CarGurus Analysis: 2017 Toyota 4Runner

Summary
With 94 currently listed for sale near Los Angeles, CA and an average price of $32,404, 20.2% of 2017 Toyota 4Runners for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 Toyota 4Runner 4.5 / 5 stars.
90.4% of 2017 4Runner models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2017 Toyota 4Runner stands out as a rugged midsize SUV that stayed true to its body-on-frame roots at a time when many rivals had moved to car-based construction. It was part of a long-running generation known for continuous improvements rather than sweeping changes, and by this point the 4Runner had already built a reputation for durability, resale value, and off-road capability. That combination makes it appealing to buyers who want a vehicle that feels tough and purposeful rather than polished and soft-riding.
For 2017, the 4Runner’s appeal was also tied to its practical equipment and trail-ready character. The generation offered a 278 horsepower 4.0-liter DOHC V6 on most models, while the Trail trim had standard features such as an electronic locking rear differential, Crawl Control, and a Multi-Terrain Select system. All 4WD models got Downhill Assist Control and Toyota’s A-TRAC active traction control, and the 4Runner also included power windows and door locks, a multi-information display, and 10 cup holders. Available features included XM Satellite Radio, Bluetooth, a JBL audio system, leather seats, and heated front seats.
At the same time, the 2017 Toyota 4Runner was not trying to be the most refined choice in its class. The source notes poor on-road handling and fuel economy among its drawbacks, and owners similarly point to its city-driving manners as a weakness. Even so, for shoppers who value rugged construction, long-term value, and genuine off-road ability, the 2017 4Runner remains distinctive.

I thought this was a very solid purchase. Ive owned the vehicle for about 5 years and have been happy with the purchase. My only complaint is that I thought the sound system could have been a little better. It was still good but I like to listen to my music loud so it would most likely be satisfactory for most people

4Runner is the last of the real SUV’s….in a world flooded with cutesy crossovers and bloated luxury barges, the 4Runner stands alone as a rugged, do it all vehicle. Simplicity and quality will always outshine “tech” and disposability.

Is the 2017 Toyota 4Runner reliable?
Owners rate it 4.5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback highlights reliability, long-lasting value, and a dependable feel over time. That lines up with the 4Runner’s reputation for rugged construction and durability, which is exactly what many used buyers want from a truck-based SUV.
For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is finding a vehicle that has been used hard, so condition and maintenance history matter a lot.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Toyota 4Runner?
At 59.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report so you can separate clean examples from those with prior damage. Then prioritize a thorough pre-purchase inspection, especially if the SUV has seen off-road use or heavy towing. Focus on overall condition, maintenance records, and signs of wear that could affect long-term ownership.

The current average of $27,186 sits slightly below last year's $27,846.
That kind of price movement suggests the market has eased a bit, which can help you buy at a more favorable point. For a future seller, the 4Runner’s strong reputation for durability and owner satisfaction should help support demand when it’s time to list. Even with some softening, this model year still has the kind of appeal that tends to hold value better than many SUVs.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2017 Toyota 4Runner or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 31.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 59.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.37% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2016 if:
- At $24,401, the 2016 costs less than the current year's $27,186 average.
- It adds useful updates while keeping the same rugged, off-road-focused character.
The bottom line: If you want the stronger current-market balance of price, inventory, and owner satisfaction, the 2017 is the better primary choice. If your priority is spending less upfront, the 2016 is the smarter secondary path and still gives you the core 4Runner strengths.
