CarGurus Analysis: 2018 Volkswagen Passat
overall

Summary
With 85 currently listed for sale near Worcester, MA and an average price of $11,077, 25.9% of 2018 Volkswagen Passats for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2018 Volkswagen Passat 4.71 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it an 8 / 10.
88.2% of 2018 Passat models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2018 Volkswagen Passat stands out as a midsize sedan that adds some much-needed sportiness to a long-running formula. Volkswagen gave it a more-powerful base engine, and the lineup also gained a new GT trim with a V6 and a sport suspension. That combination makes this Passat more interesting than a purely practical family sedan, while still keeping it competitive in the segment.
It also became more appealing on the safety front, since blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert and a forward-collision warning system with automatic emergency braking could now be added to the base S trim. At the same time, the Passat was described as getting a little long in the tooth, so its appeal is less about cutting-edge freshness and more about offering a familiar sedan with useful updates.
Owners of the 2018 Volkswagen Passat also praised its roomy interior, comfortable seating, and impressive trunk space, along with its value, peppy acceleration, and smooth ride. Some noted the absence of features such as memory seats and a home link system, and a few commented that the steering felt soft.

I have the SE Trim level. Roomy sedan that fits two adults up front and two kids plus a car seat in the back. On top of that it has the pep and acceleration of a sports car. Smooth ride yet fun to drive. The perfect all around combination.

You get a lot of bang for your buck with the VR6 in this surprisingly roomy sedan. The rear seat and trunk room is impressive. Pros - VR6 is powerful and pulls strong in any gear at any speed. It also has a wonderful throaty exhaust note. Put a Borla exhaust on this and you gain about 30 bhp and wow does it sound mean! - LED headlights are wonderful for night time visibility. - Tons of trunk space for a mid-sized sedan. - Handles well through turns with only minimum body roll. - Lots of standard safety features - AEB, Rear cross traffic alert, blind spot monitor, etc. Cons - Soft steering - Skinny tires, need more rubber on the road to use all that horsepower without chirping or spinning when the lead foot is unleashed. -

