What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Honda HR-V?

At 53.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the listing has any accident history or incomplete service records. Focus on body condition, panel alignment, and signs of repair quality, then make sure the car’s electronics and driver-facing controls work the way you expect. Because owner feedback mentions occasional starting issues tied to non-standard keys, it is also worth checking how the car starts and whether all keys and remotes are present.

Key things to evaluate:

The EX-L with Navigation adds roof rails, leather-trimmed seats, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, and Honda satellite-linked navigation with traffic information and voice recognition.
• Powertrain: All HR-V models use a 1.8-liter 4-cylinder engine with 141 hp and 128 lb-ft of torque. The CVT is described as a strong match for the engine, with smooth response from stops to highway speeds, while the manual transmission is standard on front-wheel-drive models and the CVT is used with all-wheel drive.

• Infotainment: The HR-V’s tech includes a 5-inch color LCD on the LX and a 7-inch WVGA touchscreen on the EX, plus Bluetooth, USB connectivity, dual USB ports on the EX, HondaLink Next Generation, Pandora integration, SMS text-message capability, and available navigation with traffic information. The 2016 Honda HR-V is offered in 3 trim levels: LX, EX, and EX-L with Navigation.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Honda HR-V?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently but still move quickly when you find the right listing.

• Deal availability: 31.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 622 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have held steady compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 53.9% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $13,042, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2016 Honda HR-V's resale value?

The current average of $13,418 sits slightly above last year's $13,389.

That small increase suggests the HR-V has held its value fairly well rather than swinging sharply up or down. For a future seller, that kind of stability is helpful because it points to a market that remains predictable and relatively easy to price. It also means you are less likely to see dramatic depreciation in the near term if you keep the vehicle in good condition and maintain it well.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.6/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2016 Honda HR-V safe?

The 2016 Honda HR-V earns an overall five-star rating from NHTSA.

It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.

The standard safety equipment includes a rear-view camera, brake assist, and vehicle stability assist, and Honda’s ACE body structure is designed to channel crash energy around occupants. The optional Honda LaneWatch camera system adds another visibility aid, though the expert review notes that the infotainment and camera-based systems can demand too much attention while driving. That usability issue is the main safety caveat to keep in mind when you test the car.

Should I buy a 2016 Honda HR-V or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2016 if:

• 31.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 53.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have held steady compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.6/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• Sales of small SUVs and crossovers are growing aggressively, and this model year brings Honda’s new HR-V into the segment below the CR-V.

The bottom line: The 2016 HR-V makes sense if you want a compact crossover with strong owner satisfaction, steady pricing, and a familiar Honda feel. If you are shopping on a tighter budget, the stable market and decent deal share make this a reasonable year to target; if you want newer tech or a more polished interface, you may want to compare it carefully with other model years before deciding.
