CarGurus Analysis: 2016 Ford Expedition

Summary
With 95 currently listed for sale and an average price of $12,186, 24.2% of 2016 Ford Expedition listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2016 Ford Expedition 4.5 / 5 stars.
67.4% of 2016 Ford Expedition listings on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2016 Ford Expedition stands out as a full-size SUV that was built around family use without giving up truck-based capability. It offers a third row, plenty of passenger space, and a smooth ride, and its independent rear suspension helps deliver that comfort. It also shares its basic hardware and styling cues with the Ford F-150, which gives it a familiar, rugged foundation. For buyers who need flexibility, the Expedition’s standard rear-wheel drive and available four-wheel drive keep it versatile.
This generation also brought a meaningful step up in technology and convenience. Available features include a 360-degree camera, park assist, automatic emergency braking, lane keep assist, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, USB ports, a Wi-Fi hotspot, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto compatibility, and Ford Sync 3. The Expedition can also be equipped with an electronic locking rear differential and a Terrain Management System with seven drive modes, while Pro Trailer Backup Assist adds a useful towing aid. Under the hood, the 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 delivers 375 horsepower, and the SUV can tow up to 9,300 pounds when properly equipped.
For shoppers, the appeal is straightforward: the 2016 Ford Expedition combines generous space, strong towing ability, and a long list of available tech in a package that still feels comfortable on the road. It is not especially quiet on the highway, and it can be tough to maneuver in tight spaces, so it is best suited to buyers who can use its size. Still, for families who want a roomy three-row SUV with real utility, it remains a compelling choice.

Great truck, very roomy and has all the features we need at a budget friendly price.

The truck is loaded with features. I think the price was fair, but after taking a long drive, I discovered the engine has a miss. Hopefully a tune up will fix the situation. Compares to a tahoe, suburban and yukon.

This car has all our bells and whistles that my previous 2003 Ford Expedition lacked but I’ve had it for 18 years and it was named The Gus Bus.

If dealers would repair them accurately I may like them better. The dealer just kept throwing parts and the car still has the same problem. I loved my 2004 expedition Eddie Bauer better. This seems like it always is coming up with an issue.

Is the 2016 Ford Expedition reliable?
Owners rate it 4.5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback also points to dependable day-to-day comfort, with repeated praise for the smooth ride and spacious cabin that make it easy to live with over time. At the same time, some owners report reliability concerns and dissatisfaction with dealer service, so used buyers should pay close attention to maintenance history and overall condition before committing.
What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Ford Expedition?
At 64.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and confirm whether any prior damage was repaired properly. Then prioritize a thorough pre-purchase inspection, especially for signs of bodywork, suspension wear, and uneven panel gaps. Because this is a large family SUV, you should also focus on how well the cabin, electronics, and drivetrain have held up under regular use.

What is the 2016 Ford Expedition's resale value?
The current average of $13,081 sits slightly below last year's $13,764.
That softer pricing suggests the market has moved in buyers’ favor, which can limit upside if you plan to sell soon. On the other hand, it may help you buy at a more favorable entry point today. If you keep the vehicle in strong condition and maintain it well, you can help protect its future value when it’s time to trade or sell.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2016 Ford Expedition or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2016 if:
- 31.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 64.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 4.96% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2015 if:
- At $11,412, the 2015 costs less than the current year's $13,081 average.
- It offers a familiar design with a notable efficiency-minded powertrain update.
The bottom line: Choose the 2016 if you want the stronger current-market balance of price, satisfaction, and availability. If your priority is spending less upfront, the 2015 is the better value-focused alternative.