Is the 2018 Volkswagen Passat a good car?
Yes — the 2018 Volkswagen Passat earns a 4.71/5 user rating and an 8/10 expert rating. The model scores 9/10 across Performance and Cost effectiveness.
Owners consistently praise the roomy interior, comfortable seating, impressive trunk space, peppy acceleration, and smooth ride. That lines up with the Passat’s midsize-sedan mission: you get a practical family car with a bit more sportiness than the usual formula, plus useful updates that keep it competitive.
The market also shows 33.2% of listings as good or great deals, which gives you some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2018 Volkswagen Passat reliable?
Owners rate it 4.71/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback points to a dependable, trouble-free ownership experience centered on comfort, value, and everyday usability. The expert evaluation also emphasizes that the Passat remains a competitive option in the midsize segment, with a smoother, more eager base engine and a lineup that feels more refined than before.
If you’re buying used, the main long-term risk is less about outright mechanical drama and more about finding a well-kept example with the features and condition you want.
What should I look for when buying a used 2018 Volkswagen Passat?
At 55.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle-history report and then prioritize a careful inspection of bodywork, panel alignment, tires, brakes, and any signs of prior repair. Because the Passat’s appeal depends heavily on comfort and value, condition matters a lot: a clean, well-maintained car is much easier to recommend than one with unresolved cosmetic or accident-related issues.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base S trim includes automatic headlights, 16-inch alloy wheels, a rear-view camera, power driver’s seat, dual-zone automatic climate control, and a 5-inch touchscreen, but it lacks Car-Net App-Connect. The R-Line adds heated side mirrors and seats, V-Tex leatherette upholstery, a larger 6.3-inch touchscreen, and more aggressive styling. The SE adds keyless ignition and entry, a sunroof, rear air vents, and adaptive cruise control. The SEL Premium adds real leather, a power passenger seat, power-folding mirrors, an automatic parallel parking system, lane-departure warning, and a memory seat system. The GT stands out with a sport suspension, better-sounding exhaust, 19-inch wheels, and unique trim and aesthetic touches.
- Powertrain: The base engine is a 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder with 174 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque, paired with a 6-speed automatic. The GT and SEL Premium can be fitted with a 3.6-liter V6 that makes 280 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque, paired with a 6-speed DSG.
- Safety package: Blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert and forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking can be added to the base S through the Driver Assistance package. The GT comes standard with blind-spot monitoring and forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking. Lane-departure warning is available only on the SEL Premium.
- Infotainment: The base S gets a 5-inch touchscreen, while the R-Line upgrades to a 6.3-inch touchscreen. The SE Technology Package brings an upgraded infotainment system, and nearly all trims include Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. The system does not include wireless smartphone integration or OTA capability in the provided data.
- Fuel efficiency: The base 2.0-liter engine is rated at 25 mpg city, 36 highway, and 29 combined. The V6 returns 19/28/22.
Which 2018 Volkswagen Passat trim should I buy?
The 2018 Volkswagen Passat is offered in 5 trim levels: S, R-Line, SE, SEL Premium, GT.
Here's the short version:
- S: This is the value entry point if you want the lowest-cost way into the Passat lineup, but you should know it misses Car-Net App-Connect unless you add the Driver Assistance package. It still gives you the core comfort and convenience basics, and the package can add blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert and forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking.
- R-Line: This trim is the better pick if you want a more upscale feel without jumping all the way to the top of the range. You get heated side mirrors and seats, V-Tex leatherette upholstery, a larger touchscreen, and more aggressive styling, making it a strong middle-ground choice.
- SE: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds keyless ignition and entry, a sunroof, rear air vents, and adaptive cruise control while keeping the lineup relatively accessible. If you want the most useful everyday upgrades without paying for the luxury-focused top trim, this is the one to target.
- SEL Premium: Choose this if you want the most comfort and convenience features, including real leather, a power passenger seat, power-folding mirrors, an automatic parallel parking system, lane-departure warning, and a memory seat system. It’s the most feature-rich trim, and it can also be fitted with the V6.
- GT: Pick this if you want the most character. The GT adds a sport suspension, better-sounding exhaust, 19-inch wheels, and unique styling touches, plus the V6. It’s the trim for you if you want the Passat to feel more engaging without giving up comfort.
The safety package on the base S is a meaningful plus, since it lets you add blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert and forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2018 Volkswagen Passat?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently but still move quickly on the right car.
- Deal availability: 33.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 681 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.68% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 55.8% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $11,941, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2018 Volkswagen Passat's resale value?
The current average of $12,382 sits slightly below last year's $12,724.
That softer pricing suggests the Passat has already absorbed some depreciation, which can help future sellers if they buy at the right price. If you purchase near the lower end of the range and keep the car in clean condition, you may have a better chance of limiting your loss later. The current market also shows enough demand to support resale, especially for well-equipped examples with strong condition and a clean history.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.71/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2018 Volkswagen Passat safe?
The 2018 Volkswagen Passat earns a five-star overall rating from NHTSA, but it also receives Marginal ratings on the passenger side in the small-overlap front crash test and headlight tests, which keep it from earning a Top Safety Pick title from the IIHS.
It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.
The Passat includes plenty of airbags, including side curtains for front and rear passengers. Volkswagen also makes useful driver-assistance tech available, including blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert and forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking. On the GT, those features come standard, while the base S can be equipped with the Driver Assistance package for the same core protection.
The main caveat is that the IIHS results are not class-leading, so you should pay close attention to trim and equipment when comparing used examples.
Should I buy a 2018 Volkswagen Passat or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2018 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2018 if:
- 33.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 55.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.68% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.71/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- Volkswagen added a more-powerful base engine, a new GT trim, and more available safety tech this year.
Consider the 2017 if:
- At $10,638, the 2017 costs less than the current year's $12,382 average.
- It emphasizes comfort, value, and standard safety tech across the lineup.
The bottom line: If you want the better-rounded Passat, the 2018 is the stronger pick because it brings the upgraded engine, the GT trim, and more available safety equipment. If your priority is spending less up front, the 2017 is the smarter budget play, especially if you can find one in clean condition with the features you want.
