CarGurus Analysis: 2018 Subaru Forester

Summary
With 2,975 currently listed for sale and an average price of $16,521.00, 32.1% of 2018 Subaru Foresters for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2018 Subaru Forester 4.75 / 5 stars.
67.7% of 2018 Forester models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2018 Subaru Forester stands out as a practical compact SUV that leans hard into the qualities many used buyers want most: space, visibility, and all-weather confidence. In this generation, Subaru had already built in a stronger focus on comfort, safety, and efficiency, and the Forester’s larger body and taller passenger compartment helped create a roomy cabin with excellent outward visibility. Standard symmetrical all-wheel drive also gives it a clear identity, making it especially appealing to drivers who want a dependable SUV for bad weather or light adventure use.
What makes the 2018 model especially attractive is how well it balances everyday usefulness with a fairly refined driving experience. The Forester’s safety story is a major part of its appeal, since EyeSight was standard on all models by this year. Buyers also benefit from the generation’s improved ride, stability, and handling, along with the added practicality of a large cargo area. At the same time, it is not the most exciting SUV to drive, and the CVT can feel sluggish, so shoppers looking for strong acceleration may want to temper expectations.
Even so, the 2018 Subaru Forester remains easy to recommend for buyers who value comfort and utility over flash. Its reputation for reliability and practicality, combined with standard AWD and a spacious, user-friendly cabin, gives it broad appeal as a used family vehicle. For many shoppers, that straightforward competence is exactly what makes it distinctive.

The features on this crossover are never ending! The ride is as smooth as butter! The turbo engine makes you forget it's a V4! To find an eight year old Forester with under 41,000 miles was a blessing & I expect to have it for another 11 to 15 years!

LOVE my new 2018 Subaru Outback! I was shocked to see how roomy it is...Im 511 & my husband is 65 and our long legs can very comfortably stretch out in the front. My husband can even fit comfortably in the back! I also love the heated front seats...great for my achy back. Love the steerling wheel controls...easy to navigate. Love the brake assist & lane assist. The brake assist has already helped keep from rear-ending someone who stopped short in front of me! I wasnt considering an Outback when searching for a new car, but Im sooooo happy I listened to my sister (who has loved her Outback for the past 8 years & who is 62...also needs a lot of room) and test drove some. The standard safety features & super roomy interior really make me feel like this was the perfect car for me & my family.

Very nice comfortable seating. Lots of leg room, user friendly operations and knob/button placement. Interior lighting and dashboard are excellent, very nice sound system, Car sits higher than older Foresters which is great, feels solid and sturdy like a luxury suv. Large moonroof, very powerful cold a/c, smooth mostly quiet ride, extra large rear cargo space and push button close hatch is awesome. Back up camera and lane keeper features very helpful. Only negative is no a/c vents for backseat passengers.

| Year-Round High | $17,183.51 |

If you find a listing below $15,888.74, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2018 Subaru Forester a good car?
Yes — the 2018 Subaru Forester earns a 4.75/5 user rating, which points to strong owner satisfaction.
Drivers repeatedly praise its spacious interior, safety features, and smooth driving experience. Comfortable seating and user-friendly technology also come up often, which fits a compact SUV that prioritizes everyday usability. For you, that means it makes the most sense if you want a practical family vehicle with all-weather confidence and a cabin that’s easy to live with.
With 32.4% of listings marked as good or great deals, you still have room to shop selectively.
Is the 2018 Subaru Forester reliable?
Owners rate it 4.75/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback also points to a dependable, trouble-free ownership experience, with reliability and practicality showing up as recurring strengths. That matters if you want a used SUV you can count on for daily driving, commuting, and family duty.
For used buyers, the main long-term risk is choosing a poorly maintained example, so condition and service history should carry real weight.
What should I look for when buying a used 2018 Subaru Forester?
At 68.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report so you can separate clean examples from cars with past damage. After that, prioritize a thorough inspection of body panels, alignment, and interior wear so you can judge whether the vehicle’s condition matches the asking price. It also helps to focus on how the car drives and whether the cabin equipment works as expected, since those details can reveal how well it was cared for.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2018 Subaru Forester?

- Deal availability: 32.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 3,085 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 4.05% compared with last year.

What is the 2018 Subaru Forester's resale value?
The current average of $16,490 sits slightly below last year's $17,185.
That softer pricing suggests the model has become a bit more buyer-friendly, which can help you if you’re shopping now but may limit upside if you plan to resell soon. Still, the Forester’s strong owner satisfaction and practical reputation help support steady demand. If you keep the vehicle in clean condition and maintain it well, you should be in a better position when it’s time to sell.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.75/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2018 Subaru Forester or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2018 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2018 if:
- 32.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 68.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 4.05% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.75/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2017 if:
- At $14,714, the 2017 costs less than the current year's $16,490 average.
- It offers a sensible, safety-focused package with a straightforward value proposition.
Consider the 2019 if:
- At $18,871, the 2019 costs more than the current year's $16,490 average.
- It adds standard all-wheel drive and advanced safety features in a practical, easy-to-use package.
The bottom line:
You should start with the 2018 if you want the best balance of price, owner satisfaction, and everyday usefulness. If your budget is tighter, the 2017 is the better value play, while the 2019 makes sense if you’re willing to pay more for a newer-feeling alternative.
