Why it stands out
The 2016 Toyota Sienna stands out as a minivan that already offered an impressive suite of technology, with Siri Eyes Free adding voice activation for iPhone users. That feature gives the Sienna extra utility and a bit of added safety, making it especially appealing to drivers who want family-hauling practicality without giving up modern convenience.
Beyond that tech upgrade, the Sienna’s appeal comes from its long-running reputation as a leader in the minivan segment. The available owner feedback reinforces that image, pointing to comfort, spaciousness, and a wide variety of features as major strengths. Some drivers also praised the value and more upscale feel of the limited edition models, especially the sound system and interior design.
There are a couple of tradeoffs to keep in mind. Some owners noted that engine noise can be noticeable during acceleration, and getting in and out of the car seats may be challenging for some. Even so, the 2016 Toyota Sienna remains distinctive for combining family-friendly space with a strong feature set and a useful voice-control upgrade.

The features are great especially the right blind spot display. This car is a great value. The only thing missing is leather seats. I can’t compare it to any other models since this one is a special edition.

We looked at the Honda and Toyota minivans. We ended up purchasing the Sienna. It is a great vehicle, great value, very comfortable. Prior to purchasing the vehicle the two negative reviews I found were the engine is loud when accelerating and the car seats are hard to get in and out. I did not even notice the engine noise so that is a non-issue for me but the car seats were a little tricky. We leave our car seats in for extended periods of time (only take out to clean) so its really not a big deal. If we took them out every day I could see how this would be annoying but the fact that they essentially live in the car I really dont care. All the extra features are really nice too, automatic doors with buttons on the key fob, build in sun screens, electronics are really nice and responsive, the interior space and head room is massive. We really enjoy this vehicle and will have it for a long time.

Is the 2016 Toyota Sienna a good car?
Yes — the 2016 Toyota Sienna earns a 5/5 user rating and a 7.67/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Form and function at 9/10.
Drivers consistently praise its comfort, spaciousness, and overall value, and many also like the luxury feel of the higher trims. The user feedback also points to a strong feature set and a cabin that works well for family use. In the overview, you get a minivan aimed squarely at families who want space, comfort, and convenience features in one package. With 29.9% of listings marked as good or great deals, you still have room to shop selectively.
Is the 2016 Toyota Sienna reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
User feedback points to a vehicle that feels dependable and well suited to long-term family use, with owners repeatedly highlighting comfort and value. The expert evaluation also describes the Sienna as a class leader for reliability historically, even while noting a slight recent dip. It also emphasizes that the model remains a strong choice for buyers who want something they can count on over time. Toyota’s maintenance and ownership support is reinforced by the note that the first scheduled maintenance visit is on the house.
For used buyers, the main long-term risk is making sure prior wear, recall history, and maintenance records are clean before you commit.
What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Toyota Sienna?
At 52.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you are considering a higher-mileage example or a van with family-duty wear. Focus on signs of interior use, seat operation, sliding-door function, and any evidence of prior body repair. Because accident history is common enough here, condition matters as much as price.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base L trim includes a long list of features such as automatic headlights, windshield-wiper heaters, tri-zone automatic climate control, a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, a rear-view camera in a 6.1-inch touchscreen, and Siri Eyes Free. The SE trim adds a stiffer sport suspension, while the Limited brings more luxury-oriented equipment.
- Powertrain: Every version uses a 3.5-liter V6 with a 6-speed automatic transmission. FWD models are rated at 18 mpg city and 25 mpg highway, while AWD drops to 16 mpg city and 23 mpg highway.
- Safety package: Available driver-assistance features include blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise, and forward-collision warning. Some of these features are tied to packages or specific trims, and the Advanced Technology package is not offered on AWD Siennas.
- Infotainment: Base models use a 6.1-inch touchscreen, while higher trims move to a 7.0-inch screen with enhanced connectivity. Wireless CarPlay and Android Auto are not mentioned.
- Fuel efficiency: FWD versions return 18 mpg city, 25 highway, and 21 combined, while AWD versions return 16 city, 23 highway, and 19 combined.
Which 2016 Toyota Sienna trim should I buy?
The 2016 Toyota Sienna is offered in 6 trim levels: L, LE, SE, SE Premium, XLE, and Limited.
Here's the short version:
- Base trim: The L trim is the value play, but it lacks the richer comfort and convenience upgrades found higher up the range.
- Sweet-spot trim: The LE is the best balance for many shoppers because it adds power sliding doors, an upgraded stereo, a larger touchscreen, and more everyday convenience.
- Premium/top trim: The Limited is the most upscale choice, with premium leather, navigation, a heated steering wheel, parking sensors, and a JBL audio system.
- Off-road trim: None of the trims are aimed at off-road use, so there is no real daily-driver caution here.
The safety-package note to keep in mind is that blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise, and forward-collision warning are not universally standard across the lineup.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Toyota Sienna?
This is a moderate buyer’s market, so you can shop selectively without expecting deep distress pricing.
- Deal availability: 29.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,075 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.46% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 52.7% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $16,191.30, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2016 Toyota Sienna's resale value?
The current average of $17,197 sits slightly below last year's $17,630.
That price movement suggests the market has eased a bit, which can help you buy more confidently now if you plan to keep the van for several years. For a future seller, the softer current pricing means there is less immediate upside than before, but the model still benefits from steady family-vehicle demand. Strong feature content and broad appeal can help support value retention if the van is well maintained.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2016 Toyota Sienna safe?
Both the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) have awarded their top scores overall for the Sienna, with only the NHTSA’s total frontal crash and the IIHS’s small overlap frontal-crash tests receiving the second-highest ratings.
It earns a 8/10 safety score from our experts.
The available safety equipment includes traction and stability control, a full airbag suite with driver’s knee and curtain airbags, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise, and forward-collision warning. Some of those features are optional or package-dependent rather than standard on every trim. The main caveat is that the frontal crash results were not perfect, so you should pay close attention to trim and equipment when shopping used.
Should I buy a 2016 Toyota Sienna or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2016 if:
- 29.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 52.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.46% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2016 keeps the Sienna’s family-friendly space, comfort, and feature-rich appeal.
Consider the 2015 if:
- At $15,385, the 2015 costs less than the current year's $17,197 average.
- It stands out for major upgrades in safety and handling.
The bottom line: If you want the stronger current-market balance of price, inventory, and owner satisfaction, the 2016 is the better default choice. If your priority is saving money up front, the 2015 is the smarter value path and still brings many of the Sienna’s core strengths.
