CarGurus Analysis: 2017 Ford Explorer

Summary
With 322 currently listed for sale near Los Angeles, CA and an average price of $13,987, 19.9% of 2017 Ford Explorers for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 Ford Explorer 4.8 / 5 stars.
72.4% of 2017 Explorer models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2017 Ford Explorer stands out as a midsize SUV that blends everyday comfort with a more engaging driving character than many buyers expect. In the fifth generation, Ford moved the Explorer onto a D4 platform and gave it a front-wheel-drive-based layout with all-wheel drive available, turning it into a family-friendly crossover. That change also brought a more car-like feel, and the model’s later-year reputation is helped by the fact that Ford refreshed its styling and in-car tech in 2017.
It also offers a broad spread of powertrains and equipment. The Explorer could be had with a 290-horsepower 3.5-liter V6 in 2011, and later fifth-generation models added a 2.0-liter EcoBoost turbocharged four-cylinder, a 3.5-liter Duratec V6, and a 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 twin-turbo. Safety and convenience features were a strong part of the package too, with available BLIS blind spot information system with rear cross traffic alert, forward-collision warning with emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, active parking assist, and rain-sensing wipers. Buyers also got modern infotainment systems, including Ford’s SYNC system, and the cabin could be equipped with heated and ventilated front seats and a rear-seat DVD entertainment system.
For shoppers, the appeal is that the 2017 Ford Explorer is one of the more complete versions of this generation: it has useful space, available all-wheel drive, and enough available technology to feel well equipped. At the same time, it is not the class leader in every area. The source notes that the fifth-generation Explorer rarely ranked at the top of its class, and that rivals were more efficient, more reliable, more spacious, or more luxurious depending on the comparison. It also has an average or below-average reliability record overall, so a careful test drive is still a smart idea.

How much does the 2017 Ford Explorer cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $13,673 |
| Year-Round Low | $13,673 |
| Year-Round High | $14,708 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $14,707 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −7.03% |
Prices have softened 7.03% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 5,261 listings available, which suggests solid inventory for comparison shopping.
Is the 2017 Ford Explorer a good car?
Yes — the 4.8/5 user rating points to strong owner satisfaction. Drivers consistently praise the smooth ride, spacious interior, and impressive features, and many also like the power and handling, especially with the EcoBoost engine. For you, that makes this a strong fit if you want a midsize SUV with everyday comfort, useful space, and a more engaging driving character than many rivals. 31.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals, so there is still room to shop selectively.
Is the 2017 Ford Explorer reliable?
Owners rate it 4.8/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The user feedback also points to a dependable ownership experience, with drivers highlighting the Explorer’s smooth ride and strong overall appeal over time. That said, the model’s reliability record is described as average or below average overall, so you should still approach used examples with care.
For used buyers, the main long-term risk is ending up with a vehicle that has been maintained inconsistently or has hidden wear that only shows up after purchase.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Ford Explorer?
At 65.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report so you can separate clean examples from those with accident records. After that, prioritize a thorough pre-purchase inspection, especially if the listing price looks unusually attractive. Focus your condition check on signs of prior bodywork, uneven wear, and anything that suggests the vehicle has had a harder life than the listing implies.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Ford Explorer?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you stay disciplined.
- Deal availability: 31.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 5,261 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.03% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 65.1% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $13,673, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 Ford Explorer's resale value?
The current average of $13,673 sits slightly below last year's $14,707.
That price movement suggests the market has softened, which can limit upside if you plan to sell soon. If you buy now, you should expect resale value to depend heavily on condition, mileage, and whether the vehicle has a clean history. Well-kept examples should hold up better than average because shoppers still respond to the Explorer’s space and feature content.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.8/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2017 Ford Explorer or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 31.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 65.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.03% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.8/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2016 if:
- At $12,029, the 2016 costs less than the current year's $13,673 average.
- Ford refreshed it with updated styling and more equipment.
The bottom line: If you want the better-balanced shopping opportunity, the 2017 is the stronger primary path because it combines a lower current price, solid deal availability, and strong owner satisfaction. If your priority is spending less upfront, the 2016 is the better secondary path and may be worth a closer look.
