CarGurus Analysis: 2018 Volkswagen Tiguan
overall

Summary
With 1,852 currently listed for sale and an average price of $12,671, 33.1% of 2018 Volkswagen Tiguans for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2018 Volkswagen Tiguan 4.73 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.33 / 10.
65.3% of 2018 Tiguan models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2018 Volkswagen Tiguan stands out by shifting its priorities toward the needs of mainstream compact-SUV shoppers. Volkswagen added 58 percent more cargo space, and the model also emphasizes backseat room, the option of a third row, and the latest in-car and safety technology. That makes it a more practical and family-friendly choice than the Tiguan’s earlier, more niche approach.
At the same time, that broader appeal comes with a tradeoff. The 2018 Tiguan is described as losing some of the driving excitement that once made Volkswagens special, so it is less about personality and more about everyday usefulness. Even so, owners commonly praise its value for money, spacious interior, luxurious features, comfortable ride, and handling, while some note that the engine could be more powerful and that the back seat can feel tight for car seats.

Best vehicle for several features for safety, durability, and price. Great vehicle and great gas mileage. The only thing missing in the car is air conditioned seats. I would definitely buy another one.

Really great car for the value. Super tidy SUV with 3rd row seating, highly recommend going for the SEL for the interior package. Electronics are great, only minor downside is apple car play only works if youre plugged in via USB. Otherwise, very happy with the car and value.

The infotainment system is awesome. Great ride, this car is definitely up their with the Audi Q3 actually it has more initial power than the Q3. I don’t think the car is missing anything, just a all around great vehicle. So happy I purchased it.

Is the 2018 Volkswagen Tiguan a good car?
Yes — the 2018 Volkswagen Tiguan earns a 4.73/5 user rating and a 7.33/10 expert rating. The model scores 9/10 across Form and function and Technology.
Owners consistently praise its value for money, spacious interior, and luxurious features, and they also like the comfortable ride and handling. That lines up with the Tiguan’s focus on everyday usefulness, especially if you want more cargo space, backseat room, and family-friendly practicality than the earlier Tiguan offered. With 33.8% of listings priced as good or great deals, you still have room to shop selectively.
Is the 2018 Volkswagen Tiguan reliable?
Owners rate it 4.73/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback points to a vehicle that feels dependable and trouble-free in day-to-day use, with buyers repeatedly highlighting the Tiguan’s value and comfort over the long haul. The expert evaluation also frames it as a practical, mass-market crossover that’s built to handle daily driving and weekend trips with confidence. If you’re shopping used, the main ownership risk is less about outright complexity and more about finding one that has been maintained well and hasn’t been worn down by family-duty use.
What should I look for when buying a used 2018 Volkswagen Tiguan?
At 65.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle-history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re considering a higher-mileage example or one with family-hauling duty. Pay close attention to body condition, interior wear, and evidence of prior repairs, since those are the areas most likely to reveal how the vehicle was treated. If you’re comparing multiple listings, the cleanest history and best maintenance record should carry extra weight.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base S includes LED taillights, integrated roof rails, power/heated side mirrors, automatic headlights, trailer hitch preparation, and a 6-speaker stereo with a 6.5-inch touchscreen and Bluetooth. The SE adds keyless access with push-button start, dual-zone climate control, heated front seats, leatherette upholstery, and an 8-inch touchscreen. The SEL adds remote start, navigation, a panoramic sunroof, adaptive cruise control, and a one-touch power liftgate, while the SEL Premium adds ambient lighting, power-folding side mirrors, rain-sensing wipers, a heated steering wheel, leather seating, and a hands-free power liftgate.
- Powertrain: The Tiguan uses a 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder with 184 horsepower and 221 pound-feet of torque, paired with an 8-speed automatic. Front-wheel drive is standard, and 4Motion all-wheel drive is available. The driving character is tuned more for everyday commuting than quick acceleration.
- Safety package: Forward-collision warning with autonomous emergency braking and a blind-spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert are optional on the base S trim, but standard on all other trims. The SEL adds adaptive cruise control, and the SEL Premium adds a 360-degree camera, active blind-spot monitor, lane-departure warning system, automatic high beams, and park distance control.
- Infotainment: The base setup uses a 6.5-inch touchscreen, while the SE upgrades to an 8-inch touchscreen with voice control. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are included, and the SEL Premium adds the Volkswagen Digital Cockpit.
- Fuel efficiency: The FWD Tiguan is rated at 22 mpg city, 27 highway, and 24 combined. The 4Motion version is rated at 21 city, 27 highway, and 23 combined.
Which 2018 Volkswagen Tiguan trim should I buy?
The 2018 Volkswagen Tiguan is offered in 4 trim levels: S, SE, SEL, and SEL Premium.
Here's the short version:
- S: This is the value play if you want the lowest entry price and can live with the most basic equipment. It still gives you the core Tiguan experience, but the safety tech that matters most is optional here, so you’ll want to check whether a specific listing has the driver-assistance package.
- SE: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds the features you’re most likely to notice every day: keyless access, push-button start, heated front seats, dual-zone climate control, and the larger 8-inch touchscreen. It’s the sweet spot if you want a well-equipped Tiguan without stretching too far up the range.
- SEL: Choose this if you want a more premium feel and more convenience tech. The navigation system, panoramic sunroof, adaptive cruise control, and power liftgate make it a stronger fit if you spend a lot of time on the highway or want a more upscale family SUV.
- SEL Premium: This is the right pick if you want the most luxury and convenience features the Tiguan offers, including leather seating, a heated steering wheel, the hands-free liftgate, and the digital instrument display. It makes sense if you want the most fully loaded version and are willing to pay for it.
Forward-collision warning with autonomous emergency braking and blind-spot monitoring are optional on the S trim but standard on all other trims.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2018 Volkswagen Tiguan?
This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.
- Deal availability: 33.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,859 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 8.04% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 65.1% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $12,665, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2018 Volkswagen Tiguan's resale value?
The current average of $12,665 sits slightly below last year's $13,771.
That price movement suggests the Tiguan has softened enough to be attractive to used buyers, but it also means future sellers may face some pressure if the market stays competitive. If you buy at the right price and keep the vehicle in strong condition, you’ll be better positioned to limit depreciation losses later. Listings with clean history and desirable equipment should hold up better than rougher examples.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.73/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2018 Volkswagen Tiguan safe?
It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.
The Tiguan comes standard with dual front- and side-impact airbags, side-curtain airbags, a tire pressure monitoring system, electronic stability control, and a reversing camera. Forward-collision warning with autonomous emergency braking and a blind-spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert are optional on the base S trim, but standard on all other trims. The SEL adds adaptive cruise control, while the SEL Premium adds a 360-degree camera, active blind-spot monitor, lane-departure warning system, automatic high beams, and park distance control.
Should I buy a 2018 Volkswagen Tiguan or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2018 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2018 if:
- 33.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 65.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 8.04% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.73/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2018 model emphasizes cargo space, backseat room, and the option of a third row, making it a practical family-focused choice.
The bottom line: The 2018 Tiguan makes the most sense if you want the roomiest, most practical version of this generation and you’re shopping with value in mind. If your priority is the lowest possible purchase price, a nearby year may still be worth comparing, but the 2018 stands out for its space, features, and strong owner satisfaction.
