an easy car to understand.
Toyota also made a few notable changes for 2019, including toning down the design, revising the trim-level strategy, and adding a new electric all-wheel-drive option. That helps broaden the Prius’ appeal beyond its core efficiency mission. At the same time, its styling remains a drawback, and the technology is described as outdated, so the car’s strengths are balanced by a couple of clear compromises.

The 2019 Prius is an excellent car. Great mileage and a very comfortable ride. In our Prius XLE, we get about 52 mpg. We have been driving the Toyota Prius brand for over 5 years. Great choice. Lots of features but the sound system is excellent and we can run Youtube and Spotify through the car as well as all phone calls.

Great mileage and surprisingly has power and acceleration if Normal or Power mode is selected. The Eco mode sustains well and for cruising on highway or city is sufficient! Very Happy

| Year-Round High | $19,996 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $19,468 |

There are 310 listings available, which suggests a modest amount of inventory for shoppers to compare.
Is the 2019 Toyota Prius a good car?
Yes — the 2019 Toyota Prius earns a 5/5 user rating and a 7.33/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Cost effectiveness at 10/10.
Owners consistently praise its impressive fuel economy, quiet interior, and helpful features, and they also highlight reliability and comfort for daily driving. The overview frames it as a practical, affordable hybrid that is easy to understand if you want value and fuel savings. On the downside, the expert review points to polarizing styling and outdated technology, while user feedback also notes the sound system and limited performance in some modes. Even so, the market still shows 31.3% good or great deals, which means you can still find attractive listings if you shop carefully.
Is the 2019 Toyota Prius reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The user summary points to reliability, and it also emphasizes that owners value the car’s trouble-free feel, comfort, and savings on gas. The expert cost-effectiveness commentary reinforces that view by describing the Prius as historically reliable and trouble-free. It also notes that ownership makes logical and financial sense, which is the kind of language used for a car you can count on over time. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about the hybrid concept itself and more about finding a well-kept example with a clean maintenance history.
What should I look for when buying a used 2019 Toyota Prius?
At 61% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a thorough pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has had body damage or multiple owners. Focus on condition, maintenance records, and whether the hybrid system, brakes, and interior electronics have been cared for properly. Because the Prius is often bought for efficiency and low running costs, you want to make sure the example you choose still delivers on those strengths.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The lineup ranges from L Eco to Limited, and the base setup is the most stripped-down. Higher trims add more comfort and convenience, while the Limited gets the most upscale infotainment and connected services.
- Powertrain: A 1.8-liter 4-cylinder engine works with an electric motor for 121 horsepower. The optional electric AWD system adds a rear motor for extra traction at low speeds and in slippery conditions, but it also lowers fuel economy.
- Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense is standard and includes adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, and automatic high-beam headlights. LE trim adds blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and parking sensors with parking assist.
- Infotainment: The standard system uses a 6.1-inch touchscreen with Bluetooth and a CD player. The Limited trim gets an 11.6-inch split-screen display with navigation, the Entune App Suite, a premium JBL sound system, satellite radio, and Safety Connect. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are not included.
- Fuel efficiency: A standard front-drive Prius gets 52 mpg combined, or 56 mpg in L Eco trim. The AWD-e version gets 50 mpg combined, and the expert review notes that the added traction comes with lower mileage.
Which 2019 Toyota Prius trim should I buy?
The 2019 Toyota Prius is offered in 4 trim levels: L Eco, LE, XLE, Limited.
Here's the short version:
- L Eco: This is the efficiency-first choice, with the best EPA fuel economy figure in the lineup. It makes the most sense if your top priority is maximizing gas savings and you do not need extra equipment.
- LE: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds useful safety upgrades like blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and parking sensors. It is also one of the trims that can be paired with AWD-e.
- XLE: This trim is the better pick if you want a more polished daily driver, especially with the available AWD-e setup and the standard 17-inch wheels mentioned in the expert review.
- Limited: This is the most feature-rich version, with the large 11.6-inch infotainment screen, navigation, JBL audio, and Safety Connect. It is the right choice if you want the most technology and convenience.
Toyota Safety Sense is standard on every trim, while LE and above add the extra driver-assistance features noted above.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2019 Toyota Prius?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you have room to compare listings and wait for the right one.
- Deal availability: 31.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 310 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices are up 2.71% year-over-year.
- Clean inventory: 61.0% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $17,995, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2019 Toyota Prius's resale value?
The current average of $19,996 sits slightly above last year's $19,468.
That upward move suggests the market has held up well for this model year, which is a positive sign if you plan to sell later. The combination of strong fuel economy, practical utility, and broad shopper appeal helps support demand. At the same time, the car’s polarizing styling may narrow the audience a bit, so condition and mileage will matter when you go to resell. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2019 Toyota Prius safe?
The 2019 Toyota Prius earns a Top Safety Pick rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety and a five-star overall rating from NHTSA, even though front passenger protection in a frontal-impact crash measures four-star.
It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.
Toyota Safety Sense is standard on every Prius and includes adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, and automatic high-beam headlights. LE trim adds blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and parking sensors with parking assist, while Safety Connect is reserved for the Limited trim. The IIHS note about Acceptable small-overlap front passenger protection is the main caveat to keep in mind.
Should I buy a 2019 Toyota Prius or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2019 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2019 if:
- 31.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 61% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices are up 2.71% year-over-year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2019 adds a new electric all-wheel-drive option and revises the trim strategy.
Consider the 2020 if:
- At $21,574, the 2020 costs more than the current year's $19,996 average.
- It broadens the Prius’ appeal as a more established hybrid standard-bearer with strong versatility and available all-wheel drive.
The bottom line: If you want the better value today, the 2019 is the smarter starting point because it combines strong owner satisfaction, solid safety, and a lower average price. If you are willing to spend more for the next model year’s broader hybrid appeal and can stretch your budget, the 2020 is the secondary path to consider.
