CarGurus Analysis: 2018 Volkswagen Tiguan
overall

Summary
With 149 currently listed for sale near Houston, TX and an average price of $13,359, 25.5% of 2018 Volkswagen Tiguans for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2018 Volkswagen Tiguan 4.73 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.33 / 10.
85.9% of 2018 Tiguan models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2018 Volkswagen Tiguan stands out by shifting its priorities toward the needs of mainstream compact-SUV shoppers. Volkswagen added 58 percent more cargo space, and the model also emphasizes backseat room, the option of a third row, and the latest in-car and safety technology. That makes it a more practical and family-friendly choice than the Tiguan’s earlier, more niche approach.
At the same time, that broader appeal comes with a tradeoff. The 2018 Tiguan is described as losing some of the driving excitement that once made Volkswagens special, so it is less about personality and more about everyday usefulness. Even so, owners commonly praise its value for money, spacious interior, luxurious features, comfortable ride, and handling, while some note that the engine could be more powerful and that the back seat can feel tight for car seats.

Best vehicle for several features for safety, durability, and price. Great vehicle and great gas mileage. The only thing missing in the car is air conditioned seats. I would definitely buy another one.

Really great car for the value. Super tidy SUV with 3rd row seating, highly recommend going for the SEL for the interior package. Electronics are great, only minor downside is apple car play only works if youre plugged in via USB. Otherwise, very happy with the car and value.

The infotainment system is awesome. Great ride, this car is definitely up their with the Audi Q3 actually it has more initial power than the Q3. I don’t think the car is missing anything, just a all around great vehicle. So happy I purchased it.

Is the 2018 Volkswagen Tiguan a good car?
Yes — the 2018 Volkswagen Tiguan earns a 4.73/5 user rating and a 7.33/10 expert rating. The model scores 9/10 across Form and function and Technology.
Owners consistently praise its value for money, spacious interior, and luxurious features, and they also like the comfortable ride and handling. In practical terms, that lines up with the Tiguan’s focus on family use, extra cargo room, backseat space, and available third-row seating.
With 32.3% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have room to shop selectively and still find strong value.
Is the 2018 Volkswagen Tiguan reliable?
Owners rate it 4.73/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback points to a vehicle that feels dependable and trouble-free in everyday use, with buyers especially appreciating the Tiguan’s value and comfort over the long haul. The expert evaluation also frames it as a mainstream, daily-driving SUV built to serve family needs rather than chase excitement.
If you’re buying used, the main long-term ownership risk is making sure the specific vehicle you choose has been maintained well and hasn’t been worn down by heavy family use.
What should I look for when buying a used 2018 Volkswagen Tiguan?
At 65.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle-history report and then prioritize a thorough pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re considering a higher-mileage example or one with family-hauling duty. Focus on body condition, interior wear, and evidence of consistent maintenance, since those are the areas most likely to reveal how the SUV has been used.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base S trim includes LED taillights, integrated roof rails, power/heated side mirrors, automatic headlights, trailer hitch preparation, and a 6-speaker stereo with a 6.5-inch touchscreen and Bluetooth. The SE adds keyless access with push-button start, dual-zone climate control, a leather multi-function steering wheel, a power driver’s seat, heated front seats, leatherette upholstery, and an 8-inch touchscreen with voice control. The SEL adds remote start, navigation, a panoramic sunroof, adaptive cruise control, and a one-touch power liftgate, while the SEL Premium adds ambient lighting, power-folding mirrors, rain-sensing wipers, a heated steering wheel, leather seating, a hands-free power liftgate, and a 9-speaker Fender audio system.
- Powertrain: The Tiguan uses a 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder with 184 horsepower and 221 pound-feet of torque, paired with an 8-speed automatic. Front-wheel drive is standard, and 4Motion AWD is available. The performance notes point to sluggish acceleration unless you use Sport mode, so you should expect comfort and utility more than quick response.
- Safety package: Forward-collision warning with autonomous emergency braking and a blind-spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert are optional on the base S trim, but standard on all other trims. The SEL adds adaptive cruise control, and the SEL Premium adds a 360-degree camera, active blind-spot monitor, lane-departure warning system, automatic high beams, and park distance control.
- Infotainment: The Tiguan offers a 6.5-inch touchscreen on the base trim and an 8-inch touchscreen on the SE and above. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are included, and the system is described as easy to use with large icons and clear graphics. The SEL Premium also adds the Volkswagen Digital Cockpit.
- Fuel efficiency: The FWD Tiguan is rated at 22 mpg city, 27 highway, and 24 combined. The 4Motion version is rated at 21 city, 27 highway, and 23 combined.
Which 2018 Volkswagen Tiguan trim should I buy?
The 2018 Volkswagen Tiguan is offered in 4 trim levels: S, SE, SEL, and SEL Premium.
Here's the short version:
- S: This is the entry point, and it gives you the core Tiguan experience with the standard touchscreen, Bluetooth, roof rails, and the practical cabin layout. It makes sense if you want the lowest starting price and are comfortable adding safety tech only if the right option package is present.
- SE: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds keyless access, push-button start, heated front seats, dual-zone climate control, and the larger 8-inch touchscreen. It also brings the standard safety upgrades that are optional on the base trim, which makes it the smartest all-around choice.
- SEL: Choose this if you want more convenience and driver-assistance features, including navigation, adaptive cruise control, remote start, and a power liftgate. It’s the right step up if you want a more premium daily driver without going all the way to the top trim.
- SEL Premium: This is the luxury-leaning version, with leather seating, ambient lighting, a Fender audio system, a hands-free liftgate, and the Volkswagen Digital Cockpit. It suits you best if you want the most upscale Tiguan experience and are willing to pay for it.
The safety package is optional on the base S trim and standard on the rest of the lineup, so that alone makes the SE the trim most buyers should target.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2018 Volkswagen Tiguan?

- Deal availability: 32.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,854 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 8.02% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 65.3% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $12,684, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2018 Volkswagen Tiguan's resale value?
The current average of $12,684 sits slightly below last year's $13,790.
That price movement suggests the Tiguan has already absorbed some depreciation, which can help future sellers if they buy at the right price today. If you keep the vehicle in clean condition and maintain it well, you’re more likely to preserve value than someone who buys at the top of the market.
The Tiguan’s broad appeal as a practical family SUV should help support demand, especially for well-equipped trims with strong condition history.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.73/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.
The Tiguan comes standard with dual front- and side-impact airbags, side-curtain airbags, a tire pressure monitoring system, electronic stability control, and a reversing camera. Forward-collision warning with autonomous emergency braking and a blind-spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert are optional on the base S trim, but standard on all other trims. The SEL adds adaptive cruise control, while the SEL Premium adds a 360-degree camera, active blind-spot monitor, lane-departure warning system, automatic high beams, and park distance control.
Should I buy a 2018 Volkswagen Tiguan or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2018 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2018 if:
- 32.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 65.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 8.02% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.73/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2018 model year emphasizes cargo space, backseat room, available third-row seating, and the latest in-car and safety technology.
The bottom line: If you want the Tiguan’s most practical and family-friendly version, the 2018 is the one to focus on. If you’re especially price-sensitive, shop carefully for a clean, well-equipped example and prioritize the SE or a similarly equipped trim so you get the best mix of value and safety.
