CarGurus Analysis: 2016 Subaru Crosstrek
overall

Summary
With 1,263 currently listed for sale and an average price of $12,610, 33.3% of 2016 Subaru Crosstreks for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2016 Subaru Crosstrek 5 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 6.5 / 10.
57.8% of 2016 Crosstrek models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2016 Subaru Crosstrek stands out for adding useful technology and safety equipment while simplifying its name. For 2016, it gains the Starlink telematics suite and safety features such as blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and lane-departure alert, and it also drops the “XV” from the front of its name. Subaru also gives it a front-end restyle and some interior tweaks, which help keep the compact crossover feeling current.
Even with those updates, the 2016 Subaru Crosstrek is still held back by its powertrain. That makes it a good fit for buyers who value the Crosstrek’s practical, safety-focused character more than outright performance. Owner feedback also points to strong satisfaction with the vehicle’s safety, reliability, all-wheel drive, and easy handling, reinforcing its appeal as a versatile everyday crossover.

Purchased a Limited version that has many options for a 2016 model year. Crosstrks retain their value and are very reliable. Felt the car was a good value despite other cars being available for less. Newer models have more safety features, but they were out of our price range.

How much does the 2016 Subaru Crosstrek cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $12,597 |
| Year-Round Low | $12,582 |
| Year-Round High | $13,802 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $13,774 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −8.55% |
Prices have softened 8.55% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 1,266 listings available, which suggests solid inventory for shoppers comparing options.
Is the 2016 Subaru Crosstrek a good car?
Yes — the 2016 Subaru Crosstrek earns a 5/5 user rating and a 6.5/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Safety at 8/10.
Owners consistently praise its safety, reliability, all-wheel drive, and easy handling. That lines up well with the Crosstrek’s practical, safety-focused character, especially if you want a versatile everyday crossover rather than a vehicle built for outright performance. The market also shows 33.7% of listings as good or great deals, which gives you some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2016 Subaru Crosstrek reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
User feedback points to reliability, dependable ownership, and a vehicle you can count on over time. The expert evaluation also notes that the Crosstrek’s straightforward setup supports everyday use, even though the powertrain is a weak spot. If you’re buying used, the main long-term ownership risk is that a well-kept example matters more here than a low-mileage badge alone.
What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Subaru Crosstrek?
At 58.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the listing price looks unusually attractive. Focus on body condition, signs of prior repair, and whether the car’s safety and driver-assistance equipment works as expected. Because this model year emphasizes safety and everyday usability, condition matters a lot when you’re comparing similar-priced examples.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base trim comes with 17-inch alloys, a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, a rear-view camera, fog lights, a 6.2-inch touchscreen with smartphone integration, and a USB port/Aux input. The Premium trim adds heated body-color mirrors, heated front seats, an upgraded stereo, contrast stitching, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, an adjustable center armrest, and a cargo cover and tray. The Limited trim adds upgraded gauges and infotainment with a 7-inch touchscreen and satellite radio, auto climate control, auto headlights, leather, and an acoustic windshield.
- Powertrain: The 2.0-liter boxer engine makes 148 hp and 145 lb-ft of torque. A 5-speed manual is standard on the base and Premium trims, while the Limited uses a CVT. The CVT improves efficiency by 3 mpg on either end of the spectrum versus the manual, but the powertrain is still described as loud and weak at highway speeds.
- Safety package: The Eyesight safety system adds rear cross-traffic alert, blind-spot monitoring, and lane-departure warning. The Crosstrek also includes automatic collision notification with SOS, stolen-vehicle recovery, and a monitoring app through Starlink. The base trim gets a rear-view camera, but the Eyesight system is not standard across the lineup.
- Infotainment: The base trim uses a 6.2-inch touchscreen, while the Limited gets a 7-inch system. Starlink is included, and the larger screen is the more appealing setup, though the navigation system is not especially strong.
- Fuel efficiency: The manual transmission is rated at 23 mpg city/31 highway, and the CVT adds 3 mpg on either end of the spectrum.
Which 2016 Subaru Crosstrek trim should I buy?
The 2016 Subaru Crosstrek is offered in 3 trim levels: 2.0i, 2.0i Premium, 2.0i Limited.
Here's the short version:
- 2.0i: This is the value play if you want the lowest entry price and still want useful standard equipment like a rear-view camera, smartphone integration, fog lights, and 17-inch alloys. It’s the trim to start with if you care more about affordability and core utility than comfort upgrades.
- 2.0i Premium: This is the best-value trim because it adds heated front seats, heated mirrors, an upgraded stereo, and a nicer cabin without jumping too far in price. If you want the most balanced mix of comfort and cost, this is the one to target.
- 2.0i Limited: This is the trim to choose if you want the most features, including the 7-inch touchscreen, satellite radio, auto climate control, auto headlights, leather, and an acoustic windshield. It suits you best if you want the most upscale version and are willing to pay more for it.
The safety package with Eyesight is a meaningful upgrade where equipped, but it is not standard on every trim.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Subaru Crosstrek?
This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.
- Deal availability: 33.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,266 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 8.55% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 58.1% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $12,582, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2016 Subaru Crosstrek's resale value?
The current average of $12,597 sits slightly below last year's $13,774.
That decline suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can make the Crosstrek more approachable for you as a buyer today. For a future seller, it means pricing discipline matters: if you buy well and keep the car in strong condition, you’ll be better positioned to protect value. The model’s broad appeal for safety, all-wheel drive, and everyday usability should help support demand over time.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2016 Subaru Crosstrek safe?
The 2016 Subaru Crosstrek earns top marks from both IIHS and NHTSA, with only the NHTSA’s total frontal impact test receiving a four-star rating.
It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.
The Crosstrek comes with a named safety suite that includes blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and lane-departure warning, along with automatic collision notification with SOS, stolen-vehicle recovery, and a monitoring app through Starlink. Standard safety equipment also includes 4-wheel antilock brakes, traction and stability control, a rear-view camera, active front head restraints, and a full airbag suite. One caveat is that the Eyesight system can shut off when the camera view is blocked by sun, fog, dirt, snow, or mud.
Should I buy a 2016 Subaru Crosstrek or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2016 if:
- 33.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 58.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 8.55% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2016 model adds Starlink and safety features such as blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and lane-departure alert.
The bottom line: If you want the Crosstrek’s safety-first, all-wheel-drive appeal and you find a clean, well-priced example, the 2016 is a sensible buy. If you’re especially price-sensitive, focus on the best-maintained listing you can find rather than stretching for a higher trim with more features.
