CarGurus Analysis: 2017 Toyota Highlander
overall

Summary
With 2,114 currently listed for sale and an average price of $20,542.00, 32.5% of 2017 Toyota Highlanders for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 Toyota Highlander 4.86 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.17 / 10.
61.5% of 2017 Highlander models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2017 Toyota Highlander stands out as a family-oriented crossover that was refreshed to stay competitive. Toyota gave it updated styling, an updated V6 engine, a new sport-oriented SE trim, and made its Safety Sense system standard, giving the Highlander a stronger mix of appearance, performance, and safety equipment than before.
That combination helps explain why the Highlander remained appealing to buyers looking for a comfortable and well-equipped SUV. The available owner feedback reinforces that appeal, with praise for its comfort, power, and smooth driving experience, along with its family-friendly design and useful features. At the same time, some owners noted disappointment with the spare tire and bucket seat options, so the Highlander’s strengths are balanced by a few practical compromises.

Nicest car I’ve ever owned! Beautiful color, absolutely loaded with options. Comfortable, great power, handles well in snow. Easy access to third row with captains’ seats in second row. Easy to operate radio/clock/blue tooth. It’s similar to Honda Pilot, but maybe a bit smaller. I traded in a Honda CRX and found Highlander just as easy to drive and park. Excellent value.

Is the 2017 Toyota Highlander a good car?
Yes — the 4.86/5 user rating points to strong owner satisfaction. The expert rating is 7.17/10, and the model scores 8/10 across Look and feel and Form and function.
Owners consistently praise its comfort, power, and family-friendly design, along with a smooth driving experience and impressive features. The overview also points to a spacious interior and practical storage solutions, which fits the Highlander’s role as a family-oriented crossover. With a moderate market verdict and 32.7% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have some room to shop carefully without feeling rushed.
Is the 2017 Toyota Highlander reliable?
Owners rate it 4.86/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback also emphasizes comfort, power, and a family-friendly design, while describing the Highlander as a strong value as a crossover SUV. On the road, the updated V6 and 8-speed automatic are presented as a capable, smooth combination, and the model’s standard safety suite adds to the sense that it’s built for dependable everyday use. Toyota also makes the first scheduled maintenance visit part of the ownership experience, which helps lower early upkeep friction.
For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about outright durability and more about finding a well-kept example that hasn’t been worn down by family-duty use.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Toyota Highlander?
At 61.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the listing price looks unusually attractive. Focus on condition details that matter in a family SUV: interior wear, seat condition, touchscreen placement and usability, and whether the third row meets your needs. If you’re considering a higher-mileage example, pay close attention to how the drivetrain and suspension feel on a test drive.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base LE is described as starting with the old 2.7-liter 4-cylinder, which is called under-powered and unrefined for the Highlander’s size. Even at the base level, you do get alloy wheels, heated mirrors, Bluetooth, wiper de-icers, and standard Toyota Safety Sense, but the LE Plus is where the lineup starts to feel more complete with tri-zone climate control, an 8-inch touchscreen, a power driver’s seat, and a power liftgate.
- Powertrain: The updated 3.5-liter V6 gains 25 hp and 15 lb-ft, and it’s paired with an 8-speed automatic. The V6 is described as capable in traffic and on the highway, with mileage estimates of 20 mpg city, 27 highway, and 23 combined with rear-wheel drive, or 19 city, 26 highway, and 22 combined with all-wheel drive.
- Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense is standard and includes adaptive cruise control with forward-collision warning and auto braking, lane-departure warning and intervention, and auto high beams. That standardization is a major plus, though the base trim still lacks some convenience and luxury features found higher up the range.
- Infotainment: The Highlander adds four USB charge ports this year, and the LE Plus brings an 8-inch touchscreen. A rear-seat BluRay entertainment system is optional, and the 12-speaker JBL stereo is reserved for the Limited trim.
- Fuel efficiency: The V6 is rated at 20 mpg city, 27 highway, and 23 combined with rear-wheel drive, or 19 city, 26 highway, and 22 combined with all-wheel drive. Real-world driving returned an average of 19 mpg.
Which 2017 Toyota Highlander trim should I buy?
The 2017 Toyota Highlander is offered in 5 trim levels: LE, LE Plus, XLE, Limited, and Limited Platinum.
Here's the short version:
- Base trim: The LE is the least compelling choice because it starts with the 4-cylinder engine that’s described as inadequate for the Highlander’s size. It does include standard Toyota Safety Sense, but you give up the stronger V6 and several comfort features that make the SUV feel properly equipped.
- Sweet-spot trim: The LE Plus is the best value starting point because it adds the features many shoppers will want right away, including tri-zone climate control, an 8-inch touchscreen, a power driver’s seat, and a power liftgate.
- Premium/top trim: The Limited and Limited Platinum bring the most luxury and convenience, including leather, rear-seat entertainment, heated seats, navigation, rear parking sensors, front-seat heat and ventilation, a driver memory system, a JBL sound system, second-row captain’s chairs, a panoramic sunroof, front parking sensors, auto wipers, and a heated steering wheel.
- Off-road trim: The SE is the one to consider if you want the sportier suspension and styling, but it’s not the best fit if you’re mainly shopping for a typical daily driver.
Toyota Safety Sense is standard across the lineup, which makes even the lower trims easier to recommend from a safety standpoint.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Toyota Highlander?
This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you’re patient and focused.
- Deal availability: 32.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 2,109 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.71% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 61.5% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $19,639.13, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 Toyota Highlander's resale value?
The current average of $20,542 sits slightly below last year's $21,114.
That softer pricing can help you buy more confidently now, but it also suggests future sellers may need to be realistic if the market stays competitive. A model year that has already moved down from its prior average can be easier to position for a sale if you keep it in strong condition and avoid accident history. The Highlander’s broad appeal as a family SUV should help support demand, especially for well-kept examples with desirable equipment.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.86/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2017 Toyota Highlander safe?
The Highlander earns top overall marks from both IIHS and NHTSA, and the NHTSA gives it a five-star overall rating with four-star ratings in the frontal crash and rollover tests.
It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.
Toyota Safety Sense is standard and includes adaptive cruise control with forward-collision warning and auto braking, lane-departure warning and intervention, and auto high beams. That standard suite is a major strength, especially for family shoppers. The main caveat is the IIHS headlights result, which is rated Acceptable rather than top-tier.
Should I buy a 2017 Toyota Highlander or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 32.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 61.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.71% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.86/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The updated V6, new SE trim, and standard Toyota Safety Sense make this year feel meaningfully refreshed.
The bottom line: If you want the best mix of updated power, standard safety tech, and broad family appeal, the 2017 is the year to target. If your priority is simply the lowest possible purchase price, a nearby year may be worth comparing, but you’ll want to weigh that against the 2017’s stronger feature set and refreshed drivetrain.
