Used 2016 Jeep Cherokee for Sale nearAustin, TX

How much does the 2016 Jeep Cherokee cost?

Prices have softened 8.28% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.

There are 2,382 listings available, which gives you a solid amount of inventory to compare.

Is the 2016 Jeep Cherokee a good car?

Generally — 4.1/5 from owners and 7.8/10 from experts point to a model that lands well for many used-SUV shoppers. The model scores 9/10 across Look and feel and Technology.

Drivers repeatedly praise the sporty feel, comfortable interior, and adequate power, along with conveniences like heated seats and a heated steering wheel. The overview also frames it as a compact SUV that balances comfort and utility while handling both daily driving and rougher conditions well.

That mix makes it especially appealing if you want a vehicle that feels useful in everyday life but still has real capability when the road gets rough. 30.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals, which suggests there are worthwhile opportunities if you shop carefully.

Is the 2016 Jeep Cherokee reliable?

Owners rate it 4.1/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction. User feedback also points to a dependable-feeling ownership experience for many drivers, with praise for the Cherokee’s comfort and everyday usefulness.

At the same time, some owners call out engine and transmission reliability concerns, and expert commentary also flags the transmission as a recurring issue to watch. The expert write-up describes the drivetrain as generally smooth enough in use, but it also notes that reliability research has been shaped by complaints about the 9-speed automatic.

The cost-effectiveness discussion adds that ownership costs are expected to be slightly higher than average, so a used example with a clean service history matters. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is that a neglected transmission or poorly maintained example can turn a good-value purchase into an expensive one.

What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Jeep Cherokee?

At 62.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle-history report and then prioritize a thorough inspection of the drivetrain, since transmission behavior is a known concern in the model’s ownership feedback and expert commentary. It also makes sense to focus on overall condition and maintenance records, especially if you want a Cherokee that can deliver the comfort-and-capability balance this model year is known for.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The Trailhawk is the rugged, “Trail Rated” version and stands apart with its off-road-focused hardware, while the broader Cherokee lineup includes Sport, Latitude, and Limited. Base-trim shoppers should pay close attention to feature gaps if they want more comfort or convenience equipment.
• Powertrain: The standard 2.4-liter four-cylinder is listed at 184 horsepower, while the optional 3.2-liter V6 is rated at 271 horsepower and is described as the better choice for many buyers. The V6 is also noted as the more efficient highway engine in the Trailhawk, and the 9-speed automatic is standard.
• Safety package: The Cherokee includes a standard Park View reversing camera, while available driver-assistance features include blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic alert, lane-departure warning, and forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking. The Trailhawk can also be equipped with additional safety-oriented options.
• Infotainment: The Trailhawk comes with a Uconnect 8.4 system featuring an 8.4-inch touchscreen, USB and SD card ports, Bluetooth calling and music streaming, Siri Eyes Free, Do Not Disturb, and Reply with Text Message. Navigation is optional.
• Fuel efficiency: The V6 is described as matching the 4-cylinder’s 22-mpg combined rating in the Trailhawk, and the expert write-up says real-world fuel economy fell short of EPA estimates.

Which 2016 Jeep Cherokee trim should I buy?

The 2016 Jeep Cherokee is offered in 4 trim levels: Sport, Latitude, Limited, Trailhawk.

Here's the short version:

• Sport: This is the entry point, so it makes sense if you want the Cherokee’s basic shape and capability at the lowest starting point. You should expect fewer comfort and convenience features than the higher trims.
• Latitude: This is the value-oriented step up if you want a better balance of everyday equipment without jumping all the way to the top of the range. It should suit you if you want more comfort than the Sport without paying for the Trailhawk’s specialized hardware.
• Limited: This is the better pick if you want a more upscale feel and more available convenience features. It’s the trim to consider if you care more about comfort and daily livability than trail-focused equipment.
• Trailhawk: This is the one to buy if you want the Cherokee’s strongest off-road capability and the most distinctive hardware. It adds the rugged equipment and capability that make this model year stand out, so it’s the best-value trim for buyers who want the Cherokee’s full personality.

The Trailhawk also gets the most capable 4WD system and the most off-road-focused safety and terrain features, so it’s the trim that best matches the model’s core appeal.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Jeep Cherokee?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you have room to shop, compare, and negotiate.

• Deal availability: 30.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 2,382 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 8.28% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 62.3% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $10,202, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2016 Jeep Cherokee's resale value?

The current average of $10,206 sits slightly below last year's $11,127.

That softer pricing suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy at a more favorable point. For a future seller, that also means resale upside may be more limited unless the vehicle is especially clean, well maintained, and attractively equipped.

Because the Cherokee still draws buyers who want comfort plus capability, a well-kept example should remain easier to move than one with questionable history or visible wear. Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.1/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2016 Jeep Cherokee safe?

The 2016 Jeep Cherokee earns a four-star overall rating from NHTSA and a Marginal rating from IIHS in the small overlap frontal impact test.

It earns a 6/10 safety score from our experts.

The standard Park View reversing camera is part of the safety equipment, and available driver-assistance features include blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic alert, lane-departure warning, and forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking. The expert write-up also notes that the camera’s low-light clarity is poor, and the IIHS small-overlap result is the main caveat to keep in mind.

Should I buy a 2016 Jeep Cherokee or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2016 if:

• 30.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 62.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 8.28% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.1/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
• The expert summary emphasizes that the Cherokee Trailhawk delivers comfort and utility in a package that is good to drive both on and off pavement.

The bottom line: The 2016 is a smart choice if you want the Cherokee’s strongest blend of comfort, utility, and capability at a softened used-car price. If you’re especially price-sensitive, you can still shop carefully for a lower-mileage or cleaner-history example, but the 2016 stands out as the year to target when you want the Trailhawk’s personality without paying new-car money.

How does the 2016 Jeep Cherokee compare to the 2016 Ford Escape?

Our experts score the 2016 Jeep Cherokee 7.8/10 and the 2016 Ford Escape 7.2/10.

The Cherokee is the stronger pick if you want more capability and a more distinctive personality, while the Escape is the better value if you care most about lower average used pricing and a larger pool of listings. The Cherokee also has the stronger expert score, but the Escape’s market data suggests more inventory and a slightly higher share of good or great deals.
