How much does the 2016 Jeep Cherokee cost?

Is the 2016 Jeep Cherokee a good car?

Generally — the 2016 Jeep Cherokee earns a 4.1/5 user rating and a 7.8/10 expert rating, which points to a model that many shoppers find appealing. The Cherokee’s appeal is strongest if you want a vehicle that is comfortable and useful, yet also good to drive both on and off pavement. User feedback highlights its sporty feel, comfortable interior, and convenient size and features, while the overview emphasizes its broad everyday usefulness and standout capability. Good and great deals account for 31.6% of listings, so you still have room to shop selectively.

Is the 2016 Jeep Cherokee reliable?

Owners rate it 4.1/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction. User feedback points to a sporty feel, comfortable interior, and adequate power, while also noting concerns about build quality and engine and transmission reliability. The expert evaluation also flags the 9-speed automatic transmission as a source of troublesome shifts and reliability concerns, even though it can behave acceptably in daily use. For used buyers, that means long-term ownership risk is worth checking carefully, especially if the transmission history is unclear.

What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Jeep Cherokee?

At 61.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a thorough pre-purchase inspection, especially if the listing has any accident history. Focus on body condition, repair quality, and signs of wear that could affect long-term ownership costs. Because reliability concerns center on the transmission and build quality, it makes sense to pay close attention to how the vehicle drives and whether maintenance records are complete.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The Trailhawk is the rugged, “Trail Rated” version of the Cherokee, with revised bumpers, white-lettered tires, a lifted suspension, and a more capable off-road setup than the other variants. The base Sport, popular Latitude, and upscale Limited are also mentioned, and the Trailhawk stands apart for buyers who want the most capability.
• Powertrain: Standard equipment includes a 184-horsepower, 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine, while the optional 271-horsepower, 3.2-liter V6 is described as the better choice. The V6 is noted as the more efficient highway engine in the Trailhawk and matches the 4-cylinder’s 22-mpg combined rating.
• Safety package: The Cherokee includes a standard Park View reversing camera, while available driver-assistance features include blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic alert, lane-departure warning, and forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking. The Trailhawk also can be equipped with additional technology such as rain-sensing wipers and Uconnect Access services.
• Infotainment: The Trailhawk comes standard with a Uconnect 8.4 system featuring an 8.4-inch touchscreen, USB and SD card ports, Bluetooth calling and music streaming, Siri Eyes Free, Do Not Disturb, and Reply with Text Message features. Navigation is optional.
• Fuel efficiency: The Trailhawk’s 4-cylinder and V6 both carry a 22-mpg combined rating, and the V6 is described as the more efficient highway engine. Real-world driving in the expert review came in below the EPA estimate, so it’s worth checking ownership costs carefully.

Which 2016 Jeep Cherokee trim should I buy?

The 2016 Jeep Cherokee is offered in 4 trim levels: Sport, Latitude, Limited, Trailhawk.

Here's the short version:

• Sport: This is the entry point, so it makes sense if you want the Cherokee’s basic shape and utility at the lowest cost, but you should expect fewer features than the higher trims.
• Latitude: This is the most balanced choice for many shoppers because it adds more everyday convenience and comfort without jumping all the way to the top of the range.
• Limited: Choose this if you want a more upscale feel and more equipment, especially if comfort and features matter more to you than off-road hardware.
• Trailhawk: This is the best-value trim if you want the Cherokee’s full capability story, with the most serious off-road hardware, the most distinctive look, and the strongest personality in the lineup.

The Trailhawk also gets the most capable 4WD system and the most off-road-focused safety and traction setup in the range.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Jeep Cherokee?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.

• Deal availability: 31.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 2,329 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 8.66% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 61.1% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $10,167, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2016 Jeep Cherokee's resale value?

The current average of $10,167 sits slightly below last year's $11,131.

That price movement suggests the Cherokee has already absorbed some depreciation, which can help future sellers if the market stabilizes. If you buy well and keep the vehicle in good condition, you may be starting from a more favorable value position than a year ago. Still, resale will depend heavily on condition, maintenance history, and whether the transmission and other known concerns are documented.

Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.1/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2016 Jeep Cherokee safe?

The 2016 Jeep Cherokee earns a four-star overall rating from the federal government and a Marginal rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety in the small overlap frontal impact test. It earns Good ratings in all other IIHS assessments plus a Superior rating for front crash prevention.

It earns a 6/10 safety score from our experts.

The Cherokee includes a standard Park View reversing camera, and available safety tech includes blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic alert, lane-departure warning, and forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking. One important caveat is the weak small-overlap result, so you should weigh crash performance carefully if safety is a top priority.

Should I buy a 2016 Jeep Cherokee or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2016 if:

• 31.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 61.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 8.66% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.1/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
• The Trailhawk stands out as a comfort-and-capability SUV that can handle both daily driving and serious off-pavement use.

The bottom line: The 2016 Cherokee makes the most sense if you want a capable, comfortable SUV with a distinctive personality and you’re willing to shop carefully for condition and history. If you’re more price-sensitive, the softened market and decent deal share make this a good year to compare listings closely and focus on the best-maintained example rather than the cheapest one.

How does the 2016 Jeep Cherokee compare to the 2016 Ford Escape?

Our experts score the 2016 Jeep Cherokee 7.8/10 and the 2016 Ford Escape 7.2/10.

The Cherokee comes across as the more distinctive choice if you want stronger capability and a more adventurous personality, while the Escape is positioned as the more conventional alternative. The Cherokee also has the higher average used price in the comparison, but it offers a stronger expert score and a more specialized Trailhawk setup. If you want the better value on paper, the Escape’s lower average used price and larger listing pool may appeal more, but the Cherokee is the one to choose if capability matters more than mainstream appeal.
