Why it stands out
With standard all-wheel drive and affordable tech, the 2017 Subaru Impreza stands out as a sensible choice in a segment where all-wheel drive sedans and hatchbacks are relatively uncommon. It is also described as affordable, safe, and practical, which gives it broad appeal for buyers who want everyday usefulness without moving to a crossover.

My wife and I were both civic owners for 13+ years each. She got a Crosstrek a few years back, which has been really good to us so far. So when my civic started overstaying its welcome I decided to include subaru in my search. Also test drove a honda civic and toyota corolla. While the Subaru doest exactly have the most potent acceleration- slowest of this group - it is the most fun to drive, in my opinion. The sport trim has a differently-tuned suspension and a tighter steering ratio. Combine these features with the all wheel drive and what you get is a car that you just want to drive. Subaru also got their act together with the interior. The visibility on the subaru is great (corolla is good too). However, the civics rear visibility was lacking because of the cars aggressively sloped rear end. Plus, the subaru just feels way more solidly built than the corolla or civic.

Its hard to see the oil pressure and the engine status of the car. This may be obvious to the car computer. But this is a user experience.

| Current Average Price | $12,008 |

| Year-Round High | $13,019.72 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $13,027 |

Prices have softened 7.82% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 806 listings available, which suggests you should have a reasonable amount of inventory to compare.
If you find a listing below $12,015.05, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2017 Subaru Impreza a good car?
Generally — 4.33/5. The expert rating is 8/10, and the model scores 9/10 across Form and function, Cost effectiveness, and Safety.
The 2017 Impreza is positioned as a sensible choice if you want a sedan or hatchback with standard all-wheel drive, and it is framed as affordable, safe, and practical. It is also described as less refined than some rivals, so its appeal is strongest when you value everyday usefulness, confidence, and value over luxury polish.
The model has 30.0% good or great deals, which points to a market where you can still find worthwhile listings.
Is the 2017 Subaru Impreza reliable?
Owners rate it 4.33/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
The Impreza is presented as a practical, confidence-focused car with standard all-wheel drive and a strong emphasis on everyday usability. The expert assessment also highlights that it is affordable and safe, which supports the case for dependable day-to-day ownership.
Its powertrain is described as a 2-liter, 152-hp, 4-cylinder boxer engine paired with a CVT, and the write-up notes that the CVT issue with slow shifting between Reverse and Drive seems to have been resolved for 2017. That said, the engine is also described as underpowered, so long-term ownership risk is more about performance expectations than outright durability.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Subaru Impreza?
At 57.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has been in a collision. Focus on body condition, panel alignment, and signs of repair quality, since the market includes a sizable share of cars with prior damage. It also makes sense to verify that the safety and driver-assistance features work as expected.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: In 2.0i trim, the car starts with a 5-speed stick shift, cloth seats, a 4-speaker sound system, and manual climate control. Premium adds an automatic transmission, while Limited can be ordered with leather, a moonroof, and upgraded infotainment.
- Powertrain: The only engine choice is Subaru’s 2-liter, 152-hp, 4-cylinder boxer engine, paired with a CVT. It is tuned for commuting rather than quick acceleration, and the write-up notes that it can feel underpowered on highway on-ramps and uphill.
- Safety package: EyeSight is the named driver-assistance suite. It can alert drivers who stray from their lanes, automatically hit the brakes in an emergency, and adjust cruise control automatically to follow the car in front. On Premium, it adds blind-spot detection and steering-responsive fog lights.
- Infotainment: Every 2017 Impreza comes standard with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. The touchscreen gives you access to music, podcasts, and navigation, and the top trim can be ordered with upgraded infotainment.
- Fuel efficiency: The CVT helps the Impreza get fuel economy as good as 38 mpg highway and 28 city.
Which 2017 Subaru Impreza trim should I buy?
The 2017 Subaru Impreza is offered in 4 trim levels: 2.0i, Premium, Sport, Limited.
Here's the short version:
- Base trim: The 2.0i is the most stripped-down version, with cloth seats, a 4-speaker sound system, manual climate control, and a 5-speed stick shift. It is the trim that most clearly shows the car’s budget-oriented side.
- Sweet-spot trim: Premium is the best value pick if you want a more complete daily driver, since it adds an automatic transmission and can be paired with EyeSight, blind-spot detection, and steering-responsive fog lights.
- Premium/top trim: Limited is the most upscale choice here, with leather, a moonroof, and upgraded infotainment for buyers who want the most comfort and convenience.
- Off-road trim: Sport adds torque vectoring and an optional stick shift, but it is still best understood as the more driver-focused choice rather than a daily-driver upgrade.
EyeSight is available on Premium, and it brings blind-spot detection and steering-responsive fog lights with it.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Subaru Impreza?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you can shop carefully without expecting a deep bargain on every listing.
- Deal availability: 30.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 806 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.82% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 57.7% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $12,015.05, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 Subaru Impreza's resale value?
The current average of $12,008 sits slightly below last year's $13,027.
That price movement suggests the model has already absorbed some depreciation, which can help future resale stability if you buy at the right price. Because the market has softened, your upside as a buyer improves when you focus on lower-priced, clean-history examples. A well-kept Impreza should remain appealing to shoppers who want standard all-wheel drive in a sedan or hatchback.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.33/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2017 Subaru Impreza safe?
It’s a Top Safety Pick Plus from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration gives it a top five-star safety rating.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
EyeSight is the named driver-assistance suite, and it includes lane-departure alerts, automatic emergency braking, and adaptive cruise control. On Premium, it also brings blind-spot detection and steering-responsive fog lights.
One caveat is that the adaptive cruise behavior is described as unusual: if the car remains stopped for more than 3 seconds, the system turns off and the car starts to roll forward, so you need to stay attentive in traffic.
Should I buy a 2017 Subaru Impreza or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 30.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 57.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.82% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.33/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- It stands out as one of the few sedan or hatchback choices with standard all-wheel drive, while also offering affordable tech and strong safety.
The bottom line: If you want a practical sedan or hatchback with standard all-wheel drive, the 2017 Impreza is a strong primary choice, especially if safety and everyday usefulness matter most. If you are highly price-sensitive, focus on clean-history listings near the low end of the range and compare them carefully against other years before you commit.
