CarGurus Analysis: 2016 Volkswagen Beetle

Summary
With 245 currently listed for sale and an average price of $15,404.00, 30.2% of 2016 Volkswagen Beetles for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2016 Volkswagen Beetle 4.5 / 5 stars.

Why it stands out
The 2016 Volkswagen Beetle stands out because it blends retro style with a more modern, practical package than the original car that inspired it. By this generation, the Beetle had grown noticeably longer and wider, with a fraction lower stance and a more coupe-like profile, while still keeping the familiar front-engine, front-wheel-drive layout. That extra size brought a roomier interior and significantly more trunk space, and the cabin was described as having a premium ambience. It also remained a distinctive choice for buyers who wanted something stylish and affordable rather than purely utilitarian.
For 2016, the Beetle’s lineup included the 1.8T model with a 1.8-liter turbocharged engine, and the diesel version had been dropped. The car’s equipment and character were part of its appeal, especially because the generation had already gained independent rear suspension across the range and had received a comprehensive update with new bumpers, a revised dashboard, and equipment upgrades. Volkswagen also offered more personality-driven versions during this era, including the Dune model with a raised ride height and bespoke styling details, though those were part of the broader generation rather than this specific year.
The Beetle’s strengths were its unique looks, charm, and sensible running costs, but it was not especially practical and visibility was not great. Reliability was another caution point, since the model did not have a standout record and engines and timing chains could be problematic. Even so, the 2016 Volkswagen Beetle remained appealing as a characterful compact car that delivered retro design with enough modern comfort and usability to make it more than just a style exercise.

A Volkswagen Beetle has been my dream car ever since I was little and I have 0 complaints. It’s speedy, very roomy for its size, the trunk has a lot of space too. It has all the features you need in a car. I’d recommend this car to anyone!

Love the color and the pep it has. However while is had no accidents the left front had a scrap that I have to repair. But I’m happy with the car…:the low mileage and it’s condition.

|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $15,406 |
| Year-Round Low | $13,991.70 |
| Year-Round High | $15,406.71 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $14,291 |
| Change vs. Last Year | +7.80% |
Prices are up 7.80% year-over-year — a sign of continued demand for this model year.
There are 248 listings available, which gives you some room to compare options before you buy.
If you find a listing below $13,991.70, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2016 Volkswagen Beetle a good car?
Yes — the 2016 Volkswagen Beetle earns a 4.5/5 user rating, which supports its appeal as a distinctive compact car. The overview points to a model that blends retro style with a more modern, practical package, including a roomier interior, more trunk space, and a premium-feeling cabin. It also fits buyers who want something stylish and affordable rather than purely utilitarian. 27.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals, so there are still some attractive opportunities if you shop carefully.
Is the 2016 Volkswagen Beetle reliable?
Owners rate it 4.5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The overview also flags reliability as a caution point, noting that the model does not have a standout record and that engines and timing chains can be problematic. For used buyers, that means long-term ownership risk is worth taking seriously, especially if maintenance history is incomplete.
What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Volkswagen Beetle?
At 47.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and confirm whether any reported damage was repaired properly. Put a pre-purchase inspection at the top of your list, with extra attention to mechanical condition and signs of past bodywork. Focus on overall condition, because the Beetle’s appeal depends heavily on whether it has been maintained well and kept free of hidden issues.

What is the 2016 Volkswagen Beetle's resale value?
The current average of $15,406 sits slightly above last year's $14,291.
That price movement suggests the Beetle has held buyer interest well enough to support stronger used values. If you buy carefully and keep the car in good condition, you may be better positioned when it is time to sell. The model’s distinctive styling and broad appeal to shoppers looking for character can help sustain demand.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2016 Volkswagen Beetle or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2016 if:
- 27.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 47.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices are up 7.80% year-over-year.
- Owners rate it 4.5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2015 if:
- At $13,039, the 2015 costs less than the current year's $15,406 average.
- It offers three engine choices and a more flexible trim range.
The bottom line: Choose the 2016 if you want the stronger current-market benchmark and are willing to shop carefully for condition and history. If your priority is lower upfront cost, the 2015 is the better value-oriented path, especially if you want to spend less while still getting the Beetle’s retro character.
