CarGurus Analysis: 2016 Subaru Crosstrek
overall

Summary
With 79 currently listed for sale near Los Angeles, CA and an average price of $11,444.00, 22.8% of 2016 Subaru Crosstreks for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2016 Subaru Crosstrek 5 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 6.5 / 10.
82.3% of 2016 Crosstrek models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2016 Subaru Crosstrek stands out for adding useful technology and safety equipment while simplifying its name. For 2016, it gained the Starlink telematics suite along with blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and lane-departure alert. It also dropped the “XV” from the front of its name, giving the compact crossover a cleaner identity.
Subaru also gave the 2016 Crosstrek a front-end restyle and some interior tweaks to keep it feeling current. Those updates help make it more appealing to buyers who want a practical, easy-to-live-with crossover with a strong safety focus. At the same time, its powertrain remains the main limitation, and that is what holds it back most.

Purchased a Limited version that has many options for a 2016 model year. Crosstrks retain their value and are very reliable. Felt the car was a good value despite other cars being available for less. Newer models have more safety features, but they were out of our price range.

How much does the 2016 Subaru Crosstrek cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $12,621 |
| Year-Round Low | $12,631.59 |
| Year-Round High | $13,827.34 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $13,778 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −8.39% |
Prices have softened 8.39% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 1,276 listings available, which gives you a solid pool of options to compare.
If you find a listing below $12,631.59, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2016 Subaru Crosstrek a good car?
Yes — the 2016 Subaru Crosstrek earns a 5/5 user rating and a 6.5/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Safety at 8/10.
Owners consistently praise the safety features, reliability, all-wheel drive system, and the Crosstrek’s versatile, easy-to-handle character. For you, that means this is a practical compact crossover that fits daily driving, bad-weather commuting, and general utility well.
The 2016 updates also add useful tech and safety equipment, including Starlink, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and lane-departure alert. That makes it especially appealing if you want a small crossover with a strong safety focus and straightforward everyday usability.
With 25.7% of listings priced as good or great deals, there is still meaningful market opportunity if you shop carefully.
Is the 2016 Subaru Crosstrek reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
Owners also describe the Crosstrek as reliable, and the review summary points to dependable, trouble-free ownership with a vehicle you can count on. The expert evaluation reinforces that impression by emphasizing the Crosstrek’s simple, durable-feeling character and its straightforward mechanical setup.
The cost-effectiveness notes add that Subaru has traditionally enjoyed better-than-average value retention, which supports confidence in long-term ownership. The main risk for used buyers is that the powertrain’s limitations and the model’s average-at-best reliability reports can make condition and maintenance history especially important.
What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Subaru Crosstrek?
At 57.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a thorough pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has been in any collision. Focus on body alignment, panel gaps, tire wear, and signs that safety systems or cameras may have been affected by prior repairs.
Pay close attention to how the powertrain behaves on a test drive, since the expert notes make clear that it is the Crosstrek’s biggest weakness. You should also confirm that the safety and tech features work properly, because this model’s appeal depends heavily on the equipment it added for 2016.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base 2.0i comes with 17-inch alloys, a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, a rear-view camera, fog lights, a 6.2-inch touchscreen with smartphone integration, and a USB port/Aux input. The 2.0i Premium adds heated, body-color mirrors, heated front seats, an upgraded stereo, contrast stitching, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, an adjustable center armrest, and a cargo cover and tray. The 2.0i Limited adds upgraded gauges and infotainment with a 7-inch touchscreen and satellite radio, auto climate control, auto headlights, leather, and an acoustic windshield.
- Powertrain: The 2.0-liter boxer engine is paired with a 5-speed manual on the 2.0i and 2.0i Premium, while the CVT is optional on the Premium and standard on the Limited. The manual uses Subaru’s symmetrical all-wheel-drive system with 50/50 power distribution, while CVT-equipped trims use a front-wheel-drive-biased system that can send more power rearward when needed. The CVT improves efficiency by 3 mpg on either end versus the manual’s 23 mpg city/31 highway rating.
- Safety package: The Eyesight safety system adds rear cross-traffic alert, blind-spot monitoring, and lane-departure warning. The Crosstrek also comes with 4-wheel antilock brakes, traction and stability control, a full suite of airbags, a rear-view camera, and active front head restraints. The safety tech is valuable, but the camera and optical system can be limited when the view is blocked by sun, fog, mist, dirt, snow, or mud.
- Infotainment: The base trim uses a 6.2-inch touchscreen with smartphone integration, while the Limited upgrades to a 7-inch touchscreen and satellite radio. Starlink adds automatic collision notification with SOS, stolen-vehicle recovery, and a monitoring app.
- Fuel efficiency: The manual transmission is rated at 23 mpg city/31 highway, and the CVT adds 3 mpg on either end.
Which 2016 Subaru Crosstrek trim should I buy?
The 2016 Subaru Crosstrek is offered in 3 trim levels: 2.0i, 2.0i Premium, 2.0i Limited.
Here's the short version:
- 2.0i: This is the value play if you want the lowest entry price and still want a well-equipped crossover with a rear-view camera, smartphone integration, fog lights, and Subaru’s core all-weather hardware.
- 2.0i Premium: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds heated front seats, heated mirrors, a better stereo, and nicer cabin touches without moving too far up the price ladder.
- 2.0i Limited: Choose this if you want the most comfort and tech, including the 7-inch touchscreen, satellite radio, auto climate control, auto headlights, leather, and the acoustic windshield.
The safety package is a strong part of the Crosstrek’s appeal, but the Eyesight system can be limited when conditions block the cameras.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Subaru Crosstrek?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you stay disciplined.
- Deal availability: 25.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,276 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 8.39% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 57.4% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $12,631.59, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2016 Subaru Crosstrek's resale value?
The current average of $12,621 sits slightly below last year's $13,778.
That softer pricing suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy at a more favorable point. For a future seller, that also means resale value will depend heavily on condition, mileage, and whether the car has a clean history.
Subaru’s better-than-average value retention helps support long-term demand, but the Crosstrek’s powertrain limitations can still weigh on buyer enthusiasm. If you keep the car well maintained and avoid accident history, you should be in a better position when it is time to sell.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2016 Subaru Crosstrek safe?
Both the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) awarded the Crosstrek top marks in all tests, with only the NHTSA’s total frontal impact test receiving anything other than a perfect score, rating four-star.
It earns a 8/10 safety score from our experts.
The Crosstrek comes with blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-departure alert, automatic collision notification with SOS, stolen-vehicle recovery, and a monitoring app through Starlink and Eyesight. Standard safety equipment also includes 4-wheel antilock brakes, traction and stability control, a full suite of airbags, a rear-view camera, and active front head restraints.
One caveat is that the Eyesight system can shut off when the cameras are blocked by sun, fog, mist, dirt, snow, or mud, so you should not assume every driver-assistance feature will work flawlessly in all conditions.
Should I buy a 2016 Subaru Crosstrek or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2016 if:
- 25.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 57.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 8.39% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2016 stands out for adding Starlink plus blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and lane-departure alert.
The bottom line: If you want the Crosstrek with the most useful safety and tech updates in this generation, the 2016 is the one to target. If you are more price-sensitive, you can still shop carefully and focus on clean-history examples, but you should be especially selective about condition and maintenance because the powertrain remains the model’s biggest compromise.
