CarGurus Analysis: 2015 BMW X5
overall

Summary
With 1,127 currently listed for sale and an average price of $12,899.00, 34.3% of 2015 BMW X5s for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2015 BMW X5 4.55 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.83 / 10.
70.5% of 2015 X5 models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2015 BMW X5 stands out for the way it blends SUV practicality with the kind of driving feel BMW is known for. BMW built the X5 to handle like a 5 Series, and that focus on sensations behind the wheel remains one of its defining traits. It is also described as the best-selling of BMW’s sporty SUVs and crossovers, which helps explain why it has been such a familiar sight on the road.
For buyers, the appeal is straightforward: the X5 offers a fast, swift-handling, jacked-up wagon character with all-wheel drive. That makes it distinctive among luxury SUVs, especially for shoppers who care as much about driving enjoyment as they do about utility. At the same time, the available owner feedback suggests the 2015 X5 can feel expensive, and some drivers noted the absence of certain modern safety features that are more common in other vehicles.

Overall, it’s a great car. Fantastic design and amenities. Only drawback is that it’s missing some things that are more standard on lesser cars nowadays like lane guidance, blind spot detection and emergency braking. It’s hard to find an older car with these options because they were a premium years ago. Build quality and beauty of car is off the charts.

See more price trendsHow much does the 2015 BMW X5 cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $12,887 |
| Year-Round Low | $12,888.52 |
| Year-Round High | $14,212.54 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $14,210 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −9.31% |
Prices have softened 9.31% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 1,118 listings available, which gives you a solid amount of inventory to compare before you buy.
If you find a listing below $12,888.52, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2015 BMW X5 a good car?
Yes — the 2015 BMW X5 earns a 4.55/5 user rating and a 7.83/10 expert rating. The model scores 9/10 across Performance and Technology.
Drivers consistently praise its performance, style, and luxurious features. The review summary also points to a smooth ride and strong power, especially when you move up to better-equipped versions.
With 32.6% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have a meaningful chance to find a competitive offer if you shop carefully.
Is the 2015 BMW X5 reliable?
Owners rate it 4.55/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The review summary points to a vehicle that many drivers find impressive for its performance, style, and luxurious feel, with a smooth ride and strong power that help it feel satisfying over time. The expert drive notes also emphasize a chassis that still delivers terrific sensations behind the wheel and a powertrain lineup that ranges from efficient to very strong.
BMW also includes features that support everyday dependability, such as brakes that dry themselves in the rain and compensate for fade over repeated stops.
For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is that a luxury SUV like this can become expensive if prior maintenance was skipped or option-heavy systems need repair.
What should I look for when buying a used 2015 BMW X5?
At 63.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the listing has been optioned heavily or shows signs of prior bodywork. Focus on condition, maintenance records, and whether the vehicle’s features still operate as intended.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base rear-wheel-drive sDrive35i is the only version without standard all-wheel drive, while higher trims add more equipment and luxury touches. The cabin presentation is notably more upscale than the previous generation, with plusher materials, two-tone color choices, ambient lighting, and matte-finish wood among the available amenities.
- Powertrain: The 3.0-liter twin-turbo inline six is the preferred engine, with broad torque and better fuel economy than the V8. The 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 is much quicker, while the diesel and X5 M broaden the lineup further.
- Safety package: The optional Active Driving Assist adds forward collision alert with automatic braking for cars and pedestrians, plus lane-departure warning. Blind-spot monitoring and a backup camera are available, but they are not standard.
- Infotainment: The 10.2-inch LCD screen includes a searchable digital owner’s manual with videos and diagrams. The system also offers live traffic, Internet browsing, oil-level checks, and pedestrian spotting with night vision.
- Fuel efficiency: The inline six returned 24 mpg, while the V8 returned 17 mpg. BMW also uses Eco Pro to help claim higher fuel economy.
Which 2015 BMW X5 trim should I buy?
The 2015 BMW X5 is offered in 5 trim levels: sDrive35i, xDrive35i, xDrive35d, xDrive50i, X5 M.
Here's the short version:
- Base trim: The sDrive35i is the only rear-wheel-drive version, so it lacks the standard all-wheel drive that comes on the others. It also sits below the more lavishly equipped versions in cabin presentation and available luxury content.
- Sweet-spot trim: The xDrive35i is the best all-around pick if you want the core X5 experience with all-wheel drive and the preferred 3.0-liter twin-turbo inline six. It balances performance and efficiency better than the V8.
- Premium/top trim: The xDrive50i brings the 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8, which delivers much stronger acceleration and a more dramatic performance character. It is the choice if you want the most power in the standard lineup.
- Off-road trim: The X5 M is the most extreme performance version, but it is not the best fit for typical daily driving if you want a calmer, more practical ownership experience.
The optional Active Driving Assist package adds forward collision alert with automatic braking for cars and pedestrians, plus lane-departure warning.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2015 BMW X5?
This is a moderate market, so you can shop selectively without expecting every listing to be a bargain.
- Deal availability: 32.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,118 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 9.31% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 63.5% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $12,888.52, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2015 BMW X5's resale value?
The current average of $12,887 sits slightly below last year's $14,210.
That price movement suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy at a more favorable point in the cycle. If you plan to sell later, the softer current pricing means your upside depends more on condition, mileage, and equipment than on broad market appreciation.
Well-kept examples with strong equipment and clean history should hold buyer interest better than neglected ones. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.55/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2015 BMW X5 safe?
The BMW X5 earns five-star ratings from federal crash tests and a top Good rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.
It earns a 8/10 safety score from our experts.
The optional Active Driving Assist brings forward collision alert with automatic braking for cars and pedestrians, plus lane-departure warning. Blind-spot monitoring and a backup camera are available, but they are not standard.
BMW also includes all the usual airbags and stability control features, along with rain-drying brakes that help maintain stopping performance. The safety picture is strong overall, but you should still verify whether a specific used example has the driver-assistance equipment you want.
Should I buy a 2015 BMW X5 or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2015 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2015 if:
- 32.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 63.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 9.31% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.55/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2015 X5 combines strong performance, upscale cabin materials, and a broad set of available safety and tech features.
Consider the 2014 if:
- At $11,923, the 2014 costs less than the current year's $12,887 average.
- It helped establish the third-generation X5 as a luxury SUV benchmark.
The bottom line: If you want the strongest mix of performance, luxury, and current market value, the 2015 is the better target. If your priority is spending less up front, the 2014 can be the smarter budget play, especially if you find one with a clean history and solid maintenance records.
