CarGurus Analysis: 2020 Toyota 4Runner
overall

Summary
With 154 currently listed for sale near Los Angeles, CA and an average price of $36,612, 29.2% of 2020 Toyota 4Runners for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2020 Toyota 4Runner 4.85 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 6.83 / 10.

Why it stands out
The 2020 Toyota 4Runner stands out as a vehicle built around capability rather than compromise. Even in its expensive Limited trim, it remains clearly purpose-built for tackling terrain, and it looks most at home when it is outside the typical car’s comfort zone. That makes it appealing to buyers who want a rugged SUV that feels ready for dusty cow paths or snowy mountain roads instead of polished pavement.
Toyota also gives the 2020 4Runner enough chrome and leather to market it as a rough-and-tumble luxury alternative, which broadens its appeal beyond pure off-road use. Its strengths include standard advanced safety features, a powerful engine, and off-road capability. The tradeoffs are just as clear: it is a poor value for money, returns poor fuel economy, and its interior materials feel cheap.

Love the color and the ability to do anything in this bad boy. Drives off road super smooth and easy, drives on paced road as smooth as the SR5. This is the perfect vehicle.

The perfect dinosaur for me! I chose this make and model specifically for its older tech and build quality. Is it fast, no. Does it sip gas, nope. Does it feel solid, yes. This is my second one. The first is still running great at 20 years old. My only gripe is the type of OEM step bars. Easy to get in, but not the best for getting out of the vehicle. They will be swapped. Problem solved. This is a popular platform but it isn't the right vehicle for everyone. If you are considering a 4Runner, watch the Care Care Nut's review of the 5th gen 4Runners FIRST. Know what you are buying. I have had a Lexus and 2 different 4 Runners. These are the best vehicles I have ever owned and that’s comparing them to Volvo, Dodge, Jeep, and BMW. The only thing I have a problem with is gas mileage but that’s what you get when you have 4 wheel drive. It would be nice if it had the push button lift for the tail gate but no big deal. They are awesome vehicles. I am on my 4th Toyota/Lexus brand.

This 2020 4 Runner is a great choice. I have a very active lifestyle. I surf, snowboard, cycle and take my two dogs almost everywhere I go. So this vehicle is perfect for what I need. The SR5 Premium model has just enough nice features that it feels like your driving a luxury car minus the high price tag. If you are looking for a true goat of a truck I recommend this vehicle.

