CarGurus Analysis: 2016 Subaru Crosstrek
overall

Summary
With 1,272 currently listed for sale and an average price of $12,614, 32.4% of 2016 Subaru Crosstreks for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2016 Subaru Crosstrek 5 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 6.5 / 10.
57.5% of 2016 Crosstrek models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2016 Subaru Crosstrek stands out for adding useful technology and safety equipment while simplifying its name. For 2016, it gains the Starlink telematics suite and safety features such as blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and lane-departure alert, and it also drops the “XV” from the front of its name. Subaru also gives it a front-end restyle and some interior tweaks, which help keep the compact crossover feeling current.
Even with those updates, the 2016 Subaru Crosstrek is still held back by its powertrain. That makes it a good fit for buyers who value the Crosstrek’s practical, safety-focused character more than outright performance. Owner feedback also points to strong satisfaction with the vehicle’s safety, reliability, all-wheel drive, and easy handling, reinforcing its appeal as a versatile everyday crossover.

Purchased a Limited version that has many options for a 2016 model year. Crosstrks retain their value and are very reliable. Felt the car was a good value despite other cars being available for less. Newer models have more safety features, but they were out of our price range.

| Year-Round High | $13,868.21 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $13,873 |

Prices have softened 9.34% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 1,290 listings available, which gives you a solid amount of inventory to compare.
If you find a listing below $12,572.55, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2016 Subaru Crosstrek a good car?
Yes — the 2016 Subaru Crosstrek earns a 5/5 user rating and a 6.5/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Safety at 8/10.
Owners consistently praise its safety features, reliability, and all-wheel-drive versatility. They also describe it as easy to handle and practical for everyday use, which fits the Crosstrek’s compact crossover mission well. For you, that means it makes the most sense if you want a small, easy-to-live-with vehicle with a strong safety focus rather than a quick one.
The market also shows 31.9% good or great deals, so there are still worthwhile opportunities if you shop carefully.
Is the 2016 Subaru Crosstrek reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback points to reliability, dependability, and a trouble-free ownership experience, with many drivers saying they feel confident counting on it over time. The expert notes also reinforce that dependable character by describing the Crosstrek as a practical, easy-to-live-with crossover with useful safety and technology upgrades for 2016.
The main long-term ownership risk for used buyers is that the powertrain remains the model’s biggest weakness, so you should pay close attention to how it drives and sounds before you buy.
What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Subaru Crosstrek?
At 58.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the listing price looks unusually attractive. Focus on body condition, repair quality, and whether the car drives cleanly under acceleration and at highway speeds. Because this model’s powertrain is a known weak point, it is worth paying extra attention to noise, response, and overall drivability.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base 2.0i comes with 17-inch alloys, a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, a rear-view camera, fog lights, a 6.2-inch touchscreen with smartphone integration, and a USB port/Aux input. The 2.0i Premium adds heated body-color mirrors, heated front seats, an upgraded stereo, contrast stitching, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, an adjustable center armrest, and a cargo cover and tray. The 2.0i Limited adds upgraded gauges and infotainment with a 7-inch touchscreen and satellite radio, auto climate control, auto headlights, leather, and an acoustic windshield. The best-value trim is the 2.0i Premium if you want more comfort without moving all the way up the range.
- Powertrain: The 2.0-liter boxer engine is paired with a 5-speed manual on the 2.0i and 2.0i Premium, while the CVT is optional on the Premium and standard on the Limited. The CVT improves efficiency by 3 mpg on either end compared with the manual’s 23 mpg city/31 highway rating, but the powertrain is still described as loud and weak at highway speeds.
- Safety package: The Crosstrek includes blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and lane-departure alert, along with the Eyesight safety system on equipped trims. Standard safety equipment includes 4-wheel antilock brakes, traction and stability control, a full suite of airbags, a rear-view camera, and active front head restraints. The Eyesight system is not universal across all trims.
- Infotainment: The base trim uses a 6.2-inch touchscreen with smartphone integration, while the Limited gets a 7-inch touchscreen and satellite radio. Starlink adds automatic collision notification with SOS, stolen-vehicle recovery, and a monitoring app. The navigation system is not especially strong, and the rear-view camera resolution is low.
- Fuel efficiency: The manual transmission is rated at 23 mpg city/31 highway, and the CVT adds 3 mpg on either end.
Which 2016 Subaru Crosstrek trim should I buy?
The 2016 Subaru Crosstrek is offered in 3 trim levels: 2.0i, 2.0i Premium, 2.0i Limited.
Here's the short version:
- 2.0i: This is the entry point, and it already gives you a rear-view camera, smartphone integration, fog lights, and the core Crosstrek formula at the lowest price. It makes sense if you want the cheapest way into the model and can live without the comfort upgrades.
- 2.0i Premium: This is the best-value trim because it adds heated front seats, heated mirrors, a better stereo, and nicer interior touches without jumping all the way to the Limited. If you want the most balanced mix of price and everyday comfort, this is the one to target.
- 2.0i Limited: This trim adds the 7-inch touchscreen, satellite radio, auto climate control, auto headlights, leather, and an acoustic windshield. It suits you best if you want the most upscale version of the standard Crosstrek and are willing to pay more for it.
The safety package adds useful driver-assistance features, but the Eyesight system is not universal across all trims.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Subaru Crosstrek?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you can shop with some leverage if you stay patient.
- Deal availability: 31.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,290 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 9.34% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 58.1% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $12,572.55, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2016 Subaru Crosstrek's resale value?
The current average of $12,577 sits slightly below last year's $13,873.
That softer pricing suggests the model has already absorbed some depreciation, which can help if you buy now and hold it for a while. For a future seller, the current market is a reminder that condition and history will matter a lot, because buyers will have plenty of listings to compare. The Crosstrek’s value retention should still benefit from its strong reputation and owner satisfaction, but the powertrain’s limitations may keep resale upside in check.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2016 Subaru Crosstrek safe?
Both the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety awarded the Crosstrek top marks in all tests, with only the NHTSA’s total frontal impact test receiving anything other than a perfect score, rating four out of five stars.
It earns a 8/10 safety score from our experts.
The Crosstrek comes with blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-departure alert, automatic collision notification with SOS, stolen-vehicle recovery, and a monitoring app through Starlink. Standard safety equipment also includes 4-wheel antilock brakes, traction and stability control, a full airbag suite, a rear-view camera, and active front head restraints.
One caveat is that the Eyesight system can shut off when the camera view is blocked by sun, fog, dirt, snow, or mud, so you should not assume every driver-assistance feature will work flawlessly in all conditions.
Should I buy a 2016 Subaru Crosstrek or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2016 if:
- 31.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 58.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 9.34% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2016 model adds Starlink plus blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and lane-departure alert.
The bottom line: If you want the Crosstrek with the most useful safety and tech updates in this price band, the 2016 is the one to focus on. If you are especially price-sensitive, you can still shop carefully and look for a clean, well-maintained example with a strong history report, but you should be selective because accident history is common enough to matter.
