CarGurus Analysis: 2019 Toyota Prius

Summary
With 292 currently listed for sale and an average price of $19,538.00, 30.8% of 2019 Toyota Priuses for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2019 Toyota Prius 5 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.33 / 10.
57.5% of 2019 Prius models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2019 Toyota Prius stands out as a practical hybrid that covers a lot of the basics well. It is described as reliable, efficient, affordable, practical, and safe, and it is also noted as decent to drive. That combination makes it appealing to shoppers who want a car that is easy to live with and strong on value, especially since fuel efficiency is one of its clear strengths.
Toyota also made several changes for 2019, including toning down the design, revising the trim-level strategy, and adding a new electric all-wheel-drive option. Those updates give the Prius a broader appeal than just its efficiency alone. At the same time, its styling remains a drawback, and the technology is described as outdated, so the Prius still asks buyers to accept some compromises in exchange for its everyday usefulness and gas-saving ability.

The 2019 Prius is an excellent car. Great mileage and a very comfortable ride. In our Prius XLE, we get about 52 mpg. We have been driving the Toyota Prius brand for over 5 years. Great choice. Lots of features but the sound system is excellent and we can run Youtube and Spotify through the car as well as all phone calls.

Great mileage and surprisingly has power and acceleration if Normal or Power mode is selected. The Eco mode sustains well and for cruising on highway or city is sufficient! Very Happy

How much does the 2019 Toyota Prius cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $19,448 |
| Year-Round Low | $17,993.22 |
| Year-Round High | $19,449.97 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $19,374 |
| Change vs. Last Year | +0.38% |
Prices have held steady compared to this time last year, signaling a stable and predictable market for this model year.
There are 281 listings available, which suggests a modest amount of inventory for you to compare. If you find a listing below $17,993.22, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2019 Toyota Prius a good car?
Yes — the 2019 Toyota Prius earns a 5/5 user rating and a 7.33/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Cost effectiveness at 10/10.
Owners consistently praise its impressive fuel economy, quiet interior, and helpful features, and they also value its reliability and comfort for daily driving. The overview frames it as practical, affordable, and safe, which fits the way it shows up in owner feedback. The main trade-offs are its polarizing styling and outdated technology, and the expert review also points to a design that does the car no favors and infotainment that feels behind the times. Even so, the market still shows 31.7% good or great deals, which supports its value-oriented appeal.
Is the 2019 Toyota Prius reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction. The owner summary also points to reliability, and the expert cost-effectiveness commentary says it has historically proven reliable and trouble-free. That same expert assessment reinforces the Prius as a car you can count on for practical ownership, and it notes that the first scheduled maintenance visit is on the house for the top trim. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about the basic formula and more about making sure the specific car has been maintained well.
What should I look for when buying a used 2019 Toyota Prius?
At 56.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has been in a prior collision. Focus on body condition, repair quality, and whether the car’s features work as expected, since the Prius is meant to be a low-stress daily driver. It also makes sense to compare trim equipment carefully, because some of the most useful convenience and safety features are not standard on every version.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The lineup ranges from L Eco, LE, XLE, and Limited, and the base setup is the most stripped-down. Toyota Safety Sense is standard, but the Limited trim is where you get the top infotainment system and Safety Connect, while LE adds blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and parking sensors.
- Powertrain: A 1.8-liter 4-cylinder engine and electric motor make 121 horsepower combined. The optional electric AWD system adds a rear motor for extra traction, but it also lowers fuel economy.
- Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense is standard and includes adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, and automatic high-beam headlights. LE adds blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and an Intelligent Clearance Sonar system with parking-assist function.
- Infotainment: The standard setup uses a 6.1-inch touchscreen with Bluetooth and a CD player, while the Limited trim gets an 11.6-inch split-screen display with navigation, the Entune App Suite, a premium JBL sound system, satellite radio, and Safety Connect. Neither system includes Apple CarPlay or Android Auto.
- Fuel efficiency: A front-drive Prius returns 52 mpg in combined driving, or 56 mpg in L Eco trim. The AWD-e version drops to 50 mpg, and the expert test loop returned 48.6 mpg.
Which 2019 Toyota Prius trim should I buy?
The 2019 Toyota Prius is offered in 4 trim levels: L Eco, LE, XLE, Limited.
Here's the short version:
- Base trim: L Eco is the efficiency-first choice, but it is the least richly equipped version and skips the added convenience and safety upgrades found higher up the range.
- Sweet-spot trim: LE is the best value pick because it adds blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and parking sensors without pushing you into the most expensive trims.
- Premium/top trim: Limited is the one to get if you want the most advanced infotainment, with the large 11.6-inch display, navigation, JBL audio, satellite radio, and Safety Connect.
- Off-road trim: AWD-e is worth considering only if you specifically want extra traction, because it costs more and reduces fuel economy.
Toyota Safety Sense is standard on every Prius, and LE adds blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and parking sensors.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2019 Toyota Prius?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you have room to shop carefully without expecting deep discounts everywhere.
- Deal availability: 31.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 281 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have held steady compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 56.9% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $17,993.22, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2019 Toyota Prius's resale value?
The current average of $19,448 sits slightly above last year's $19,374.
That small increase suggests the Prius has held its value fairly well rather than swinging sharply in either direction. For a future seller, that kind of stability is helpful because it points to a market that still values the car’s efficiency and practicality. The model’s strong owner satisfaction also supports demand, especially among shoppers who prioritize low running costs and everyday usefulness.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2019 Toyota Prius safe?
The Prius gets a five-star rating from NHTSA, with four-star front passenger protection in a frontal-impact crash. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gives it a Top Safety Pick rating, with small overlap front passenger frontal impact protection rated as Acceptable instead of Good.
It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.
Toyota Safety Sense is standard, and it includes adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, and automatic high-beam headlights. LE trim adds blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and an Intelligent Clearance Sonar system with parking-assist function. The main caveat is that the IIHS small-overlap front passenger result is only Acceptable, so you should still pay close attention to crash history and repair quality on any used example.
Should I buy a 2019 Toyota Prius or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2019 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2019 if:
- 31.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 56.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have held steady compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2019 adds a revised trim strategy and an available electric all-wheel-drive option.
Consider the 2020 if:
- At $21,641, the 2020 costs more than the current year's $19,448 average.
- It adds a stronger hybrid benchmark identity with broader appeal.
The bottom line: You should lean toward the 2019 if you want the better price and a stable market with strong owner satisfaction. If you can spend more and want the next year’s broader hybrid appeal, the 2020 is the cleaner upgrade path; if value matters most, the 2019 is the smarter buy.
