Why it stands out
The 2016 Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk stands out as a compact SUV that is built to handle more than the usual daily commute. It is described as comfortable and useful, while still being good to drive both on and off pavement. That combination gives it a broad appeal for buyers who want one vehicle that can cover a lot of different needs without feeling one-dimensional.
Its biggest distinction is capability. The Trailhawk is praised for shrugging off deteriorating city pavement, tackling freeway ramps with enthusiasm, and going places most other SUVs can’t. It is also presented as delivering impressive capability at a reasonable price, which makes it especially appealing to shoppers who want off-road confidence without giving up everyday usability. At the same time, owner feedback points to a sporty feel and a comfortable interior, though some drivers have raised concerns about build quality and engine and transmission reliability.

My husband and I absolutely enjoy this new car of ours. This is the vehicle we want and need. The features are perfect and everything works great, though we had to replace the brakes, spark plugs , and a few other things. The vehicle is in excellent condition and still looks new. The interior is beautiful. It’s the best vehicle for all of the driving that we do.

That broad usefulness is a big part of the appeal here: you get a compact SUV that can handle everyday driving, but also brings real capability for buyers who want more versatility. The user feedback also points to heated seats and a heated steering wheel as especially appreciated touches.
The market also shows 26.3% of listings as good or great deals, which gives you some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2016 Jeep Cherokee reliable?
Owners rate it 4.12/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
User feedback points to a dependable-feeling ownership experience for many drivers, with praise for the Cherokee’s comfortable, useful nature and the kind of everyday practicality that helps a vehicle feel easy to count on. At the same time, some owners raised concerns about build quality and engine and transmission reliability, so the reliability picture is not spotless.
The expert drive notes also flag the 9-speed automatic’s behavior as a recurring concern, including slow downshifts and some awkward parking behavior, which is worth keeping in mind if you want a used example you can trust for the long haul. The ownership-cost discussion also suggests that an extended warranty may be worth considering.
What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Jeep Cherokee?
At 61.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a thorough pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re considering a higher-mileage example or one with a rough service history. Pay close attention to body condition, signs of prior repair, and how the transmission behaves on a test drive.
Because this model is often bought for its versatility, you should also make sure the features and condition match the way you plan to use it. A clean-looking listing is not enough if the mechanical or accident history raises questions.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The Trailhawk is the rugged, “Trail Rated” version, while other variants include the base Sport, popular Latitude, and upscale Limited. The Trailhawk stands apart with its off-road-focused hardware and more aggressive exterior treatment, while the lower trims are the ones where you’re more likely to miss out on the most capability-oriented equipment.
- Powertrain: The standard engine is a 184-horsepower, 2.4-liter 4-cylinder, but the optional 271-horsepower, 3.2-liter V6 is the one the expert review strongly recommends. The V6 is described as the more efficient highway choice in the Trailhawk and matches the 4-cylinder’s 22-mpg combined rating.
- Safety package: The Cherokee includes a standard Park View reversing camera, and available driver-assistance features include blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic alert, lane-departure warning, and forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking. The camera’s low-light performance is criticized, so that’s worth checking carefully.
- Infotainment: The Trailhawk uses a Uconnect 8.4 system with an 8.4-inch touchscreen, USB and SD card ports, Bluetooth calling and music streaming, Siri Eyes Free, Do Not Disturb, and Reply with Text Message. Navigation is optional, and Uconnect Access services are subscription-based.
- Fuel efficiency: The V6 is described as matching the 4-cylinder’s 22-mpg combined rating in the Trailhawk, but real-world driving returned 20.6 mpg over more than 500 miles. The review also estimates about 300 miles of range from the 15.9-gallon tank.
Which 2016 Jeep Cherokee trim should I buy?
The 2016 Jeep Cherokee is offered in 4 trim levels: Sport, Latitude, Limited, Trailhawk.
Here's the short version:
- Sport: This is the entry point, and it’s the trim most likely to leave you wanting more if you care about the Cherokee’s stronger capability and richer feature content. It makes sense if you want the lowest-cost way into the nameplate, but it is not the one the review highlights as the best expression of the vehicle.
- Latitude: This is the mainstream choice in the lineup and a sensible step up if you want a better balance of equipment and price. It should suit you if you want the Cherokee’s core usefulness without paying for the most specialized hardware.
- Limited: This is the upscale trim for shoppers who want a more polished feel and more comfort-oriented equipment. It’s the better fit if you care more about everyday refinement than the Trailhawk’s off-road focus.
- Trailhawk: This is the best-value trim if you want the Cherokee’s defining strength: capability. It adds the most serious off-road hardware, including Jeep Active Drive Lock, Selec-Terrain, Selec-Speed control, a 56:1 4-Lo crawl ratio, a lifted suspension, and improved approach, breakover, and departure angles.
The Trailhawk also carries the safety-package note that the reversing camera is standard, while additional driver-assistance features remain optional.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Jeep Cherokee?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully without expecting every listing to be a bargain.
- Deal availability: 26.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 2,436 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.29% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 61.1% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $10,645.97, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2016 Jeep Cherokee's resale value?
The current average of $10,691 sits slightly below last year's $11,532.
That price decline suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can make the Cherokee easier to buy now but less favorable if you’re thinking purely about near-term resale upside. If you buy well, the lower entry price can help cushion future depreciation, but you should still expect value to depend heavily on condition, mileage, and history.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.12/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2016 Jeep Cherokee safe?
The Cherokee earns a four-star overall rating from NHTSA, and the IIHS gives it a Marginal result in the small overlap frontal impact test while rating it Good in all other assessments and Superior for front crash prevention.
It earns a 6/10 safety score from our experts.
The standard safety equipment includes a Park View reversing camera, and available driver-assistance features include blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic alert, lane-departure warning, and forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking. The low-light camera performance is called out as a weakness, so that’s a meaningful caveat if you drive often at night or in tight spaces.
Should I buy a 2016 Jeep Cherokee or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2016 if:
- 26.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 61.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.29% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.12/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- The expert review highlights the Trailhawk’s ability to handle both daily driving and serious off-road use while still feeling comfortable and composed.
The bottom line: If you want the Cherokee’s strongest mix of capability, comfort, and value, the 2016 is a compelling choice, especially if you find a clean example with the right equipment. If you’re more price-sensitive, you can still shop this year carefully, but you should be especially selective about history and transmission behavior before you commit.
