The expert notes describe it as a model with a long history of pushing the envelope, and the cost-effectiveness commentary says it has historically been a class leader for reliability and should retain value well. Toyota also included a maintenance-friendly ownership experience in the broader package, though used buyers should still verify service history and watch for signs of wear tied to age and mileage.

What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Toyota Sienna?

At 54.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a close inspection of body panels, interior wear, and any signs of prior repair. Because this model is often bought for family duty, pay extra attention to sliding doors, seat operation, and cabin electronics. A thorough test drive should also confirm that the drivetrain feels smooth and that the vehicle’s convenience features work as expected.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base L trim already includes automatic headlights, windshield-wiper heaters, tri-zone automatic climate control, a rear-view camera, Siri Eyes Free, and 17-inch alloys, while the LE adds heated side mirrors, power-sliding doors, an 8-way power driver’s seat, an upgraded stereo, a 7-inch touchscreen, privacy glass, and app-based navigation support. The SE adds a stiffer sport suspension, tighter steering, a power liftgate, leather upholstery and steering wheel, heated front seats, and sport-themed exterior details, while the XLE and Limited move further upmarket with more comfort and luxury equipment.
• Powertrain: Every Sienna uses a 3.5-liter V6 with a 6-speed automatic transmission, and the setup delivers 266 hp and 245 lb-ft of torque. Front-wheel-drive versions are rated at 18 mpg city and 25 mpg highway, while all-wheel drive lowers efficiency.
• Safety package: The available driver-assistance content includes blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise, and forward-collision warning. Some features are tied to packages or specific trims, and the AWD versions do not get the Advanced Technology package.
• Infotainment: Base models use a 6.1-inch touchscreen, while higher trims move to a 7.0-inch screen and enhanced connectivity. Siri Eyes Free is standard, and the rear entertainment system with Driver Easy Speak is a major family-friendly upgrade.
• Fuel efficiency: Front-wheel-drive versions return 18 mpg city and 25 mpg highway, with a combined EPA-estimated 21 mpg. All-wheel drive drops to 16 mpg city and 23 mpg highway, with a combined rating of 19 mpg.

Which 2016 Toyota Sienna trim should I buy?

The 2016 Toyota Sienna is offered in 6 trim levels: L, LE, SE, SE Premium, XLE, and Limited.

Here's the short version:

• L: This is the value starting point if you want the essentials without paying for extras. You still get a long list of standard equipment, including tri-zone climate control, a rear-view camera, Siri Eyes Free, and 17-inch alloys.
• LE: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds the most useful everyday upgrades, including power-sliding doors, an 8-way power driver’s seat, a larger touchscreen, and better audio. It also brings app-based navigation support and more convenience-focused features without jumping too far in price.
• SE: Choose this if you want the sportier suspension tuning and a more upscale feel, along with leather upholstery, heated front seats, and a power liftgate. It suits you best if ride feel matters as much as family practicality.
• SE Premium: This is the feature-rich version of the SE, adding blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, a rear-seat entertainment system, and navigation. It makes sense if you want the sportier chassis setup but also need more family tech.
• XLE: This trim shifts away from the SE’s sportier character and leans into comfort and convenience, with features like keyless entry and ignition, a power passenger seat, and rear quarter windows that open. It’s a good fit if you want a more traditional luxury-minivan feel.
• Limited: This is the top luxury choice, with premium leather, navigation, parking sensors, a heated steering wheel, LED running lights, auto power-folding mirrors, and a JBL audio system. It’s the right pick if you want the most upscale Sienna experience.

Safety features such as blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise, and forward-collision warning are available on select trims or packages, so check each listing carefully.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Toyota Sienna?

This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you have room to shop carefully without rushing.

• Deal availability: 31.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,478 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have held steady compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 54.7% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $16,192, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2016 Toyota Sienna's resale value?

The current average of $17,630 sits slightly above last year's $17,511.

That small increase suggests the Sienna has held its value well rather than swinging sharply in either direction. For a future seller, that kind of stability is helpful because it points to steady buyer interest and less risk of a sudden price drop. The model’s strong reputation for family utility and owner satisfaction should continue to support demand.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2016 Toyota Sienna safe?

The 2016 Toyota Sienna earns top overall scores from both NHTSA and IIHS, though NHTSA gave it a second-highest rating for total frontal crash and IIHS gave it a second-highest rating for small overlap frontal crash. It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

The available driver-assistance content includes blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise, and forward-collision warning. Those features are not uniformly standard across every trim, so you should confirm exactly what a specific listing includes. The safety package is strong overall, but you should still pay attention to trim-level differences and verify the presence of the options you want.

Should I buy a 2016 Toyota Sienna or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2016 if:

• 31.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 54.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have held steady compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2016 stands out for its broad utility, strong technology offering, and family-focused practicality.

Consider the 2015 if:

• At $15,566, the 2015 costs less than the current year's $17,630 average.
• It is described as the best version of the Sienna yet, with broad improvements and especially strong safety gains.

The bottom line: If you want the stronger current-market balance of price, inventory, and owner satisfaction, the 2016 is the better all-around pick. If your priority is spending less up front, the 2015 is the more budget-friendly alternative and still brings many of the Sienna’s core strengths.

How does the 2016 Toyota Sienna compare to the 2016 Honda Odyssey?

Our experts score the 2016 Toyota Sienna 7.7/10 and the 2016 Honda Odyssey 8.2/10. The Odyssey earns the higher expert score, but the Sienna offers a stronger average used price and slightly better deal availability. The Sienna also brings a more powerful V6, while the Odyssey is more efficient and has a lower average used price. If you want the better value in the market today, the Sienna has the edge; if you want the higher expert-rated minivan, the Odyssey is the stronger pick.