How much does the 2020 Toyota 4Runner cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $35,334 |
| Year-Round Low | $33,532 |
| Year-Round High | $35,955 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $35,956 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −1.73% |
Prices have softened 1.73% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 2,384 listings available, which gives you a solid pool of options to compare.
Is the 2020 Toyota 4Runner a good car?
Yes — the 2020 Toyota 4Runner earns a 4.85/5 user rating and a 6.83/10 expert rating. The model scores 8/10 across Performance and Form and function.
Owners consistently praise its ruggedness, reliability, and value retention, and many also highlight its comfort, safety features, and off-road capability. The trade-offs are familiar: it is a poor value for money, returns poor fuel economy, and its interior materials feel cheap.
If you want a rugged SUV that feels most at home on rough terrain rather than polished pavement, this year’s 4Runner fits that use case well. Even with its rough-and-ready character, 33.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals, so there is still room to shop selectively.
Is the 2020 Toyota 4Runner reliable?
Owners rate it 4.85/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
Owners describe it as rugged, reliable, and durable, with language that points to a vehicle people expect to count on over time. The expert evaluation also emphasizes the engine’s longevity and the 4Runner’s tough body-on-frame construction, both of which support its dependability story.
That said, used buyers should still pay close attention to maintenance history and overall wear, since long-term ownership risk is tied more to condition and upkeep than to the model’s reputation alone.
What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Toyota 4Runner?
At 69.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a careful inspection of bodywork, alignment, and signs of prior repair. Because this SUV is often bought for rugged use, condition matters as much as mileage, especially on suspension, tires, and interior wear. If you are comparing multiple listings, focus on the ones with clean records and evidence of consistent maintenance.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The lineup includes SR5, SR5 Premium, TRD Off-Road, TRD Off-Road Premium, TRD Pro, Limited, Nightshade Special Edition, and Venture Special Edition. Lower trims come standard with cloth, while the SR5 Premium and TRD Off-Road Premium come standard with SofTex material; the Limited adds leather upholstery and a more comfort-focused feel.
- Powertrain: Every trim uses a 4-liter V6 with a 5-speed automatic transmission, rated at 270 horsepower and 278 pound-feet of torque. It is built for steady, lumbering progress rather than quick acceleration, and the engine’s longevity is a strength.
- Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense P includes adaptive cruise control, lane-departure alert, a pre-collision system with pedestrian detection, and automatic high beams. It comes with eight standard airbags, but the lane-departure alert is reactive rather than a more active lane-keeping system.
- Infotainment: The 4Runner uses an 8-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. It also supports Amazon Alexa, Bluetooth, a single USB media port in SR5 and TRD Off-Road trims, and available features such as a JBL stereo and navigation.
- Fuel efficiency: The EPA estimates 16 mpg city, 19 highway, and 17 combined.
Which 2020 Toyota 4Runner trim should I buy?
The 2020 Toyota 4Runner is offered in 8 trim levels: SR5, SR5 Premium, TRD Off-Road, TRD Off-Road Premium, TRD Pro, Limited, Nightshade Special Edition, and Venture Special Edition.
Here's the short version:
- SR5: This is the entry point, and it gives you the core 4Runner formula without the extra cost of the higher trims. It is the trim to consider if you want the lowest starting price and are comfortable with the more basic cloth interior and simpler equipment.
- SR5 Premium: This is the best-value choice for many shoppers because it adds a more upscale feel without moving all the way into the pricier specialty trims. The standard SofTex material makes it a smarter pick if you want a nicer cabin but still want to stay relatively close to the base model.
- TRD Off-Road: Choose this if you want the 4Runner’s off-road character to be the priority. It is the trim that leans hardest into trail use, and it is the right fit if you care more about capability than comfort extras.
- TRD Off-Road Premium: This is the better choice if you want the off-road hardware and a more comfortable interior. It combines the trail-focused setup with the upgraded cabin treatment, making it a strong middle ground for buyers who want both utility and livability.
- TRD Pro: This is the most specialized choice for buyers who want the most rugged, off-road-focused version in the lineup. It is the trim to buy if you want the most capability-oriented 4Runner and are willing to pay for it.
- Limited: This is the comfort-first trim. It adds leather upholstery and a more luxury-leaning presentation, so it suits you best if you want the 4Runner’s rugged image with a more upscale cabin.
- Nightshade Special Edition: This trim is for shoppers who want a stealthier look with plenty of blacked-out trim pieces. It is more about appearance than a major capability change.
- Venture Special Edition: This is the style-and-utility special edition, with 17-inch TRD wheels and a standard Yakima Megawarrior roof rack. It is a good fit if you want a distinctive look and some added adventure-ready equipment.
Toyota Safety Sense P is standard, but the lane-departure alert system is more reactive than a true lane-keeping assist setup.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Toyota 4Runner?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you can shop with some leverage if you are patient.
- Deal availability: 33.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 2,384 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 1.73% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 69.3% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $33,532, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2020 Toyota 4Runner's resale value?
The current average of $35,334 sits slightly below last year's $35,956.
That modest decline suggests the market has softened a bit, which can help you buy more carefully now, but it also means a future seller may not see rapid appreciation. Even so, the 4Runner’s reputation for durability and strong demand among buyers who want rugged utility should help support values better than many mainstream SUVs.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.85/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2020 Toyota 4Runner safe?
The 2020 Toyota 4Runner earns four-star ratings overall from NHTSA and three-star ratings in rollover testing, while IIHS gave it Good scores in all crash tests except the small overlap front: driver-side test, where it scored Marginal.
It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.
Toyota Safety Sense P is standard and includes adaptive cruise control, lane-departure alert, a pre-collision system with pedestrian detection, and automatic high beams. The 4Runner also comes with eight standard airbags.
The main caveat is the Marginal IIHS result in the small overlap front: driver-side test, along with the SUV’s high center of gravity and reactive lane-departure alert system.
Should I buy a 2020 Toyota 4Runner or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2020 if:
- 33.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 69.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 1.73% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.85/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It adds standard Toyota Safety Sense P and an updated 8-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
Consider the 2019 if:
- At $31,971, the 2019 costs less than the current year's $35,334 average.
- It offers proven off-road focus with a more old-school, utility-first character.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $37,202, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $35,334 average.
- It leans into rugged utility with strong reliability and resale appeal.
The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price, features, and availability, the 2020 is the sensible pick. If you are especially price-sensitive, the 2019 can save you money, while the 2021 makes sense if you are willing to pay more for a newer-year alternative.
