Reviewers describe the Sonata as reliable and dependable, and they also highlight its trouble-free ownership experience and strong condition even after substantial mileage. The expert evaluation reinforces that theme by describing it as a thoroughly capable car that checks the important boxes buyers expect in this class.

The ownership picture is helped by Hyundai’s industry-leading warranty and roadside-assistance program, which adds peace of mind for used buyers. For long-term ownership, your main risk is less about day-to-day dependability and more about choosing a well-maintained example with a clean history.

What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Hyundai Sonata?

At 53.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has been in a prior collision. Focus on bodywork quality, panel alignment, and signs of uneven wear, since condition matters more when you’re shopping from a mixed-history pool. It also helps to compare equipment carefully, because trim differences are meaningful on this model.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The SE, Sport, Sport 2.0T, Limited, and Limited 2.0T each bring different equipment levels, and the base SE is the most stripped-down of the group.
• Powertrain: The lineup includes a 185-horsepower, 2.4-liter 4-cylinder and a 240-hp turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder, with the turbo model delivering stronger low-end torque and a more responsive feel.
• Safety package: Blind-spot warning and rear cross-traffic alert are useful standard safety technologies on the test car, while the Limited 2.0T adds forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, adaptive high-beam headlights, lane-departure warning, and rear parking-assist sensors.
• Infotainment: Android Auto is standard, and Blue Link adds remote start, door-lock access, stolen-vehicle recovery, collision notification, SOS assistance, and parental controls for speed, curfew, and geographic boundaries.
• Fuel efficiency: The Sport 2.0T returned 25.5 mpg on the test loop, and the review notes an EPA estimate of 26 mpg in combined driving.

Which 2016 Hyundai Sonata trim should I buy?

The 2016 Hyundai Sonata is offered in 5 trim levels: SE, Sport, Sport 2.0T, Limited, and Limited 2.0T.

Here's the short version:

• SE: This is the value-focused starting point, and it makes sense if you want the Sonata’s core strengths without paying for extras.
• Sport: This trim adds a more distinctive look and a sportier feel, making it the best-value choice if you want a little more personality without jumping to the turbo model.
• Sport 2.0T: Choose this if you want the turbocharged engine and stronger performance, but be aware that the ride is firmer and the handling still isn’t truly sporty.
• Limited: This is the comfort-and-features upgrade, and it suits you if you want a more upscale cabin and more convenience equipment.
• Limited 2.0T: This is the most fully equipped version, and it’s the one to target if you want the strongest safety and convenience content, including the advanced driver-assistance features.

The safety-package trim note is simple: the Limited 2.0T is the trim that adds the most advanced safety equipment.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Hyundai Sonata?

This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile options.

• Deal availability: 27.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,384 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 3.85% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 53.4% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $9,340, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2016 Hyundai Sonata's resale value?

The current average of $9,508 sits slightly below last year's $9,889.

That softer pricing suggests the Sonata has already absorbed some of its near-term depreciation, which can help if you buy now and sell later. For a future seller, the current market indicates that well-kept examples should remain easier to move than neglected ones, especially if they have clean history and strong equipment. The price trend also means your best resale outcome will likely come from buying carefully and preserving condition.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2016 Hyundai Sonata safe?

The 2016 Hyundai Sonata earns an Acceptable rating in the IIHS small overlap frontal-impact test and a four-star rollover resistance rating from NHTSA.

It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

The Sonata includes blind-spot warning and rear cross-traffic alert, and the Limited 2.0T adds forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, adaptive high-beam headlights, lane-departure warning, and rear parking-assist sensors. The standout caveat is the Acceptable small-overlap result, which is a notch below the best IIHS rating and is worth keeping in mind if safety is a top priority.

Should I buy a 2016 Hyundai Sonata or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2016 if:

• 27.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 53.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 3.85% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It’s a thoroughly capable midsize sedan that emphasizes balance, comfort, and value over excitement.

Consider the 2015 if:

• At $8,862, the 2015 costs less than the current year's $9,508 average.
• It’s a more refined take on Hyundai’s midsize sedan, with a polished, practical everyday feel.

The bottom line: If you want the stronger current-market mix of value, satisfaction, and inventory, the 2016 is the better default choice. If your priority is spending less up front, the 2015 is the smarter price-sensitive alternative, especially if you find a clean, well-kept example.
