The ownership tradeoff is that this is still a complex luxury SUV, so a careful service-history check matters if you want to reduce long-term repair risk.

What should I look for when buying a used 2015 BMW X5?

At 58.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle-history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially on higher-mileage or heavily optioned examples. Pay close attention to signs of prior bodywork, uneven panel gaps, tire wear, brake condition, and whether the electronics and driver-assistance features work as expected. Because this model can be expensive to maintain, condition and service records matter as much as mileage.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The X5 lineup includes five trims, and the base rear-wheel-drive sDrive35i is the only one without standard all-wheel drive. Higher trims add more luxury equipment, but the source also notes that many features require expensive option packages, so you should compare equipment carefully before paying up.
• Powertrain: The xDrive35i uses a 3.0-liter twin-turbo inline six with 300 hp and broad torque, while the xDrive50i uses a 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 with 445 hp. The six-cylinder is described as the preferred engine, especially if you want stronger efficiency than the V8.
• Safety package: Active Driving Assistant can bring forward collision alert with automatic braking for cars and pedestrians, plus lane-departure warning. Blind-spot monitoring and a backup camera are available, but they are not standard.
• Infotainment: The cabin centers on a 10.2-inch LCD screen with a searchable digital owner’s manual, and BMW’s iDrive system adds features such as live traffic, internet browsing, oil-level checks, and night vision. The source does not state wireless smartphone integration or OTA capability.
• Fuel efficiency: The xDrive35i is noted at 24 mpg, while the V8 version is noted at 17 mpg.

Which 2015 BMW X5 trim should I buy?

The 2015 BMW X5 is offered in 5 trim levels: sDrive35i, xDrive35i, xDrive35d, xDrive50i, X5 M.

Here's the short version:

• sDrive35i: This is the only rear-wheel-drive version, so it makes sense if you want the lowest entry point and do not need standard AWD. It is the trim to consider if you want the X5 experience without paying for the more powerful or more heavily equipped versions.
• xDrive35i: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds standard all-wheel drive and the 3.0-liter twin-turbo inline six with 300 hp. It is the sweet spot if you want the X5’s core strengths without stepping into the much pricier V8 models.
• xDrive35d: Choose this if you want the diesel option mentioned in the performance coverage and are prioritizing efficiency-oriented ownership. It is the right fit if you want a torque-rich alternative to the gas six.
• xDrive50i: This is the V8 choice, and it is for you if straight-line speed matters more than fuel economy. The source describes it as extremely quick and notes that it can become expensive once options are added.
• X5 M: This is the performance-focused top trim, and it is the one to consider if you want the most extreme version of the X5 lineup. It sits above the regular luxury trims and is the obvious pick if outright performance is your priority.

The safety content notes that the usual airbags and stability control are present, and that Active Driving Assistant is optional rather than standard.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2015 BMW X5?

• Deal availability: 34.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,018 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 9.70% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 58.5% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $12,379, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2015 BMW X5's resale value?

The current average of $12,401 sits slightly below last year's $13,733.

That decline suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy more confidently now but may also limit near-term upside if you plan to resell soon. For a future seller, the key takeaway is that value retention will depend heavily on condition, mileage, and service history rather than just the badge.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2015 BMW X5 safe?

The 2015 BMW X5 earns five-star ratings from federal crash tests and a top Good rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

The optional Active Driving Assistant brings forward collision alert with automatic braking for cars and pedestrians, plus lane-departure warning. Blind-spot monitoring and a backup camera are available, but they are not standard. The source also notes that the X5 includes the usual airbags and stability control, along with luxury-brand touches such as brakes that dry themselves in the rain and compensate for fade over repeated stops.

Should I buy a 2015 BMW X5 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2015 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2015 if:

• 34.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 58.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 9.70% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It blends SUV practicality with BMW’s sporty driving feel.

Consider the 2014 if:

• At $11,852, the 2014 costs less than the current year's $12,401 average.
• It helped define the luxury SUV segment and remains strongly associated with sporty performance.

The bottom line: If you want the stronger current-market balance of price, inventory, and satisfaction, the 2015 is the better starting point. If your priority is spending less up front, the 2014 is the more budget-friendly path.
