CarGurus Analysis: 2017 Toyota Sequoia

Summary
With 255 currently listed for sale and an average price of $27,974, 32.2% of 2017 Toyota Sequoias for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 Toyota Sequoia 4.5 / 5 stars.

Why it stands out
The 2017 Toyota Sequoia stands out as a large, truck-based SUV built for buyers who want three rows of seating and the durability that comes with a body-on-frame design. It shares its platform with the Tundra, and Toyota’s buying guide emphasizes the Sequoia’s North American focus, its family-hauling mission, and its reputation for dependable powertrains. That combination gives it a clear identity: it is a full-size SUV that prioritizes toughness, towing ability, and long-term durability over carlike refinement.
What makes the 2017 model especially appealing is the Sequoia’s established formula. The guide describes the second-generation Sequoia as a reliable family hauler with tried-and-true components, and it notes that all Sequoias from 2013 onward got the 5.7-liter V8. It also highlights the sliding rear window as a standout feature, while warning that the rear window mechanism can be a problem area and that frame rust is something shoppers should inspect carefully. The same section also points out that brakes are a common wear item because of the Sequoia’s size and 6,000-pound curb weight.
For buyers considering a used 2017 Toyota Sequoia, the appeal is straightforward: it offers the space, strength, and reputation for reliability that many large SUV shoppers want, while still carrying some of the compromises of a truck-based design. Fuel economy is a known weak point, and the ride can be truck-like, but those drawbacks are part of the Sequoia’s character.

Nice driving vehicle. Good features on the limited model. The only thing this one did not have was a remote starter option, which we will get installed. This the reason for the 4 star and not 5 star rating.

Good ride and lots of room. Like most of the controls except some could be more user friendly, IE: have to push button every time to fold in mirrors. Should be setting to do it automatically. Our last sequoia lasted forever and we NEVER had to do a thing to it. If this ones is as good, Ill be over the top happy!

Yes — the 4.5/5 user rating points to strong owner satisfaction for this model year. The 2017 Toyota Sequoia is a large, truck-based SUV built for you if you want three rows of seating, towing-oriented strength, and the durability that comes with a body-on-frame design. It shares its platform with the Tundra, and its appeal centers on a family-hauling mission with dependable powertrains and a clear focus on toughness over carlike refinement. 33.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals, which gives you some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2017 Toyota Sequoia reliable?
Owners rate it 4.5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction. The 2017 Toyota Sequoia’s appeal is built around tried-and-true components, a reputation for dependable powertrains, and the kind of rugged construction that suits long-term use. It is also described as a reliable family hauler with a clear emphasis on durability, though its truck-based design means you should expect the usual compromises that come with a large SUV. For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is making sure prior wear, age-related issues, and heavy-use history have not outweighed the Sequoia’s durability advantages.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Toyota Sequoia?
At 60.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important. You should run a vehicle history report and pay close attention to any signs of past collision repair, especially if the listing price looks unusually attractive. A pre-purchase inspection should focus on the rear window mechanism, frame rust, and brake wear, since those are highlighted as areas worth checking carefully. Because this is a large, truck-based SUV, condition matters a lot more than mileage alone.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Toyota Sequoia?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently but still move quickly on the right listing.
- Deal availability: 33.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 257 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.90% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 60.3% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $26,699, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 Toyota Sequoia's resale value?
The current average of $27,971 sits slightly below last year's $28,807. That tells you the market has eased a bit, which can help you as a buyer now but may also mean a future seller has less pricing power than before. If you buy at a strong price and keep the vehicle in clean condition, you can help protect your eventual resale position. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2017 Toyota Sequoia or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 33.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 60.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.90% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
The bottom line: You should lean toward the 2017 if you want the Sequoia’s established formula, strong family-hauling utility, and a market that still offers some deal opportunities. If you are especially price-sensitive, a nearby year may be worth comparing, but the 2017 remains a sensible choice when you want the core Sequoia strengths and can verify condition carefully.
