overall

Summary
With 1,165 currently listed for sale and an average price of $16,158.00, 34.3% of 2014 Toyota Highlanders for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2014 Toyota Highlander 4.78 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it an 8.67 / 10.

Why it stands out
The 2014 Toyota Highlander stands out as a family crossover that feels more engaging than the segment stereotype suggests. Toyota gave it enough power, technology, and athletic styling to make everyday driving feel more appealing, while still keeping it practical for routine errands and weekend trips. It is described as being just as capable and competent running to the corner store as it is heading up to the mountains, which captures its broad usefulness well.
That balance is a big part of its appeal. The Highlander is presented as a vehicle for buyers who need family-friendly space and versatility but do not want something dull to live with. Owner feedback reinforces that impression, with praise for reliability, comfort, value for money, and a spacious interior with useful features. At the same time, some owners wished for better fuel economy and seat comfort, and noted the absence of modern conveniences such as push-button start and a sunroof.

Overall the experience of driving the vehicle is fantastic. The higher seating above a sedan car makes this a pleasant ride in any weather enabling the driver to see far ahead when driving in heavy traffic. It has enough air bags to float a tank.

Our Limited AWD is a very solid car that we expect to drive for a long time. Very comfortable seats. The space is easily configured for people or cargo. Love the shelf under the dash!

Overall... excellent vehicle. Front row and 2nd row seats adjust to accommodate most drivers/riders. I did alot of shopping around before I made my purchase and what I found is that the Highlander is really the best value for the money. The interior is very nice... not cheap looking as compared to some other mid-size SUVs which were actually more expensive.

The car feels solid, that’s what I was looking for. The downside is that the seats are uncomfortable and the mirrors don’t fold in.

How much does the 2014 Toyota Highlander cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $16,122 |
| Year-Round Low | $14,953.48 |
| Year-Round High | $16,203.53 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $16,083 |
| Change vs. Last Year | +0.24% |
Prices have held steady compared to this time last year, signaling a stable and predictable market for this model year.
There are 1,218 listings available, which gives you a solid pool to compare trims, mileage, and condition. If you find a listing below $14,953.48, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2014 Toyota Highlander a good car?
Yes — the 4.78/5 user rating points to strong owner satisfaction, and the expert rating is 8.67/10. The standout strength is Safety at 10/10.
Owners consistently praise its reliability, comfort, and value for money, and they also like the spacious interior and useful features. The overview frames it as a family crossover that still feels engaging to drive, with enough power and versatility for errands, school runs, and weekend trips. With 32.0% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have a decent chance of finding one that fits your budget well.
Is the 2014 Toyota Highlander reliable?
Owners rate it 4.78/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction. The owner feedback also repeatedly points to reliability and a dependable, trouble-free ownership experience, with praise for comfort and value reinforcing that impression.
The expert review backs up that sense of durability by describing it as a capable family crossover that can handle everyday use with confidence. The cost-effectiveness commentary also suggests you get a lot of content for the money, which matters when you plan to keep a used SUV for the long haul.
For used buyers, the main ownership risk is less about outright mechanical drama and more about finding a well-kept example that has been maintained consistently.
What should I look for when buying a used 2014 Toyota Highlander?
At 55.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the listing price looks unusually attractive. Pay close attention to signs of prior bodywork, uneven panel gaps, tire wear, and interior condition, since those clues can reveal how the SUV was treated. Because this model is often bought for family duty, it is worth checking that the cabin, seats, and electronics all work as expected.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base LE includes standard seating for 8, a 6.1-inch touchscreen, a backup camera, Bluetooth hands-free calling, and plenty of storage, while the LE Plus adds three-zone climate control with rear climate toggles, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shifter, and SofTex leatherette seating. The XLE adds navigation, leather seating, and a detailed color digital display, and the Limited adds 19-inch wheels, a JBL audio system, and upgraded safety tech like blind-spot monitoring.
- Powertrain: The base LE uses a 185-hp 2.7-liter inline 4-cylinder, while a 3.5-liter V6 is optional on the LE and standard on the LE Plus and above. The V6 is paired with a 6-speed automatic, and Eco mode helps efficiency by softening throttle response and keeping the transmission in a higher gear.
- Safety package: The standard safety equipment includes a backup camera, tire pressure monitoring system, and a full array of advanced front and side impact airbags. With the available pre-collision system, it earns a Top Safety Pick Plus award, and available driver aids include lane-departure warning, automatic high beams, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert.
- Infotainment: The Highlander uses an Entune multimedia touchscreen interface with apps such as Pandora, Yelp, and Bing. The screen is 6.1 inches, and navigation-equipped vehicles do not get a dedicated dash button for that function.
- Fuel efficiency: The V6 FWD trims are rated at 19 mpg city/25 highway, the I4 FWD trims at 20/25, and the AWD test trim was listed at 18/24.
Which 2014 Toyota Highlander trim should I buy?
The 2014 Toyota Highlander is offered in 4 trim levels: LE, LE Plus, XLE, Limited.
Here's the short version:
- LE: This is the value entry point if you want the core Highlander formula at the lowest starting price. You get seating for 8, a 6.1-inch touchscreen, a backup camera, Bluetooth, and the basic family-friendly utility that makes the model appealing in the first place.
- LE Plus: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds meaningful comfort upgrades without jumping all the way to the higher-priced models. The three-zone climate control, leather-wrapped steering wheel and shifter, and SofTex seating make it feel more polished for daily family use.
- XLE: Choose this if you want a more upscale cabin and are willing to pay for it. Navigation, leather seating, and the color digital display give it a more premium feel, but it is best for buyers who specifically want those convenience upgrades.
- Limited: This is the trim to consider if you want the most equipment, including 19-inch wheels, a JBL audio system, and upgraded safety tech like blind-spot monitoring. It makes the Highlander feel the most fully loaded, though you should only pay for it if you will use the extra features.
The available pre-collision system is the key safety-package upgrade to look for if safety tech matters most to you.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2014 Toyota Highlander?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you have room to shop carefully without feeling rushed.
- Deal availability: 32.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,218 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have held steady compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 55.2% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $14,953.48, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2014 Toyota Highlander's resale value?
The current average of $16,122 sits slightly above last year's $16,083.
That small increase suggests the market has stayed stable rather than swinging sharply in either direction. For a future seller, that kind of pricing pattern is helpful because it points to predictable demand and less risk of a sudden value drop. If you buy well and keep the vehicle in good condition, you are starting from a relatively steady pricing base.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.78/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2014 Toyota Highlander safe?
It earns a Top Safety Pick Plus rating from IIHS when equipped with the available pre-collision system.
It earns a 10/10 safety score from our experts.
The standard safety equipment includes a backup camera, tire pressure monitoring system, and a full array of advanced front and side impact airbags. The available pre-collision system is the key safety suite, and the Highlander can also be equipped with lane-departure warning, automatic high beams, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert. If you are comparing listings, it is worth prioritizing one with the available safety tech because the feature set is a major part of the model’s appeal.
Should I buy a 2014 Toyota Highlander or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2014 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2014 if:
- 32.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 55.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have held steady compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.78/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2014 Highlander stands out for bringing more power, technology, and athletic styling to a family crossover without giving up everyday usefulness.
The bottom line: If you want a used Highlander that feels more engaging than the typical family SUV and you value stable pricing, the 2014 is a sensible target. If you are especially price-sensitive, you should still shop carefully and compare condition, accident history, and equipment level across listings, because the best value will usually come from the right trim in the right shape rather than from the cheapest badge alone.
